The Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair photo scandal is still causing quite the debate. We read her apology, as well as VF's defense, and saw her seeming to be having fun during the shoot. Disney feels Miley was manipulated, but in the interview, Miley herself called the photos artsy and natural. Now, Annie Leibovitz issued a statement apologizing that the portrait was "misinterpreted," saying that she discussed both the photo and its context with Miley before the shoot and calling the image "classic" and "beautiful." Clearly Miley had a change of heart when she realized she was disappointing her fans, though it seems like the Cyrus family was fine with the concept before the backlash. What do you think — are the photos inappropriate?

Going to the VF website and looking at the behind the scenes shots, the photos were done tastefully. She just looks like she is wearing a messy/dirty tube top. I'm saying "other" because I saw the behind the scene look.
1Much ado!
2I think they're inappropriate.
However, I think this will be the least of the scandals we will have to worry about with her in years to come.
3i said what i had to say..so dont care
4She's well on her way to being the next Britney or Lindsay. Those pictures that she took of herself are distubring as well.
5she is so the next lindsay or britney. can't wait!
6I don't think its a huuuge deal, although I do think the fact that on the cover she looks like she has on a bedsheet and she is 15 year old disney star with alot of young girls looking up to her..so I had to say other because I am on the fence..
7I commented in the sugar bits about this, but I'll comment here as well...lol.
And this is based on the image shown in that posting.
I think this particular image concept should perhaps have been reserved for an older actress, singer or model. The image itself is not, in my mind, sexual, but more...I don't know...haunting, lovely, bringing to mind several oil paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.
But given the age of the subject (15), the fact that her face is so clearly that of a 15 year old, it can be seen as disturbing.
8SHE'S NOT TOPLESS!!! Give the girl a break...
9Much ado. Everyone just wants her to wh*re-out so they can be like "I called it!"
I have a feeling she's gonna be more Hilary Duff than Spears/Hilton.
10her fans have short attention spans. when the 10 year olds that look up to her see the pix the message for them stops right there. the message is not what most parents want for their kids. and think about it, tasteful of not, why would you want your 15 to pose w/o clothes? with all the other things to do in the world, why would that be something you wanted her to cross off at 15?
something happens to the parents of show business kids and they forget that their children are not adults. they are living the life adults but they are still minors and need supervision. here she goes on her way to the place where so many of the young girl stars seem to end up. britney, lohan, etc. why sexualize a child? why?
11What disturbs me is that she and her family base their opinions and feelings on what her fans think. She is a teenager and not as innocent as everyone's parents would like her to be. I started my acting out around this age and so do most normal teens. She just needs to keep her family around her and do what she feels comfortable with. Screw everyone else, even if it means Disney. But then that would be a loss of money and this is really what this "scandal" is all about. This magazine will sell like crazy and her popularity will continue to skyrocket. Anyone remember the first Britney Rolling Stone? In my opinion it was the best layout she has done.
12I agree with historymystery, though I don't really find the pictures disturbing. What bothers me is that young girls look up to her, and the picture makes her look like she's all rolled up in the sheets after sex, which isn't something her fans should be fretting about just yet. If I had a young daughter who was a Hannah Montana fan, I would not be happy, but I also recognize that Vanity Fair is marketed to an adult audience, not to teeny boppers. I think all the press is just making these photos more visible to younger girls and making a tasteful photo seem inappropriate.
13It not as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be- I think they could have made the mag chosen photos the fun ones instead of the sultry trying to look sexy ones. But her parents were there and it is Vanity Fair- so Im sure thats exactly what they wanted it to look like. It looks like to me shes ready to start taking steps away from the disney channel at this point in her life.
14Totally and completely much ado!
15Didn't Brooke Shields pull the same stuff when she's about her age or younger?
16I think they're inappropriate. And if I had a 15yr old daughter I definitely would not have allowed taking those pictures. In general, I'm not sure if this is a healthy development for our teenagers. Being slutty seems to be the an easy access to the adult world, but it's not in the long term and sooner or later she'll regret that she couldn't or wouldn't enjoy her childhood. And yes, I'm calling a 15yr old a child. I don't blame this on Miley, at least not entirely, her parents should protect her, not expose her.
