Will Smith may not have come home a winner at last night's Golden Globes, but he certainly didn't seem too worried about it while hamming it up with his Pursuit of Happyness costars in Rome over the weekend. Inside, though, Will is more full of Saddyness, and for good reason. Here's more:

"Smith, one of the world’s most bankable stars, appears mostly opposite black or Latino women,” noted U.K. writer Leslie O’Toole. “He once confided to me that he’d love to make a romantic comedy with Cameron Diaz but feared that his audience wouldn’t accept it.”
“It’s a shame, but it is what it is,” Thandie Newton, his co-star in “The Pursuit of Happyness” lamented. “I think if it was done in the right way, where race wouldn’t be an issue, it would be great. But you can’t bend people’s minds too quickly.”
It's an unfortunate truth that interracial couples are still very much shied away from in Hollywood. Quotes like these remind us that there's still a long way to go to achieve racial equality in America. Seriously, how could you deny the preciousness (not a word, we know, just go with it) of a beautiful pairing like Heidi and Seal? What do you guys think?

*I never noticed that before. Poor Will! I agree with Molly obviously there is still a long way to go. On an off note how cute were Heidi and Seal at the Golden Globes!!
1Wow. That sucks, cause I would totally see a movie with both Will and Cameron together. That might be the only way she'll get a big hit. She kinda lost her box office magic recently.
2Black, white couples in movies just ain't gonna happen......unless one of them is a convict, a racist looking for redemption, or one of them dies at the end. It would be nice to a movie with a happy ending for an interracial couple, but i don't see that happening too soon there is still too much racism in the world.
3I love Heidi and Seal together and would definitely watch a movie with a Will/Cameron pairing, they're both so cute and funny!
4It's mostly an issue of a minority male co-starring with a white woman. America can't seem to accept that. But there have been a several movies with a white male and a minority actress. Ashton Kutcher and Zoe Saldana in Guess Who, Jennifer Lopez and whoever that actor was in Monster in Law, Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton in one of the Mission Impossibles, Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in The BodyGuard...
So, it's not an issue of interracial couples, but the issue of "protecting" the white female image from a minority. Sorry, but that's just how I see it.
5Dulce you know I think white female/black male relationships are actually more 'accepted than the reverse. if you notice whitney is the only 'black' actress, the others are biracial, light-skinned or hispanic. I think this is just so out of touch with reality cos a lot of us there have been or in interracial relationships.
6I think it is terrible that there is still such a "taboo" in Hollywood. I would love to see Will and Cameron together....or Will and ANYONE no matter the race.
7You know, they both have tons o' money and more fame than they can handle. If Will Smith wants to make a romantic comedy with Cameron Diaz, they should do it. And they shouldn't make race the issue. Barriers don't break themselves down. America needs to grow up and deal with it.
8The only combination that seriously gets shotdown is that of a black male and white woman and other than that, it's really not stopped many other pairings of different races being cast as romantic couples if you think about it.
9ARE NOT WE TIRED OF THIS POMPOUS ASS WILL "MT HEAD IS SO BIG" SMITH?
10I don't know. I don't even think I know anybody that would have a problem with an interracial couple on screen - regardless of who is the minority. I think Hollywood is overly worried about negative reaction. It's why they always make and remake the same movies and why they won't take a chance on other things.
I'm not really sure its fair to blame all of America for Hollywood's aversion to risk.
11Skye - I hear what you're saying. But, I'm not sure I agree with you. After all, there are many movies made with zero concern for the bigoted white crowd - take Barbershop or Diary of a Mad Black Woman or whole hosts of other films. So, I'm not sure it's realistic to think interracial romantic comedies are not being made solely because Hollywood worries about racist white people.
After all, if someone is so racist they feel the white woman needs to be protected from the black man, are they really rushing out to see Will Smith movies anyhow?
12He made out with Farmer Ted in Six Degrees of Seperation..a white male..I don't see why they haven't put him in a romantic comedy with any actress they felt was right for the part no matter wht skin color. I think it is the studios afraid to greenlight such a project.. we need new blood in charge.
13Wait, didn't he do Hitch with Eva Mendes?? And Cameron Diaz is 1/2 Spanish..no? WTF..
14First, I agree with the poster who said they have plenty of money to make a movie themselves - if they want to make it and help move toward an acceptance of inter-racial romance in Hollywood, they should just make it and not worry about the $$. Secondly, I COMPLETELY disagree Dulce, and in fact, you have it backwards. When Denzel filmed the John Grishman movie w/Julia Roberts (Pelican Brief, I think), they did a test scene where they kissed. It was the black women who STRONGLY opposed to it and they cut it from the movie (if anyone remembers, the movie made it obvious they had feelings for each other, but they never acted on them.) In Jungle Fever, it was both sides that opposed the black male/white female relationship. I personally find it offensive when people automatically make the anglo out to be the bad guy - racism works both ways, people - remember that. That being said, I would LOVE to see a movie with these two!
15So would I think it would be interesting.
16I think someone needs to do an "interracial" ( hate that word) comedy, RIGHT NOW!!!!!!
I think America is ready.
17Didn't he have a relationship with that (white) woman in MIB? or maybe MIB2? I love this guy. Who would mind??? I can't imagine the type of person who would be against seeing Will Smith with anybody white. He is a lovely person.
PS I LOVE HEIDI & SEAL!
18If they (Will+Cameron) were in a movie together, I'd go see it!
19wow serioulsy thats a problem still wow
20I never even thought of this. I would LOVE to see them as a couple in a movie. It is sad that it is even a thought in people's minds.
21a movie with will and camie would be hysterical...i love both of them...
"stay far from timid, only make moves when your hearts in it and live the phrase sky's the limit."
22Oh, I'd love to see them in a romantic comedy together!!! I think they'd be great!!!
23I think most people think of Will Smith as white anyway so it shouldnt make a difference LOL jk There have been interracial couples before why is that a problem now and they are both A-list actors so I dont see that the problem is! I thought Hollywood only cared if the movie makes $$$ and I think Cameron and Will could make a hit movie
24Who does Will want permission from? The klan? That's who he needs it from. The feelings of black women do not make or break hollywood careers.
25~Let's Go~
I think one thing you have to remember is that even most of those movies where there is a white male with a minority female, it was a major part of the plot line that this was an interracial couple. That shows that it is still a big deal, even if they are willing to do this pairing.
What is interesting is that in a lot of British TV shows and movies they have interracial couples all the time, and it is never even brought up or mentioned. Unlike in American ones where if it happens its always a big deal.
26i never notice the race of couple unless it's a plot point. Why does it have to be a big deal?
I also think that nowadays, with this new generation, it isn't, or at least shouldn't be, a big deal. Maybe it's just the older people who have the problem. Those older people though, probably aren't the ones watching movies with WS or Cammie.
27I personally don't give a hoot about the race of the characters in a movie...I focus more on character development. I hope that Hollywood will open their eyes and see that most intelligent people won't care if Will Smith is paired with Cameron Diaz. I'd actually like to see movies with older female leading roles, too. Hollywood needs to take a chance on the audience!
28Anyone ever seen iRobot? Wasn't his love interest in that a white girl? o.O
29I think it would be great to have more interracial relationships on the big screen. It shouldn't be as big a deal seeing as though America is pretty much multiracial.
30Will could pick better than Cameron though.
I don't think anyone would care at all if there was a romantic comedy with an interracial couple. Who cares? I think we're a lot farther along than we're given credit for.
31its interesting how everything seems "fine" but in reality, people still aren't comfortable with it...so sad!
32Will is funny.
33Makes sense.
