Bad news on the Beckham front. This weekend, only months before his heavily publicized move to play soccer in LA, David Beckham injured his knee in a game. While the extent of the damage isn't yet known, the coach is saying that it could be serious. Sadly, his family was in the stands at the time celebrating Brooklyn's birthday while watching from a luxury box. Here's more:

"The day started so well with a birthday party for his son," a family friend tells PEOPLE. "But it ended with medical scans." (Beckham's eldest son, Brooklyn, turned 8 years old on Sunday.) "Both David and Victoria are really anxious at the moment, waiting to hear what the results will be," adds the friend. "It's not a good day for the family."
Before the match on Sunday, the couple had taken sons Brooklyn, Romeo, 4, and Cruz, 2 to a Madrid burger restaurant. "The kids had a ball. It was Brooklyn's eighth birthday party," says the friend. "And all his school friends were there too."
Beckham's hopes of rejoining the English national team this year were also dashed after the injury on Sunday night. Beckham had played well, even firing one shot into the opposition's goal crossbar. "It's difficult to know what is going to happen now," says the Beckham friend. "Everyone is praying this is not major."
So sad, poor Becks. And especially that it had to happen on Brooklyn's birthday. Let's hope David recovers quickly and doesn't need surgery or a long recovery time. We want him in top shape for the LA Galaxy!
UPDATE: It looks like he's out for 6 weeks due to ligament damage. Apparently it could have been a lot worse and it could hurt his chances for the National team but there's hope he's all better for the big move to LA.

1damn that sucks! I thought Real Madrid was keeping him on the sidelines to prevent such an injury. Or maybe that was before he offically signed w/ LA

3Poor baby. I really hope that it's just a strain and he'll be back and lookin hot in no time.
4I don't like soccer but I LOVE to look at him, he's so beautiful!
5I hope Victoria is taking care of her man. He better get back to normal soon. USA is waiting for him to put soccer on the map.
6****"Everything in life is only for now."-Avenue Q****
Oh god he's probably the last person on earth to put soccer back on the map.. He left UK because he's passed it, meaning he couldn't get the contract the wanted here, there are far too many better players than him. He was also fired from being the english captain team. His wife isn't popular here at all. We brits think she's so over the top and has a terrible dress sense. We don't like the Beckams.
7Victoria knows this and this is why she is moving to America. I hope they can make more money there. Basically they have been let go from pretty much all of the commercial contracts here in UK.
8I'm pretty sure SOME Brits like them...
9The tragedy.
10However will they survive this?
Oh no, does that mean no reality tv show?
11Boo f-ing hoo, not that he contributes much to Real Madrid and even if he was being transferred he still has a contract with Real Madrid and that means that when they tell him to jump he'll say how high. I don't know why people keep on saying he will change soccer. Chicks like him but honestly I don't see all the women paying $30 every weekend to see him play. If Pele couldn't create enough interest in soccer, the former cpatain of the England under-achieving soccer team and whose known for his good looks and skinny wife and serial cheating will not change that. What a waste of $250 mil.
12Victoria isn't popular in Ireland or England, she comes across as stuck up and very vain. She LOVES the limelight, more so than David. He seems nice, more down to earth.
13Aww poor guy.
14It's Alright Guys! He's only gonna be out for 4 weeks - these injuries happen all the time. Its sad that he Definately won't be able to play for England because the Euro 2008 qualifiers and in like 3 weeks
15To the above comments - I'm a Brit and i LOVE them!
16he is so hotttttttttttttttttt!!
17Poor guy. He's so damn fine.
18i like the beckhams and i agree that theres a possibility that david coming here will put soccer on the map in the US so hope he heals well and all the best to him
19oh good.. he doesn't contribute anything positive to a match anyway. just sit on the bench, beckham!
20to the above comments- its not true at all that us brits dnt like them, victorias wicked. im guessing its the people who havnt seen them talk on tv that has this perception of them as they dnt do plugging much because they dont care for all the attention. its the papers who arnt very popular that right nasty stuff about them because they want their papers to sell so they churn out 'storys'
21dont care....he's hott but he's not that great enough to care about
22He has been playing so well lately that he is not the washed up player we (Europe) thought he was after the World Cup.
I am now seriously against this move because he does not deserve to waste his talent in America...sorry but it had to be said.
23Hopefully the novelty wears off and he changes his mind and stays in Europe.
24Or hopefully he stays 1 year hates it and returns to Europe
25the problem is, europe doesn't want him back. that's why he went to america because at least they would let him play even without his talent, only his status.
26that's really unfortunate. i hope he has a speedy recovery.
27I cannot get over how gorgeous this guy is. Not many men take my breath away, but this guy... WOW! Posh is one lucky chica.
28I am a Brit and I've heard them talk and honestly USA can have them, so many poeple hate them over here they are sick of Victoria desperately seeking the limelight and pushing 'Brand Beckham' in everyone's faces. He isn't good enough to play for England there are so many better players than him, he reached his peak a few years ago and it's been down hill from there. He lost his major advertising deals when England dropped him, and Real are not gonna sign him again even if he wanted to stay, so that's why he's moving to America...that and Posh is so desperate to keep her skeletal frame in the limelight! America wants a piece of Brand Beckham and the revenue taht having him will bring for a couple of months, it's not his skill they want. If Pele couldn't do it (and he was a hundred times the footballer David is) then no-one can.
29no offence but if he was so bad at what he does now then y would clubs be falling over eachother to sign him with tons of cash. i do think he was at his peak a few years ago but hes stil a reali great player plus who cares if he wasnt so great anymore, i used to watch the football just for him, hes still gorgeous, that hasnt faded
30I hope he recovers soon. That stinks for him.
31hills, if you actually have any soccer knowledge then you would know that clubs are not falling over each other to sign him up. they want him out of the european league, he's been a bench master for real for a long time, he hasn't contributed ANYTHING.
and exactly, you only watch him because he's gorgeous. but in soccer, you need more than looks to succeed.
32Bummer that he's not as great a soccer player as he's been hyped to be, but with his good looks, it doesn't seem to matter. I hate to say this, but he'll fit in great in America -- we know nothing about soccer and are stunned to ignorance by a gorgeous person. He'll be in the movies in no time flat.
33i just think his hott.
34Ouch!
35jade_elephant Your comments on Beckham make me laugh. Doesnt contribute much? Bench master? Since Capello stop his hissy fit at Beckham hes started every game (Other than Atletico as he was suspended) hes been one of Madrids stand out performers. He contributed to all 3 of their goals against Bayern, was their best players against Getafe and stood out again Socidedad to.
No other top clubs in euope wanted him? Thats not true. Both Inter and AC Milan wanted him...Milan have publically admmited they were disapointed to miss out on him. The Bayern president also expressed an interest and Ramon Calderon admitted he wanted to keep him at Real.
He is not a average player. You dont win 6 League titles 2 Fa cups and a Champions league by being average. You dont play in Sir Alex Fergusons historic treble team by being average..Nor do you become the 5th highest capped player for you country or be one of only 3 players in the history of the champions league to play 100 games. People often use Beckhams good looks to mock him but the amount he has won and achived in football/soccer is admirable. Even now, when hes past his peak hes performing well...you musnt watch Madrid otherwise you wouldnt post so much drivel. Even Capello has praised him..id imagine he knows a tad more about whos good at football and who isnt. The Bernabue are one of the most demaning crowds in europe, yet they chant his name through-out games and he always gets a standing ovation...you dont get that for just being good looking.
36That's gotta hurt.
37Kiss the boo-boo?
38I have never watched him play soccer but I will admit that he is easy on the eyes.
