The video for Avril Lavigne's new single, Girlfriend, is, well, exactly what you might think would come of the entire chain of Hot Topic stores exploding onto MTV. The pre-teen-y nature of the video seems a little, uh, insincere, coming from Avril who has recently talked openly about growing up and embracing glam more than punk. That being said...the song is already stuck in my head.

i love the new song hehe it makes me feel like dancing
1I LOVE Avril! You don't have to shop at Hot Topic to like her and her music - it's so catchy and girly I just love it =)
I remember growing up with my little sister and how we would play her first CD and be able to sing along to every single word! Even my brother and his friends knew them to! Lol
2I really like this song, I already put in my ipod!
3*too
4Maybe a good song for a 15-year-old.
5Sorry clicked enter too soon. It seems even more young than her other songs. It doesn't seem to me that a married woman at her age would sing it.
6Is she kidding? Is this a joke?
7Did a 12 year old girl write this song?
Avril has always been the biggest, poser.
This song is so lame. I agree with the couple of comments above me. IS she kidding??? It is totally teeny-bopper (actually, pre-teen) and stupid. I couldn't even listen to the entire song it was so bad!!!!! I seriously thought she was going to grow up and actually do some real music for once.
8uh.. does anyone realize how screwed up this video is? she's beating on some girl (who looks way cooler than she does) and hitting her in the head with golf balls to get some guy, who is laughing. lame!
9I have to agree, this song is terrible and I could not even listen to it all the way through... She still reminds me of a 12 year old girl trying to rebel ... for some reason she reminds me of a vampire,, i think it is her teeth lol...
10Yeah but everyone that liked her music before were pre-teens... I don't think she has enough raw talent to completely ditch her target audience and do real music. She's prolly smart for sticking to this sound. And just because some people get married young doesn't mean they will magically grow up! =)
11This song is so lame it's embarassing. Sorry. I'm sure the Tweens' will love this song though.
12If she says she's more mature now then why doesn't it show in her music? She's such a poser to me. In a weird way,she kindda reminds me of Paris in that video. The long blonde hair, the slutty attitude..I don't know...
13all her videos look exactly the same. I haven't liked this girl since she spit on the photog. Yuck! I hate seeing stuff about her
14Yeah I don't know...If I was the girlfriend in this video I would have beat Avril's "punk" *ass lol. I guess this song will have to grow on me b/c right now it's def not a fave of mine.
15I'm really indifferent about this song...it's catchy, but come on avril, it's so juvenile!
16Agrh, her fake punk attitude is so lame! She should stick to bubblegum pop, she just belongs there.
17This is sh*t...
18ok, it is freaking catchy as hell, but i doubt i'll be buying/downloading it onto my ipod any time soon.
19Stupid but not so bad... i miss old Avril...
20I hope they don't play this on the radio. I felt corny as ever listening to it.
21I don't thin it's a really good song or anything, but it definitely is catchy. The lyrics are pretty lame, but the more I listen, the more it grows on me. Although I was the high schooler that bought her first cd and had it has my guilty pleasure... I wouldn't give her any awards, and she as a person bugs me, but the song is so fun to bop your head to.
I just hope little girls aren't taing lessons ftom her on how to get boys. Also the gothy style is uggs. Ha.
22The other thing... why is she dancing? isn't she anti- that?
23i do agree her older songs were better, but that doesnt mean she has to stick to one type of music, she has to please different ages and i think its gr8
24the song is very catchy--in that annoying kind of way.
25That's ridiculous she's a 22 year old married woman now!No evolution at all... she looks like a stupid teen in it.
26And i also wanted to add
How is that cool to steal somebody's boyfriend, and how is that cool to bully someone????
Ps she has back up dancers now?
27kelly its not cool to steal anybody's boyfriend..
28its a fun song anyone can think of it in a fun way.
Good Lord, just when I thought she couldn't do anything more lame than spitting on a photog, out comes this tripe. It's musical regression at its worst. All it has going for it is a nominally catchy beat, the lyrics are trite and prepubscent, and the video is utterly ridiculous.
29I think it's great. I think it reflects how she feels in life. Earlier in life, she was angry punk chick, now she's a happily married pop-punker. Reminds me of Blink 182's evolution.
30i agree with everyone. avril seemed to be growing up, but this song is so lame and young. her last cd was more mature than this... i don't like it. i used to like her a lot, but now i think she's just a poser.
31That is such a HORRIBLE song! She pretends that she is a rebel, but she bows down to her own cliche. It is like "Kidz Pop" song. Just awful.
