Hi Ladies,
I changed the title from "All sewers, please advise!", because a few of you
not naming names, thought I was talking about street sewers!
Some of you know that I've been wanting to learn how to sew this year. I went to a local Sewing Center, only to be overwhelmed by my options for purchasing a sewing machine. The two brands that I seem to lean towards are Singer (7462) and Janome (DC3050). I'm not limited to these two, so if you have suggestions, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
I need your expertise in which machine I should look into.
Here are a few facts to consider:
I want a machine I can grow with. Something multi-useful.
I'm planning on learning how to create home decor pieces, and eventually get into clothing.
I've never touched a sewing machine in my life, but I'm planning on taking classes.
I'm hoping to buy one this, or next week so I can start my classes. Thanks

It probably depends on which model you buy
. Nevertheless, I was given a Singer
sewing machine as a first sewing machine when I was quite young which was very basic, and easy to use. But we did use both Janome and Singer at school. That's probably not very much help
though.
1Ha ha ha! Since this was in home renovations, I read your headline as sewers. As in the ones that run under the street.
2LOL JEN! I KNEW someone would read it that way
3So did I, actually!
4
How can I title this blog better?
5Maybe call out to "sewing experts" or something.
6Or "Calling all seamstresses"
7people here sew???? thats way cool
8Singer is classic. You are starting off with the fancy machines arent you
I cant even sew nicely on a basic sewing machine- I have issues with getting straight lines. But honestly once you get a hang of the basics it will be easy. My mom sews all the time. She has a basic sewing machine and a Surger (sp?). But Surgers are for when you really know what you are doing
9Have you looked into Bernina at all? I know they're expensive, but my husband's cousin has stuck with theirs, and they let her trade hers in when she wanted to upgrade.
10I wish I could saw
11SPM, hmm I haven't, but now I will. Thanks for the input girls!!
12I cant advise you on a specific brand, but when you start to sew, let me know! And I dont blame you for being overwhelmed. The options are endless, its crazy!
My grandfather is a tailor and Ive branched into sewing a bit. I sew stuff every now and again--Ive made two skirts in my younger days and am always up for a challenge!
13
Most of those Bernina Sewing machines have colored screens on them. Now
that's what I call Pimped out! Crispy, I'll let you know when I start. The place where I might be buying my machine, offers free classes if you buy it there.
14dCHIC YOU ARE A GOOD SEWER?
15oh wow that's serious equipment. I bought a sewing machine once and I had to return it cause I never learned how to put the thread through the thingies...

16Yayi, not yet. I'm on the search for a sewing machine, then I'll take classes. It's something I've always wanted to learn, and since I'm naturally creative, I figure I *might* be good at this. Aww Shi, would you ever consider learning? We could make Yayita a really cool
outfit!
17It just looks sooooooo difficult

18Shi, sometimes sewing stores have a deal where you can buy a machine, and then upgrade in a year for a better one if you get good. Then you can trade it in and put a little more down for the newer one. That's what I might do. Get a more basic one, then trade up next year.
19DesignR, what are you going to start out with? Any projects in mind? I do quilting, and I block together the top with the machine, and I've also been doing some aprons and stuff. I'm not professional or anything, but I do enjoy sewing.
20*and so far, you're the only other person I've seen on here who really has an interest in it.
21I'd like to start out by making accent pillows for chairs. And eventually get into embroidery for hand towels and such. Then curtains and fixing all my long pants so they fit me. Your apron project sounds like a lot of fun! I can see myself making some for my girlfriends who love to cook and host.
22I made our curtains when we bought this house. They're a pretty simple project, actually. Pillows are fairly simple, too. Slipcovers, however, are a bit more difficult.
23Yea, I figured I could start with the not-so-intimidating projects and work my way up. It must be fulfilling for you to know that you created pieces for your home. I'd love to eventually see some of your work too
24can you imagine how much money I would save if I could sew something simple like a skirt or hem a t-shirt?? that would be awesome!

25Seriously Shi. I can't tell you how much money I'd save by hemming some of my long pants or even creating some simple clothing pieces.
26I have a friend who took classes and they would have homework sewing fancy dresses for barbies! tell me about details wow... she even made her own wedding dress with a detachable train and lots of beading, beautiful!

27I can't say which brand would be best for you. But my Mother sewed professionally and now is a sewing machine dealer. She sells Singer and swears by them, but then she would wouldn't she? lol
I could find out what she loves about them for you?

LOL I want my pepino outfit hahahahaa wooot woot

30Yayi, don't worry and when I make it and send it to you, you better wear it and proudly!

32Hahahahah NO EXCUSES!!! I want the
stuffed animal now dammit!
33DR, When I talk to my sister, I'll ask her what's the best machine. She is a pretty good at sewing, and her friend is incredible so, she should know a good machine for you.
You'll be an excellent at sewing. I get too frustrated. I used to be good when, I was
young...then as I got older, I wasn't too good. Thank God, I didn't have to take that in college but, it probably would have helped me a lot. I can do some things still, though. Our machine
is a piece of cr*p, and I hate it so therefore the motivation isn't there.
34
ding, ding, ding. In this corner weighing in at a Hobag rate, is KARMA the old-perve
look-a-like. At the other corner, weighing in at a large pepino size is YAYITA, the man-eating stalker. Reaaaddyyy FIGHT!
35Oh thanks Beach Barbie! Let me know
36DR, I def. will.
It will probably be this weekend when I talk to her.
