blaming Annie isn't going to make things better Mylie- you are already looking skankier than Britney ever did. At least Brit looked sexy and not malnourished and underage.( i know Miley is underage but so was Brit.)
1That pic is ridiculous! She is 15! And people wonder why Jamie-Lynn got pregnant at 16, look what people are allowing their children to do at such young ages just because they are celebs.
Did her parents not see anything wrong with this? they were there. I am so disgusted.
Sorry for the rant
2Briandiesel- Uh, so is your point that Britney didn't LOOK underage? And why is it better if Britney looked sexy? So, if Miley also looked sexy, in your opinion, then a nearly-nude underage photo would have been much better? Gross....
Yeah, 15 year olds don't make the best decisions. That is why she has parents, handlers, and wtf Vanity Fair and Annie, they really screwed this one up. My VF subscription is thisclose to being cancelled.
3i dont get the hoopla and fuss over this so called "scandal"..this girl is not a saint as some may think..for a girl who leaks them "myspace pics" this "artsy" shoot.is not even suprising..so
4What a hypocrite!
I went over to the VFair site, and both her parents were there. She even had her father pose with her for a pic that looks like she's cuddling with a much older boyfriend!
It's always those types from families with a "strong" tie to their faith, just look at Chestica Simpleton and her ex-Reverend father, who's been pimping his daughters...
5Not only is the Miley picture inappropriate, she looks sickly and kind of creepy in it as well. It's really odd.
6umm... she looks like she is 25. stop trying to grow up so fast. i knew it was bound to happen to her. look at jamie lynn. ugh. her parents are crazy. so disappointing!!!!!!!
7She's wearing (W hore) red lipstick, has sex hair (hair tumbled), covering, what appears to be a naked body in a bed sheet, with a guilty look on her face. She's 15 and acting like a tramp. The photos she made with her own father bothered me more. They were laying on the ground, intertwined with each other, touching each other while she's laying there with her stomach exposed. I've never seen photos of a father and his teen daughter like that before. It was like they were a "couple" in love. It gave me the creeps to look at it.
8Yeah I'm sorry she is trying to blame the photog for her mess! What about all those skanky shots she took with her friends?
9That's a beautiful photo, very artistic. Either Miley wants more publicity out of the photo, or Disney is too cautious.
108I've never seen photos of a father and his teen daughter like that before. It was like they were a "couple" in love. It gave me the creeps to look at it.
JAG i agree
11Urgh the media ruin these girls.
Who cares if her parents were present, does that make posing like that okay? Does posing for Annie make it okay? No. There is no excuse for a young girl who should be in SCHOOL posing like that.
And I don't care if it's meant to be 'artistic'. If Annie really wanted to shoot her, she'd have done it tastefully, to suit Miley.
All this "I am so sorry" crap they say in their 'statements' is a load of bull. Obviously if she thinks about this now and ONLY feels it was inappropriate after her fans who are the reason she is 'famous', then she is not mature enough for the business, and definitely not mature enough to make a well rounded opinion about this shoot. If she *truly* believed that it was artistic and she was happy to do it, she'd stick to her principles and not apologise for it, no? So obviously a part of her knew the backlash would come, and that it was inappropriate for a girl her age.
When I was 15, I wasn't taking photos like she has with her friends, and if I was 'famous' in the strange way she is, I wouldn't have been posting topless like that no matter who the photographer was... and I'm a 'good girl' who isn't even religious. This whole facade she tries so desperately to keep is pathetic. She's lying to herself and to her fans.
12snowbunny, my point was none of the options you listed-
my point is that Miley has said she will never be like Britney nor will she use sex to sell products because of her strong morals. If her parents were there and she was comfortable with it, then all they can do is take the heat for the pics. Britney was underage and looked older so it was less disturbing IMO, of course she is my age so it wasn't as gross for me. Miley was born when I was 11, so it freaks me out a little that she looks like that. Its gross, I agree.