32wow, i don't think even the Disney Channel could make this more cheesy. They just have to press play for one of their commercials about, umm, whatever those pre-teen shows are called.
as for the video, there are so many things that are wrong with it but i think the fundamental problem i have is that the poor girlfriend doesn't even seem to be a bad person! Avril is just being spiteful just to be spiteful. I think it would be understandable if the girl was a Paris Hilton wannabe or something, but she's just a nerdy girl with a cute boyfriend. As Michelle Tanner would say "How Rude!"
33I refuse to listen to it because I never liked her snotty little attitude she always has. She needs a nice kick in the butt from me.
34And I thought this chick couldn't get anymore annoying...
35She can give K-Fed a run for his money as biggest poser ever.
36I think it's great. I think it reflects how she feels in life. Earlier in life, she was angry punk chick, now she's a happily married pop-punker. Reminds me of Blink 182's evolution.
She is not, nor was ever, punk in any way, shape, or form. And all this shows is that she's still a brat.
37Of course she was punk! Punk is a very large genre these days. You may not like her, or her music, but that doesn't mean that she was never punk at all.
38love her:P
39She was never punk, hon. Any true music fan will tell you that.
40Her genre was pop princess punk wannabe. Punk was and is a very specific genre to which she does not belong.
41So you would group her where? Pop?
42Wikipedia: sub-genres/fusion genres for punk rock:
Subgenres
Anarcho-punk - Art punk - Garage punk - Glam punk - Hardcore - Horror punk - Oi! - Riot Grrrl - Skate punk - Christian punk - Nazi punk
Fusion genres
Anti-folk - Celtic punk - Chicano punk - Cowpunk - Deathcountry - Deathrock - Folk punk - Pop punk - Psychobilly - Punkabilly - Punk blues - Ska punk - 2 Tone
Let's see... POP PUNK is a fusion genre that still falls underneath the punk genre umbrella.
43Avril Lavigne a PUNK????????LOOOOOOOOL!!!!
44Very funny indeed.
She's pop. She's not punk. I grew up in the punk culture. I write about the punk culture in magazines. A "subgenre" is a joke. Punk is and always has been about saying something important, not about being someone's beleagured girlfriend.
Punk rock as a genre unto itself exploded in late '70s England when angry working class kids, frustrated with the rigid norms and class polarization that ruled their country, formed fast, loud, primitive rock bands with names like The Buzzcocks, The Damned, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols, through which they expressed their rage and alienation. Similarly minded bands emerged all over the U.S. -- The Ramones in New York, The Dead Kennedys in San Francisco, and X and Black Flag in Los Angeles. These bands had different aesthetics, different agendas, and different sounds, but they were all united by their rejection of institutional authority, their penchant for self-destruction, and their music's raw, wounded emotional power.
Where's little April's raw emotional power? Where's her penchant for self destruction? Non existent.
45I like Avril and loved her last album, but I wasn't expecting her single to be like this. I'm not too keen. I hope the rest of the songs on the album are better.
46Avril grew up in this isolated little town in Canada, listening to John Denver and the Carpenters as a child. I can imagine how excited she felt when she discovered punk music, and I think that's why she tries so hard to embrace it ( poorly, but she tries). Punk music is the opposite of her life experience, and she probably found it intriguing. I mean, I discovered classical music as a teen...when all of my friends where listening to reggae and hip hop and merengue....and it was like a whole new world for me. I think we should cut her some slack. She may not be punk, but she certainly is influenced by it, and that's not such a bad thing, is it?
That said, this video is lame. Get your own boyfriend, goth chick. The song is so juvenile, my twelve year old didn't even like it. But then, my daughter likes Panic at the Disco and Arctic Monkeys...Avril is not really her style. I think Avril is the prettiest little thing, but her attitude stinks.
47First off I absolutely HATE when someone calls another person "hon" That drives me crazy!! Doesn't everyone know that you only use "hon" when you're talking down to someone or rubbing something in their face?? This is the second time I've read a pop member using that word on here! I work as a server and when another of the girls calls me "hon" it makes me want to smash a plate of food in their face!! (Of course I don't lol). So I'm just curious... Am I the only one that feels that way???
And second I think there's a HUGE generational difference between what a teen nowadays considers "punk" verses someone like Padraigin who grew up in it... For teens now, you pretty much call any girl "punk" who paints one hand with black nail polish and the other with hot pink lol
48I would think that she would sing about things that apply to her new life as an adult & a married woman, y'know? Not stealing a boyfriend! lol I'm blushing for her- how embarrassing! But my 9 year old niece will probably love it!
49the girlfriend is ten times cooler than she is...
shooting golf balls at peoples heads? what moron finds that funny?
