This 11-Year-Old Boy From Ferguson, MO, Will Run the Country One Day

A young man named Marquis Govan is already planning his life in politics — and he's only 11 years old. Marquis, who lives in Ferguson, MO, appeared on CBS's Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley this week to talk about the unrest in his hometown since the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Mike Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in August. In the four-minute clip, Marquis is shown speaking at a St. Louis City Council meeting and addressing the problems in Ferguson both before and after Mike Brown's death, including unemployment, housing, and diversity. "I would just like to say that the people of Ferguson, I believe, don't need tear gas thrown at them. I believe they need jobs," adding, "You're paying attention to the wrong things. You're paying attention to the looting and things like that, when the real issues aren't being solved. There's a reason why those people are out there."

Let us repeat: Marquis is just 11 years old.

The interview goes on to reveal Marquis's rough upbringing as a child in foster care — he now lives with his great-grandmother Jennie Bracy — and sheds more light on his intelligence, poise, and incredible maturity. When asked if any of the children at his school aspire to become a cop, Marquis says no, and replies, "Look, let me tell you why: From the beginning, we've felt abused by these people. Why would you go up to serve among the abusers? It doesn't make any sense."