And before you try to paint me as some gross guy, I'm gay, so none of these underage girl skin shots are gonna do anything for me anyway.
13I know it necessarily isn't Vanity Fair's fault but what magazine, especially a magazine of Vanity Fair's caliber, puts a half-naked 15-year-old on their cover? I guess these days, it really does boil down to $$$$.
14She lets pic flashing her bra be put on the internet, but objects to this one???? Seem like someone is trying to do retroactive damage control.
Guess her parents really need the $$$$$$$$!
15Seriously, she is going to be the next Britney or JamieLynn, either a drug addict that has caused mental illness or a knocked up teenager! Her dad is pimping her out worse than Joe Simpson!!
i guess in the grand scheme of things, Miley's pics weren't all that bad - the issue that i have with the whole thing is that she's 15 YEARS OLD!!! that's just wrong to have pictures like that taken of someone so young even if they are tasteful. granted though, in this day - that's really tame compared to what all the other young starlets have done during their time.
i read the thing about kenny chesney - that's really impressive about how he was able to go on stage and perform even though he really damaged his foot. OUCH!
i don't know how ashley judd does it. i wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that my hubby is a race car driver. at least he only broke his ankle - that's not the worst that could have happened.
as for amy ...i hope that she gets help. she was doing so well for a while there - and now it's like she's regressing a bit.
16i agree liss, .and brian brian, btw brian likes men not women
17I was reading the article and she also says that SATC is her favorite show. I don't have kids, but if I did, I would never let them watch that show. Not until they are like 18! (Although I do love that show. haha but I'm old!)
18why did i get listed 3 times pink? haha
19I think its ridonkulous that there is an uproar over these pics! I'm sorry but there are NO tween girls reading Vanity Fair. So I don't think she'd have any impact whatsoever on young girls. Furthermore, I don't know why parents expect Hollywood to be the perfect role models for their children! I think this an excellent lesson in yes you can like her singing, acting etc and thats it.
My gosh - my role model as a kid was Madonna.... First tape I ever owned was Like A Virgin. And shockingly I turned out just fine.
By the way - I think that she's back pedalling b/c Disney is making her.
20I really don't know what to think of this anymore. If Miley and her parents want to support her clean appearance, they should of not scheduled a VF photo shoot. And why would VF want a 15 year old on their cover...does this seem wrong to anyone else? Maybe a cover on Tiger Beat or some other teen magazine...but not on VF. And Miley does look like sick/death in that picture. Even for an "artistic" value...that picture should of never been taken of her.
21Miley, her parents, Annie Leibovitz, Vanity Fair... What the heck were they all thinking???
22I dont know, I really like Leibovitz's work in the past, and this one's kind of surprising, but mostly only because of Miley's age (15).
Overall I think it will get blown out of proportion only because there seems to be this "wh*re watch" going on with Miley; everyone seems to be just waiting for her to skank out at any second so they can be like see! I knew it! I knew she was a wh*re!
"And though the pose was Annie Leibovitz’s idea, the topless but demure portrait accompanying this article could be seen as another baby step, as it were, toward a more mature profile. “I think it’s really artsy,” Cyrus says. “It wasn’t in a skanky way.… And you can’t say no to Annie. She’s so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you’re like, O.K.”
23wow fifteen, thats pretty bad to being doing that kind of pic, it's pretty obvious people get irate about stuff like that when your still pretty young. im so fed up with hearing about amy, she is becoming so boring, she has got talent but she sucks live now, she just bobs and shuffles about on stage and the singing is pretty crap now, she should get her act together or just not bother. im a brit and was behind her but now shes just becoming a complete idiot, even more so than before if poss.
24Brian- I see your point, but you said, "at least Brit looked sexy." I don't care which team you bat for, the issue with Miley's photo is NOT that she doesn't look sexy. Her lack of sexiness is not the issue here? See?
