This Kentucky Derby was full of highs and lows this weekend as the usual slew of celebrities donned their finest hats and preppiest suits to catch the big race. Naturally Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were there and looking ridiculous and even Adrian Grenier cleaned up for the big day — well, kind of. Nick Lachey, his brother Drew and Joey Fatone hosted the after party and didn't look too emotionally scarred by having to see the runner up horse Eight Belles have to be euthanized on the track immediately after breaking both her ankles finishing the race. The crown belonged to Big Brown and despite the sad outcome for the filly, I'm sure there were more than a few mint juleps for everyone.

why is speidi everywhere these days?
f*cking annoying
1Molly Sims looks fantastic- that's how you dress for the derby!
2Has anyone else noticed that even these venerable old institutions that used to be considered a fuddy-duddy tradition are being overrun by two bit stars?
3Wow - D-List central.
4Molly does look fab; I hear she's been going forever so it's no surprise she got it right. In general, I always thought she was overlooked. She looks great a lot.
5Who cares what these F-listers were wearing? A beautiful animal died for their entertainment. I hate horse racing.
Ruffian
Barbaro
Eight Belles
RIP
6OMG Heidi what are you wearing???
I could never wear that ugly clothes
7Ok, wtf are those fools all over the place? UGH!
8I had no idea that so many celebs attended the Kentucky Derby!! Since when did this happen?
9I absolutely love to see Molly Sims, Gabriella Union & Chelsea Clinton! Molly is looking Fab!
Spencer looks freaky and Heid looks fake; nothing new there!
Molly Sims is the only one that looks acceptable, at all.
10ps - If I were going to the Derby I'd dress like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman at the polo match
11Okay, Spencer HAS to be dressing terribly just to get even more unworthy attention!! And, I can't believe Eight Belles died..that is seriously sad.
12chellybean- me, too! I love that movie and Julia was fab at the match
13The 'Sport of Kings practices abusive treatment of horses and riders . These people in attendance have no idea what they are contributing to. They think this is a chic, classy event. Any horse lover knows that the racing industry is a heartless, money-grubbing, next stop to the glue factory. The attendees in the photos above are completely ignorant, smiling in their ridiculous hats. How ironic, especially when many of the featured individuals claim 'green' living, and tote miniature toy dogs in their purses.
14Pickle, I have noticed that as well. It's a shame that these talentless, unintelligent celebrities have become such an obsession in this country.
15It's been said before but I'll say it again, please stop posting about Heidi and Spencer.
16winniecooper, unless you actually know anything about the sport of horseracing please refrian from giving an uneducated opinion. Thoroughbreds are born to run and compete. It's in their blood and that's what their first love is. Take a look at thoroughbreds on farms and you'll see them running against each other just for play. So to say that people only care about the money or are forcing the horses to run if ignorant. What happened to Eight Belles was a freak accident and was very sad but they are making many strides to give the horses the safest possible environment to run by using synthetic turf, etc.
17i always think that it's so interesting when all the celebs go to the derby. most of them are just there to be seen and don't care much for the race.
as for the filly - that's just awful...i always hate to hear things like this. it's like during last years race when the horse broke his leg, and all the treatment that they tried to do for him and it didn't end well. i think that it's such a shame that a Filly did soo well and then this happened right after the race.
18Of course Molly Sims did it right...she's a Kentucky native!
19PS. Spencer told a local reporter that he was definitely going to have a horse in the derby next year. He obviously learned a great deal about horse-racing lol.
yeah not the cream of the crop in celeb land and that heidi person keeps sprouting up (argh). but i do like ed norton.
20Heidi's outfit looks almost like the one Jessica Simpson wore when she was still with Nick Lachey. Geesh - that chick can't get it together can she?
21Exercising horses is a wonderful thing. But horse racing has much to do with what happens during the breeding and training process. The racing events themselves are just a small part of the sport. Accidents on the track are not what I am addressing. Hundreds of horses are bred a year, specifically to race. Only a few horses are considered top potential. The ones that don't make the cut have to be disposed of, as do the horses that don't make enough money for their upkeep. There is nothing offensive about the idea of horse racing, running horses, or having them compete. But many of the practices that go on behind the scenes are disturbing to me.
22Perhaps, if Eight Belles hadn't been mercilessly whipped into running what was obviously too fast for her, Eight Belle's would probably still be here.
I know lets harness humans to carriages and the humans in the carriage gets to whip mercilessly the ones pulling the carriage so they'll move faster.
What? It's ok to whip a horse but not a person?
23These people do know this was the kentucky derby not the casting for Love Boat 2?
