Will Smith went from warming up a NYC crowd of extras to being honored at the 22nd Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. BFF Tom Cruise presented Will with the Modern Master Award. Will is up for an Oscar for his performance in The Pursuit of Happyness and was asked about the film's success and what it takes to be a good father. Here's more:
"People are enjoying the film and it's reached a level of critical acclaim; it can't get any better than this," he said. "This is such a glorious time, it feels almost like emotional, spiritual greed."
Asked what it takes to be a good father, Smith said patience, compassion and commitment. He's the father of three in real life, including 7-year-old Jaden, who co-stars in the movie.
"You've got to really want to be a good father," he told reporters on the red carpet outside the Arlington Theatre on Saturday night.

4my cousin's son was actually named for will smith. well, kinda. it was during the fresh prince era, and my cousin thought that the name sounded really cute for a boy so he named his son william but he's always called will. he said that his son would have been named david if it weren't for the fresh prince.

11I HOPE HOPE HOPE Will wins the Oscar, but it looks like it's going to go to Forest Whitaker (GRR!), but I'm over it. I think I'm more upset about it than Will probably is. But he's doing good anyway!
12I want him to get the Oscar too, but they always go for those with established careers, I think Forest will take it as well... last year was shocking to me when Reese won!

"they always go for those with established careers". nomerz, not quite. for best actor maybe, but every year since 1997 the best actress has gone to someone under the age of 39. also, adrien brody (at 29) beat both jack nicholson and daniel day-lewis in 03, while jamie foxx and russell crowe won for the roles that made them household names. oscar is very good to those young stars who wow them.