The thing about her looking more underage than Brit is kind of a valid point though because it makes her seem more Lolita-esque, like they were trying to make her look even younger and more vulnerable. I think the shot is kind of cool, but I just have a huge issue with the fact that she is so young. Miley flashing a bra in a personal photo, I was a total goody-two shoes as a teen and I might have done something like that, but VF using a half-naked photo of a teenage girl is baffling. It's an adult magazine!
25If her parents were at the shoot, it should have been their responability to stop them when the pics got a little too mature for a 15 year old. I don't get why all of a sudden parents in Hollywood have stooped to this level of pimping out their kids for $$$$$$$. And that goes for baby pics too !!
26This is so common. Her agent probably leaked the photos, so she could get the publicity and the public retraction. Shame on her parents and everyone involved, who did it for the money.
27Just because young girls do not read Vanity Fair does not make this any better at all, IMO. For one, many of her fans will want to get the magazine because she is on the cover, but worse- the older people, older MEN who do read the magazine now. It really makes me sick to think about.
28Aren't a lot of models underage? I don't have any references, but I thought I'd read an article at some point that discussed how a lot of models (a lot of whom posed in shots not unlike Miley's here) were as young as 14.
I don't think the shots are a big deal. If I had a daughter, I wouldn't be crazy about her doing something like them, but if I had a daughter she wouldn't be in showbiz. Passing out drunk, being photographed doing cocaine, releasing a sex tape- those are big deals. I do think she's a little young for this, and wish that she wasn't in such a hurry to be grown up, but I don't think it's anything huge in the scheme of things.
29I do agree with u snowbunny
30This is just another sample of marketing technique!
31Unfortunalely nowadays to be on the news this is they type of thing to do. Compared to Blohan and Cheaparis this is nothing.
Ooo good point bookish. I think a lot of runway models are 16 and younger and they wear some pretty flimsy clothes most times.
32nomerz, this photo isn't on the cover.
anyhow i think what her parents are trying to create an "adult" image for her now so when she does become an adult it wouldn't be such a hard transition for her to get serious work.
but i think it's a bit too early to force this kind if image down on the public. if they wanted this mature lookf for her they could have her do some serious acting in a film.
also i call bullsh*t in all this apology crap. AS IF THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT KIND OF WORK ANNIE DOES.
33I dont think that picture of miley is very flattering
34The picture looks creepy in general. Definitely doesn't look like a 15 year old. It just goes to show you what our world has come too. Now-a-days girls are in such a rush to grow up and I think it's partly because of this. This 15 yr old girl has parents that are allowing her to take pictures like this because they are "artsy." I dunno...just weird. I really want to think Miley won't end up like Britney but I've never been convinced that she won't which is too bad.
35Well this picture is gross. I just watched Sweeney Todd last night and this looks like something out of there... not attractive at all. I love Annie, but what the hell?? Plus why would Vanity Fair readers care about Miley Cyrus?
36why do people do things like take nakedish pictures and then NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for being in the picture. No one put a gun to her head and her parents were there. Her father is posing in a pic with her.
And if people really are so APPALLED stop buying these magazines. Get over it.
37It's not really a great photo to begin with. But yeah definitely should not be doing that at 15!!
38she just looks really ugly!!!
39Miley is not what I would call "pretty" to begin with. Her teeth/gums are in need of something, I don't know what, and her voice always sounds so strained and in need of rest. Billy Ray was a one hit wonder with his "Achy Breaky heart" days, then he was a long haired joke when he tried to be a clothes designer when his singing career faded. He found a niche with Miley when he started pimping her out a few years ago and now it's taken off big time and he couldn't be happier. He went with the flow and thought it would make him more money with the Vanity Fair shoot, he really didn't care about how it looked or what her younger fans thought about it.
40Holy Lolita!
The timeless words of Dan Aykroyd stick in my mind. "Miley, you ignorant slut."
She was obviously conscious throughout the shoot, so stop blaming the amazing Annie.
41Nail hit on head JAG!
Whether or not they are for art... they are inappropriate.
I esp love the "Well there are other people doing it" argument. Yes there are 15 year old models and if they were photographed the same way I'd feel just as strongly.
