Hilary has definitely come a long way since starring in The Next Karate Kid and Beverly Hills 90210. At the age of 32, she's already won two Oscars and is considered one of Hollywood's top actresses. Things aren't always perfect for the actress. Besides recently going through a divorce she also says she felt like an outsider as a child. In the March issue of Marie Claire magazine Hilary talks all about life, love and becoming an award-winning actress. Here's more:
- On her motivation to become an actor
"As a kid I felt like such an outsider. I didn't belong. I fought for my place in the world. And part of what brought me to being an actor is that I would watch movies and there would be characters I could relate to. I felt my place within that, within them." - On her divorce [to actor Chad Lowe]
"In life we have expectations of how things should turn out... Ending my marriage isn't something I take lightly. But it was the right thing to do." - On her intense personality
"People do call call me intense. I can see why. I can. But, I don't like the word 'intense'—I prefer 'focused," she says. "I am a lay-it-on-the-table kind of girl. No nonsense. I'd rather have honest relationships, because life is too short to beat around the bush. Honesty shows that you really care about someone. I live by that."
Next up Hilary will once again show us just how intense focused she can be in The Reaping where she plays a Christian missionary who loses her faith. Sounds like someone's going for another Oscar!

I like her. LOVED Million $$ Baby.
I saw her in a restaurant one day, and she's prettier in person.
1She looks gorgeous!

I love her!
7She looks cute here. I love my 90210.

I'm calling this one a tranny.

9I GUESS great great actresses are 'boring' in the meaning of a TABLOID sense. just look: meryl streep, nicole kidman. they are absolutely great in their roles! and I think it comes from their lives which are very proper and 'intense' and 'normal'. those women are complete personalities. they do not need to make a fuss around them. but they do need to be outstanding in their work.
10I don't remember Swank in 90210
11She was a single mom who ended up dating Steve, JK Boogie. I also think she worked at the Peach Pit for a while! Man do I miss that show, haha
12I love that dress she's wearing......
13I just can't bring myself to like her. I'm sure she is a lovely person & all but I just can't do it

You can be a great actor, and still be interesting, and not just in a tabloid sense. I find Charlize Theron to be a very interesting woman ( even though I don't like her) and she is a great actor.
This girl may be talented but she's boring.

16I actually don't think she's that great of an actress. A truly great actress (or actor) raises the level of the project just by being in it. But with Hilary, she hits on some great roles that she just nails, but the vast majority of the time, she's a mediocre player in bad movies.
And she's not the only person I think falls into the category. I think most actresses, like Charlize Theron and Halle Berry and others are the same way. But someone incredible, like Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Meryl Streep or Judi Dench is always amazing.
17Sorry kscincotta,
but I am calling a "swing and a miss" on your girl Kidman in Practical Magic and Bewitched.
Maybe it is because I cannot STAND Kidman, but she is most definitely not always amazing...

Fair enough. I hesitated to put Nicole Kidman on the list for exactly those movies that you named. But the rest of my comment still stands - there are great actresses, and there are good actresses who become great in the right roles, and Hilary Swank is latter.
19That's a gorgeous cover. Makes me feel like Spring is right around the corner. Meanwhile I'm freezing my ass off!

I have to argue with the actress theory too. I love Meryl Streep but let's not forget that little movie she devil and the other movie with Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis. I also saw Rene in a mediocre movie but forgot the name of it. Anyways, it was really cheesy.

In my opinion, part of being a successful actor or actress is to notice your strengths and weaknesses and pick out roles accordingly.
