Smokin' Aces may not be heating things up at the box office, but it has still been a smart move on Ben Affleck's part - it actually helped him quit smoking. That will definitely give him more energy to put into Jen, Violet, and the film he's written and directed, Gone, Baby, Gone. Ben recently stopped for a Q&A about family life, his GG Nom, and the upside of nepotism. Here's highlights:

I was very happy. My wife was up early with our child and [woke me up] to tell me I'd been nominated – and to get me to change the baby. - You play a chain-smoking bail bondsman in Smokin' Aces. You're a smoker, right?
The whole week that I shot, I smoked, like, five packs a day. By the time the movie was over, I was so sick of smoking, I just didn't want to do it anymore, and I quit. I have this celluloid record of the last time I smoked. - How was directing your brother Casey, 31, in Gone, Baby, Gone?
A pleasure. It was like directing anybody else, except I could fantasize that if it came down to it I could throttle him.

Yay Ben! Glad he quit smoking. I'm looking forward to seeing his directorial debut. It's always interesting to see someone branch out and try new things.

2He did not write Gone baby, Gone. He adapted it into a screenplay. The book is by one of my favorite authors and I hope he did not ruin it being I feel he is lacking in the talent department.
3his directorial debut has morgan freeman and ed harris, two of the best! those two usually don't do crappy movies, so i'm intrigued to how this will turn out. it'd be nice if ben could become one of the fine actor-directors like warren beatty or george clooney...but i won't get ahead of myself. time will tell.

7I'm so glad he stopped smoking, I think it's a nasty habit, and it makes him that much hotter that he's no longer smoking. IMHO

I wish him all the best...he seems happy and grounded nowadays. It's great that he quit smoking.

10Yuck, five packs a day while filming! Good job he quit, it sounds like he packed a few years of smoking into a few weeks. I'm sure his wife is happy he's done with the nasty habit.
11ha! there must be something to that..i had a feiend whose dad caught him smoking when he was really young..and as punishment he made him smoke a pack of cigarettes in one sitting..like he couldn't do anything til he finished. he said it was so gross that to this day he can't even look at a cigarette without wanting to throw up
12I'm really curious to see what he did with Gone Baby Gone. Not sure if I should re-read them (I think the third one was when they started getting good, the first one was almost painful but they were great by the end.).

15He just seems like a really great guy. Good for him for quitting smoking! I think Jen Garner is a total healthnut (and especially now with Violet) and I am sure she breathed a sigh of relief over this

23Ben is really the nicest guy! He always listens to his woman. With JLo he dressed the way she liked. With Garner he can relax in the dressing up department, she works with him on his health. Because of her, he has cleaned up, and become skinny & healthy and non-smoking. I respect that, it must have been hard work for both. And their daughter benefits from it as well. Well done B&J!
