His band has a crazy devoted fanbase that appears to be composed mostly of 17-year-old girls. I'm sure that's adding to his ego.

Personally I believe he suffers from either ADHD or Bipolar Disorder, both of which are common in highly creative people. It's not a curse to have a "mental illness" it just makes us a little different that the rest of you...
