At first glance it might seem like Anne has quite a charmed life. Perhaps that's because of her roles in movies like Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted, or the lucky fact that she has managed to move from starring in kids movies to more adult roles. Though the transition may have looked smooth, Anne says it wasn't a walk in the park. These days she is happy, but there were dark moments in her teen years where things looked less sunny. Here's more:

"I said to Mom the other day, 'Do you remember that girl? She has now gone, gone to sleep. She has said her piece and she is gone,' " Hathaway, 24, tells Britain's Tatler magazine. "But then I thought, 'I so remember her, only she is no longer part of me.' "
She continues, "I am sorry she was hurting for so long. It's all so negatively narcissistic to be so consumed with self."
This depression trend seems like the new thing to admit. Mandy Moore and Zach Braff also recently told us about their struggles with depression. Anne is clearly at a happier point in her life and how could she not be with her red-hot career. For more pics of Anne looking amazing just read more

she looks stunning here. depression is such a b*tch; i've battled it for years and so has my dad and younger sister. more power to anne if she's managed to overcome it!
1well, celebrities are only human too, I think it's a positive step that depression isn't as taboo a subject as it once was.
2I'm glad Anne has come forward, I'm sure it helps teens to have their role models talk about getting through depression.
yes, kudos to Anne for being in a better place. However, if you read the full article she credits getting "over" her depression (which sounds more like being a moody and confused teenager as many people are during such an awkward time) not through seeking help but that she "rejected medication and instead worked through her troubles".
To suggest that depressed people are "narcissistically self obsessed" is mean and sounds a lot like Tom Cruise's insensitive comments that depressed people just need to take vitamins and exercise to cure depression. These are great suggestions when you are feeling down or being in a bad mood. However, depression is a real illness that vitamins and exercise won't cure. It also suggests that people who claim to be depressed are just too lazy to work through it. It is often hard for depressives to get help; that is one of the symptoms!
Depression is not cured through hard work and these sort of comments support the assumption that mental illness isn't a "real" illness that may need to be managed for the rest of one's life; like it is just a phase you grown out of. It isn't narcissistic to say "I need help" or to recognize that medication may be needed for an individual to be able to function normally. Afterall, we wouldn't say the same sort of thing to someone who needed medication to control high blood pressure.
3I know iVe been through depression before
4good grief I don't find that girl attractive at all...
5Oh wwaaaaahhhh.. Waaaahahhhh give me a break. I'm so gorgeous it hurts, I was in one of the best movies of the year, I've got money out the ass and I'm gonna cry about how depressed I am. Oh brother.
6thebeachedwhale: I think she just meant that medication wasn't right for HER, she doesn't say anything derogitory about other people needing them. I have also suffered from depression in the past and I did try many anti-depressants. None of them worked for me and I was only able to feel better through councelling and therapy. It WAS hard work and took many years. Anti-depressants have a lot of side effects, some immidiate and some long term (bone density-loss, increased risk of certain cancers, increased risk of suicide for teens). I live in Canada and they are rarely prescribed to those under 18 because of the risks. People with depression need to do what is right for their situation so just because she didn't chose medication I wouln't say she was not depressed.
7Thank God I don't suffer from depression. I don't let things depress me that I can't do anything about.
8ok...i don't know a single girl who wasn't anorexic and depressed at some point in their teenage years...its called growing up..puberty is the biggest b*tch out there... very few handle it well...
9Yes, there is depression, and then there is *clinical* depression. They are entirely different things. Both are real and valid, but what works for one *doesn't* necessarily work for the other. Sounds like Anne wasn't clinically depressed, but still, she admitted that she didn't have a perfect life, and had to work to overcome her darker feelings. I really respect her for that, and think she's a far better role model for my daughter than some of the other "starlets" out there.
10The second picture is very pretty.
11she is odd looking which makes her pretty...
"stay far from timid, only make moves when your hearts in it and live the phrase sky's the limit."
12is. . .is that a paper bag?
13The high fashion poses aren't working for her. But I'm glad to hear she's overcome her depression. It can be very isolating.
14I like her in these pictures!
15i was thinking the same thing nettefairy. Paper bag as a dress? interesting. I love her i think she's very real. We should pay more attention to her and other fabulous girls instead of Paris and Britney. (i know, P&B are more interesting.)
16she looks beautiful in these pictures
17I Love this Girl, My daughter and I love Princess Diaries and Ella enchanted, She is a Beautiful Girl and She seems to know
18what path she is taking now. I'm so happy to never see Her hanging out with Paris,Lindsey and Britney, I think Anne
is to smart for that. I loved her in the Devil wears Prada, She is just a really Good actress and seems genuinely nice.
All the best to her I think she has a nice long career ahead of her and I'm sure a Good Life.
she is looking WOW! is it me or has she lost alot of weight? not tt shes too skinny or anything, i think she looks fab here!
19I think there is some confusion about depression, you don't "let" or "not let" it happen to you - sometimes it is from an external situation but many times it is a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is nothing that you can control. I think thebeachedwhale is right, and RaeMarie81 is funny, unless 81 means the year you were born in which case it's not funny cuz you're younger than me and I'm mad cuz I'm so old. Ha, just kidding!
I don't get the bag as a dress.
20Yeah I'm depressed, I'm gonna go shopping...
21I mean there's many kinds of depressions, but doesn't she sound a lil off here?
mafalda: are you confusing her with Lindsay Lohan?
22She said that she WAS going through a depression and WAS hurting. She isn't saying she's STILL depressed.
-Bug
Oh no I actually said that for myself *bugness*, oh no, not at all I think Lindsay is a very special case, besides she is not depressed she is a drunk
. I'm only saying her comment sounded off WHEN ever it is she happened to say it. I mean
"remember that lil girl? she has now gone gone to sleep.."
23that..to me..sounds very disturbing and creepy and I don't care if it was yesterday, years ago or whenever, it still sounds disturbing...
why is it most celebrities have sob stories to tell us???
24she looks gorgeous in these pictures, props for the paper bag dress
25Shes a great role model for younger girls!
26With all the money she has i'd go cure my depression with a long stay in a luxury spa in hawaii!
27Wow! She look fabulous! Absolutely stunning!
