Mel Gibson is acting fast. After the mess from this weekend and the backlash and boycotting that has begun, Mel has checked himself into a recovery program otherwise known as a fancy vacation. Star broke the exclusive. Here's more:
Mel Gibson has checked himself into a recovery program for alcohol, the troubled actor's rep Alan Neirob, exclusively tells Star. "He is in a program of recovery at this time," Neirob says.
Plus, Chris Prentiss, a neighbor of Gibson's and the co-founder of celebrity treatment centre Passages in Malibu, Calif., tells Star: "I understand he has gone into recovery program. The center that I've heard he's checked himself into follows the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. And I don't believe that will help him."
Prentiss — who refused to name the rehab center he's heard Gibson is in — adds: "I think he needs individual intense therapy by a team of people who know what they are looking for in causes in alcoholism.

In an obnoxious way....lol....that's not the real him either....I don't agree with Mel's behavior, but I do think it's great he didn't make excuses and got himself help...Why's this guy doggin' him? This girl from Tahlequah OK had several DUI's...then she slammed into another girl and KILLED her....yet she hasn't gotten nearly the bad press Mel's getting....seems quite ironic to me...at least he's admitting his problem..ya know?

15kimmi that was so well stated. im totally different when im drinking...i am also suprised completely he hid his drinking problem for so long. he knows he stepped over a line and he is trying to fix it, but i love mel and i will continue to support his acting endeavors. as i said in the other mel post that he was taught this prejudice from his very obviously prejudiced father... he grew up his entire early life believing what he was told and so he is trying to overcome things of this nature. i will not throw stones at the man who didnt get to form his own opinions and was given those by his father who he had always looked up to. his situation is a sad one and i will feel bad for him until he can overcome the hate and prejudiced that he had been taught by many people his entire life! i am not perfect and is there anyone that you stone throwers hate? did you make any racial comments after 9/11...i know alot of people that started hating an entire race and religion after that...come on now and we werent taught this hatred we formed that opinion on our own (those who formed one). im not trying to start any wars i just feel such sadness for him!

I do agree Kimmi that you can sometimes act differently when drunk, but to make statements like that??? Some could argue that you are acting on your subconscious emotions when you have too much to drink...drinking just makes you uninhibited...

21i know what you mean, i just really feel for mel bc his father had all these opinions on jewish people. he blamed them feverously for the death of jesus and passed down his feelings to mel. he raised him and taught him the holocaust never happened and tried to justify what jewish people went through feeling as though they should all suffer. i wish ppl would remember that mel was fed this information and misinformed as his father was misinformed their entire lives...its a shame but it is all ignorance and them not knowing anybetter. im not trying to say what he did was right, i am far from agreeing with him about anything on religion. i just can not stress my deep sadness for what he was taught his entire life. of course children look up to their parents and mel def. looked up to his father so he did not ? his father when he was younger. he def. has his own opinions now and i dont think he agrees with his father completely but it would be hard for him to believe everything his father taught him was wrong. i think he is trying to deal with what he was taught his entire life and what he feels is true and im sure he is a very confused man!

34He didn't hide his drinking problem for so long. He was a well known boozer, womanizer and all around bad boy for a long time. He cleaned up his act about a decade ago and has kept it on the line for a while. This is a relapse rather than a first look at a problem.
I'm really disappointed as he was one of the few actors in Hollywood who seemed to have real convictions and didn't seem willing to sacrifice his morals for money or fame. For me, he has fallen so far.
However, if saying that Jews are responsible for all the world's wars was the extent of his anti-semitic tirade (which seems to be the case based on the original police report), then he can clearly be educated. I'm not sure that can be classified as vicious hatred. How many people claim everyday that America or Bush are responsible for all the world's wars?
IF he's willing to change his views, I don't see why he shouldn't be given another chance. Lots of people see the error of their ways. I guess I'll wait and see what happens when he gets out of rehab. So far, he seems to be heading in the general direction of the right ballpark.

39Denying the holocaust ever happened is disgusting. it's well known that Mel's father is anti semetic, I had hoped that Mel was different but obviously not. My grandfather liberated one of the concentation camps and he was never the same again. The things he saw haunted him for the rest of his life. 44Well, as I recall, many of us wished Michelle Rodriguez would at least *pretend* to feel bad for the horrible things she did, but now that Mel Gibson is admitting he was wrong, apologizing, going to rehab, and (I assume) planning to continue the pro-Jewish projects he started *before* all of this (meaning he's not just doing them to make up for this) he's getting completely demonized. Make no mistake, there is absolutely no excuse for his behavior and I, for one, am grateful he didn't insult our intelligence by trying to make excuses. Short of having never said the awful things he did, which simply cannot be taken back now no matter how much we all wish they could, what more can you ask of him? Incidentally, many of the people who are blasting Mel for the hateful things he's said have made comments on this very site which were extremely offensive to me, and unfortunately I know I've done the same, so clearly none of us are immune to our own types of hatred no matter how wrong those feelings might be. Maybe we should all just tone down the name-calling and accusations a bit.
