Eddie Murphy follows up his award-winning performance in Dreamgirls with the comedy Norbit, which premiered last night in Westwood. In the film, Eddie plays both a grossly obese woman and the mild-mannered man she is engaged to. The film is getting pretty bad reviews so far and some are even saying that it might hurt Eddie's chances at the Oscars! Eddie is known best for his comedic performances so we think he is just staying true to his form. 3I was thinking tonight he goes from Dreamgirls to this movie...my friends went to see this tonight, and I opted to stay in. Just one of those movies you KNOW is going to suck...

5Isn't the fat sassy mean black woman genre a little played out (and a lot offensive)? There is a reason Eddie Murphy is dressing in drag to play this character - no self-respecting, full-figured actress (think Queen Latifah, Monique, Jennifer Hudson) would agree to playing such a defeating stereotype. Also - the character Norbert reminds me a lot of Murphy's character in Bowfinger.
If you couldn't tell, I will be passing on this film.

6After looking at the commercial it looks like it's going to be like his other two movies-The Klumps and The Nutty Professor.
7I sort of hope it does hurt his chances, since I don't think he deserves the Oscar. Both Djimon Honsou (in Blood Diamond) and Jackie Earle Harley (in Little Children) were better than Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls.
But, I doubt that it will. The Oscars LOVE people who sing.

I do think that the Oscars should be based on which performance out of the nominated ones was the best, and that doing an awful movie after shouldn't have bearing on whether or not he gets an oscar.

I didn't like his comments about Mel B. - even if he is not a father, they were together and he should have been more tactful. So I don't really keep my fingers crossed for him at the Oscars - I prefered Mark Whalberg's performance in The Departed.

21Sherale - He was dating Mel B & she got pregnant. He broke up with her & in an interview said that the reporter was being presumptuous by assuming that the baby is his & they won't know who's it is until the baby is born & a DNA test is done. Then he turns up with Tracey Edmonds saying that he's never been happier and she's made everything right in his world. He's such an *sshole.

24I saw Dreamgirls the other day. Eddie's performance is not Oscar worthy!!!! He was okay in it, nothing special! I am shocked that he is up for the Best Supporting Actor award.
25as i've seen all the supporting actor nominees at this point, i'd much rather have djimon hounsou win. if not djimon, then jackie earle haley, and if not jackie earle, then alan arkin, and if not alan, *then* eddie. sorry, he didn't wow me at all. now j.hud...that's another story! she deserves to win.