My OP has nothing to do with Miley's image or role moodels status but I think parents that allow "superstars" to be their child's role model are stupid. It's an issue of decorum...these images put me in the mind of photographs taken of children in the child sex slave trade. Why would you want to have your children look like that. I would be less shocked if she was 17. These pics are a pedophile's dream good job...Pimpy Ray
42What is the big deal with the photos? 14-year-olds have always walked high fashion runways and posed for provocative ad campaigns. If this occurred in any other country, it wouldn't be a big deal. Americans, however, constantly feel the need to blow things out of proportion and make stories out of nothing. Furthermore, I would be honored if my daughter had been photographed by such a living legend. I think it's time the American media stop focusing on such bullsh*t stories and focus on more important issues...the war perhaps??
43i think you people just look for excuses to b*tch. who freaking cares? it shows her back, whoopty freaking doo. get over it already, it's not even a sexy pic...at all
44THE 15yr olds who are runway models are faceless NOBODYS! No one knows who they are or care who they are. They are girls who starve themselves so they can be walking clothes hangers on the cat walk.
Sad but true..
As far as Miley goes...she is on a Disney show that shows her as the epitome of innocence and being in a good family. MANY MANY girls look up to her. TRUE STORY--my 5 yr old just walked up and saw the photo of Miley and said "Look there's Hanna Montana". I said, how do you know that's Hanna Montana? She said. "Because it is her, but she looks like a bad girl and she looks really sad, why does she look like that"? My daughter said this with real concern in her eyes...We forget how the little child's mind works. To us these photos are just another day in the life of a Hollywood celeb, but to the little people who make these stars who they are, it means something totally different.
A friend of mine had a husband who went to those gross web sites..the ones like Rotten .com. She said at first he was shocked and found the images disturbing, but after watching them for a while it changed something in him where he became numb to it. She ended up divorcing him because she said he had changed all together inside. How do we know that small children seeing their idols appearing nude, and scantily dressed with boys touching them (on stomach) and getting pregnant (JSpears), is going to make them numb against things that should disturb them. Then as a country where will we be?
45In my opinion, it's a dramatic looking photgraph, does not, from my point of view, fall under 'sexy'..but rather it has a bit of a Rembrant or Vermeer quality to the image. I can actually see it as an oil painting.
I can see why many people are upset and bothered by it. Her face is very clearly the face of a 15 year old, and in North America, there has always been a rather fine line between art and porn, this image can be viewed either way, and given her age, yes, that makes the porn side of the line beyond creepy. I would personally prefer it if this particular idea had been resevered for an older actress/singer or if Miley and her family chose to wait until she was of age to do something like this.
That said, age of subject aside, it's a haunting image and quite lovely.
46This little chick always has a headline...good or bad. In my opinion she's starting to look like bad role models for young girls and simply embarassing the Disney corporation.
47Well, we all knew this would happen.
I'm not surprised. I don't really even know what to say. Everything has already been addressed in the above comments.
48historymystery, I agree with you. Miley is not sexy in any way. In fact, I think she is a strange looking little girl, but I digress. However, it is clear she and the marketing team responsible for making her will do anything for publicity. The MySpace photos were racier, and no matter how much some people want to believe her Disney image, she is, in fact, not so innocent or pure. The pics with her dad are a bit strange. Perhaps this would have come across much better if she were 18 or older, but then again these Disney-made "icons" do have expiration dates!
49heh...I wasn't implying anything regarding Miley's personal appearance (I generally don't pay much attention to her, I'm in my 30's, outside her demographic, and I've no children who might be fans). I'm referring solely to the image itself and the image concept.
I don't think it was ever meant to be sexual, but I can see how it can be viewed that way. Still think it would be better saved for an older actress/singer/model than one who is 15. Given how I'm personally interprating the image, rather...Wuthering Heights...yes, that and the Dutch paintings I'm thinking of and can't bring the titles to mind right now, an older woman would bring out the nuances of the image far better than a teen.