17i dont really think its a big deal.. thats right she isnt topless.
18I'm on the fence personally...I mean the photos themselves aren't a big deal and both her parents were there....but the fact still remains that she is only 15 and that is where it gets just a tad creepy..you don't want to see 15 year old girls wrapped up in a bed sheet as to suggest post-coitus and such....tho I am fully aware that girls that young are readily having sex these days...which I find a dang shame!
19I don't think that the photos in general are too risky or overly sexual; if it had been a fairly older actress. It's hard too remember that Miley is ONLY 15, and that's why I can understand where others are coming from in thinking that the pics are inappropriate. She is so mature for her age, but that doesn't make it justifiable to have a 15 year old posing topless
20I feel that the photos are too suggestive for a 15 year old. If you stop and think about it as a parent, would you want a photo of your 15 year old in a bedsheet plastered on a magazine spread? If you are a parent of a non-celebrity you are probably saying no. Teen celebs nowadays are sexualized WAY too soon and everyone just says, 'Hey, that's showbiz!" I don't think Annie did anything wrong though, as the parents and Miley agreed to the shots at the time and even saw digital copies of the shots. I think hindsight is 20/20 and everyone is just trying to cover their a**.
21i don't know, i'm conflicted, they do seem suggestive, but it seems like her parents were on-board with it. i find those internet photos of her and her bf to be WAY more suggestive.
22I don't think those pictures are such a big deal, but then again I had to google Myley Cyrus, becuase I had no idea who she is...
Still, I say the photos aren't a big deal, though someone (i.e her parents) should've thought about letting her do it a bit more throughly. After all, she's 15 and her fans are certainly even younger.
Even though, I think the photos are classy I don't understand why you need to portray 15-year-olds in such a way.
Oh, right. For the Daddies of the fans.
23the photos are not inappropriate, but they are ugly! she looks horrible!!!
24oh and remind me of the last time 10 year olds read vanity fair?!
people need to quit freaking out and throwing these pictures all over the internet and tv and let it be.
Ayayayayayay enough already.
25Although she is covered with a sheet, I think its too much of a sexually suggestive picture to be called art. I've seen the behind the scene pics. and though she was wearing jeans and her parents were there, I was creeped out by them. In this age of ridiculous high numbers of sexual crimes against children, its a shame her parents approved this. I also feel they are only recanting because of the backlash.
26Maybe the photos don't show much, but IMO a 15 year old should not be posing for sexy/ suggestive photos. Especially one that is a role model for young children. Most of her fans are actually in elementary school! And they all aspire to be like Miley... so I would think her parents have terrible judgement!
27I totally agree with marybethrizalucy, she started apologizing only when she found out what her fans and other people thought about the photos. In the interview she even said she finds them tasteful and artsy and now she's all like 'I was misled and blablabla...'
This was all planned and the publicity this has been given is way overdone! This magazine will sell like crazy and in the end that's what it's all been done for, so those people succeeded at their job!
I'm kinda tired of Miley being overly sexy and then being all like 'I think it's normal for a 15 year old girl'. Or you're a Disney star and you stay wholesome and covered up for the fans sakes or you decide to branch out, but please don't be two-faced, and stick to your image!
28I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like she's strutting around unwed with a baby bump like some other teen role model I can think of.
29I think people are just making a whole "hollabaloo" out of nothing. The photos were done tastefully and didn't look trashy. Seriously, people need to chill out.
30You would think that she and her family would have known what the public reaction would be. I'm not a fan, I saw her and her Dad on Leno and she wouldn't let either of them talk. I think she lives in
31a "bubble" and is in to herself and not in to any consequences.
I'm on the fence also. I do feel as though the media and everyone has taken the picture out of context, however, the photographer, the Cyrus's, Vanity Fair, etc, should have realized how it would have been potrayed and what it would appear to be to the public. I believe she was dressed, as these photos show, but it is potrayed like she is not. I just don't think it was a smart decision...I don't think a 15 year-old has any business showing that much skin...reguardless of the intent. I also think that this exact same photo could have been OK had the background, etc, been a bit less seductive look. She has what *appears* to be a bed sheet and a kind of "come here" seductive look. I think thats where the problem comes in.