24First, get your facts straight. The first photo is from Friday night, the Barnstable Brown party. All the other photos are before the races started. There are no photos of celebrities after the race. winniecooper is ignorant and I agree with fleuryfairy. Owners and trainers do not have their horse race if they know that something is physically wrong with the horse. The experts think that 8 belles may have had hairline fractures that they did not know about. On another note, Nick Lachey was born in Kentucky too and then moved to Cincinnati when he was a child. Cincinnati is on the border of Kentucky, even the Cincinnati airport is in Kentucky. Also, just Nick and Drew hosted the Intouch party, Joey wasn't a host.
25I live in Louisville, KY, and hate Derby time. Too many people here. I hate horses though. I live in the wrong state!
26I think the whole point of the Derby is to wear the hugest most hideous hat you can find...it's no wonder they all look horrible! I actually dont think Heidi was too bad though compared to the others.
27Fleurfairy and Romes, I wish what you were both saying were true, but unfortunately it isn't. Yes, horses were born to run. They are prey animals that need to run to survive. And yes, they love to run, but racing at 2 years old when they are still growing is not at all "natural". On average 2 racehorses a day are euthanized at tracks big and small across the country. We only hear about the big names in the big races. I have seen the damage racing does firsthand, as I own 2 rescued, retired racehorses.
28Aw. Heidi looks great! Adrien's date looks pretty, too.
And whats the big deal about celebs being there?
So what?
That's what they do.
They go where whatever is happening is happening because they can.
If I had off from work and $ to blow on a plane ticket, I'd have gone, too
29shouldn't heidi be runing in the race
30To snickersbBar , if you know about horses they only stand up, they hardly ever lie down. If a horse has a leg injury they are euthanized because it is almost impossible to recover from one leg injury. Barbaro is about the only horse I know that recovered but eventually died. Horses weight about a ton and their legs are very thin. Because of their weight and the size of their legs , it is almost impossible to recover. Not putting any weight on the injured leg effects the horses hips and balance. This happens to all horses not just race horses. I thought the Kentucky Derby was three year olds, I don't think any race track has two year olds racing.
31Okay, some corrections:
But I've seen plenty of them lying down.
First, the derby is all three year olds. And No, horses are not fully developed yet, even at three. Most breeders of Non-horse racing horses will probably tell you to wait until they are at least three, if not almost 4 before you ever ride them. These thoroughbreds start racing when they are 2 years old. Their joints are not fully developed. So racing does put unnecessary strain on their underdeveloped joints.
Second, the average weight of a horse is around 800-1300 pounds, sort of a far cry from "a ton" which is 2000 pounds. I'm sure that some draft breeds will reach that weight, but not your typical racehorse. Plus, horses legs are probably strong enough to carry twice that weight.
Third, I've owned lots of horses, and most of them will lay down to sleep each night. You won't often catch one down and napping, because they don't like to be caught in that kind of position. But you could definately hear them all getting up in the morning when you turn on the lights... I'm sure it was mostly to get to their food bowls more quickly
Fourth, it is true, MOST racehorses will be put down if they have broken legs. I believe that they reason that they were trying to keep Barbaro healthy was so that they could breed him. A filly with two broken legs is essentially "useless" to owners and breeders, as terrible as it is to say.. that's the nature of their business. The owners don't usually love these horses, they are an investment.
I cried for hours after that race.. I know how difficult it is to have to make the decision to put your horse down. What you have to remember was that she kept running on those broken legs, she didn't collapse immediately, I'm guessing that it was really bad, possibly compound fractures, and most likely irreversible damage if they were going to put her out of her pain immediately. Otherwise they would have taken her in before euthanizing her. It was a very sad day.
32I would buy all of Heidi's clothing and every issue of Pboy to prevent what happened to that poor horse
33please sign the petition at Petas website u just clik
PETA's methods annoy the hell out of me and I strongly disagree with some of their stances. I'll not sign anything attached to them.
I'll also reserve judgement for this incident everyone is talking about (I don't personally follow horseracing) until I gain all information regarding it.
34uptown_girl, I don't find it that shocking that someone who obviously owns a few horses would be deeply upset by what happened.
35Wow, does this mean Adrian Grenier is actually dating Isabel Lucas? I read that here the other day, but didn't think it was true...looks like it might be!
36Yeah, actually I did.
My mom was there at the event, and my family has owned horses since I was two and a half years old.
I was also upset because my mother had just been at the Rolex three day event and one of the horses that had to be put down fell right in front of her, so she was already upset from that.
Clearly you've never had to put down a pet that was practially your sibling. Every time you hear about another person having to go thru the same thing, it brings up horrible memories. Plus you can totally understand the decision that those people had to make.
Oh please forgive me for having a heart...
37Thank you mondaymoos.
38Ugh, Speidi!
39uM...This looks more like the Has Been party
40Wow! It looks like every 'use to be' and 'wannabe' celeb showed up at this event. Everyone there is a D-lister. The old folkie boy banders that crave any kind of work - is a joke. And they all look completely awful.