32Inappropriate. It just is not right in my book. No matter how you slice and dice it, kids look up to her and she makes MILLIONS off of them. The least she could do was put a normal shirt on to send them a positive message. It isn't like this is her first provocative picture. It just does not seem right to me.
33i think this has been blown completely out of proportion. and i think it is a backlash stemming from those other photos that circulated the internet last week. annie lebowitz is a respected and renowned photographer and it isn't as if these were like the lyndsay lohan or britney spears type pictures. she's wearing a sheet wrapped around her...infact she has on more than she would if she was in a swimsuit. she is fifteen and yes her parent's should have thought better of having that photo run in the magazine but at the same time there is nothing for her to be ashamed or embarrassed about.
34These photos are terribly inappropriate because this is a huge Disney star whose fans are young children, not to mention she's still a child herself! I agree with everyone else that this pose was too mature for her and should have been done with an older actress. Sure I think the photo was tasteful but not for a 15yr old!
35i guess because i am nearly 2x her age i could really care less. that being said - if her and her minders are really that concerned about building the miley/hannah brand in a certain way, more thought and care should have been factored into the whole "to include or not include" process of the photo selection.
also, if u are an under-12 hannah fan, you probably are not going to be reading vanity fair anyway - but i guess their parents are probably reading v.f. and it may make them think twice w.r.t. buying into the brand.
36I am more disturbed about her bony back in that picture, frankly! I don't think the photos were too suggestive, perhaps a bit too much for a 15-year old, but I am much more bothered by her thinness showing so much.
37Give the girl a break...her parents were there and if they feel thats okay for their child then who are we to judge!
38With this whats next Miley in Playboy!!!!!SO INAPPROPRIATE it seems like this would be a picture of a sexual predator way to young to be taking any kind of clothes off for a girl her age kids that are 3 look up to her what image is she giving........well let me tell you a very trashy one.
39The part that makes it inappropriate is that she has built her whole career on being the image of wholesomeness and a role model for young girls. She claims she won't be another Britney, but she's well on her way with the dresses she wears to award shows, internet photos, etc.
And just like Britney, Miley isn't taking any responsibility for this mess. It's always someone else's fault. Annie Leibovitz is an icon herself. With such an impeccable reputation as a professional, trying to blame the photographer is the wrong road for the Cyrus family to take.
40I noticed the bones to Laura, but I thought maybe i was thinking too much about it. Glad someone else saw something, that almost looks unhealthy.
41i think she could be the next lindsay. And that's sad.Anyway i can understand the photos...they're not way to sexy, but still it's a beginning...We should miley!
42I would sue Annie Leibovitz for making me look like Shannen Doherty. Besides that the photos seem fine.
43Her true colors are finally showing. Time to take her off the air. Enough already with the talentless bimbo on the tube.
44Too young. Plus the one shot of her laying across her dad just looks a bit wierd.
45i really dont get this. Im sorry but i dont understand why this has been taken out of proportion. What´s so sick about her posing with her father? I think the heart of this society is pretty rotten to find that shot disturbing.
46She´s 15 years old, she´s with her parents. The turn this has taken is kind of ridiculous.
We should be wasting our energy in other things that really are disturbing...say, girls beauty pageants
she is not topless!
47I actually kinda agree with this article: http://gawker.com/384674/why-its-annie-leibovitzs-fault
48I think everyone is getting a little excited over something that is not that big of a deal. I think she should remember Brooke Shields, when she was young and look how she turned out. Mylie's parents were there. I think the person here to criticize is Annie - she could have been a littler more conservative and remembered that she wasn't taking pictures of an adult. I'm really getting tired of everyone saying that Mylie is going to end up like Britney or Lindsey. I think she had a very strong family relationship and will be okay. Her dad knows what celebrity can be like and I am sure he is not going to let things go to far.
49I think it is a bit much for a 15 year old
