John Mayer was looking just a little touristy as he made his way through Amsterdam yesterday, trying to keep a low profile under his black hood. Looks like he was flying solo for a bit, but we have a feeling that Jennifer Aniston wasn't too far away. While John's music is what brings him overseas, it's no secret that the media is more interested in his current relationship than his shows. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, John does his best to gloss over his dating history while giving us a few hints about what he's really like. Here are highlights:
- On dating: "I've never cheated on anybody, so you won't have anybody coming out the woodwork saying that I have. Instead of worrying about career damage, I've dated women. All I've ever done was decided that I fancied somebody, and said, 'Would you like to go out and get a meal somewhere?' And done so in a social setting, where other people can see you. And then maybe 'Would you like to go have another meal?' Maybe did that a few times. And then, when I realized that I didn't wanna wrong anybody by continuing, said, 'I'd rather be a great friend to you than a bad boyfriend.' I swear to God, I have a really good track record!"
- On how the public perceives him: "I think I'm a good beer-buddy. The only people I rub up wrong are the people who think I shouldn't be having this good a time: the people who go, 'No one man should be that happy.' 'Not fair,' is what you should have the world screaming to you. That is how you should be pissin' people off."
- On making decisions: "The one thing I'll take with me to my grave, hopefully, is that I've never made a decision based on anything other than my heart."

- On people's perceptions of his motivation: "It's a very interesting thing, man," he says, fidgeting as he locates what he hopes are the right words. "I never really think about money, to be honest with you. I've never done things for money." He pauses briefly, then corrects himself. "Er, very few things have I done for money." Another pause - this one more the deliberate timing of a comedian. "I've never done things solely for money," he grins. "I think that's what I wanna say. But the idea that there would be any advantage...?"
John may have spent his fair share of time with a few of Hollywood's most beautiful women, but his sincerity definitely helps to set him apart from a couple of other playboys out there.

23I adore him. Dating multiple people is not cheating and he is doing what a great number of young single men do. They date around and surely sleep with some of the people they date. So what? The same could be said for the majority of my friends and it doesn't make them bad people. As long as he isn't leading these women on I don't see a problem.
24I've followed Mayer since 2001 and he's always been a huge comedian with lots of wit. He would tell stories to his audience between songs laced with humor. His fans understand this, but to the average onlooker, he appears to be a humongous poophead.
As for him "lying" about his age, I think that was a reference to when he won his first Grammy. He commented that he felt sixteen or something like that, and people mistook it as him saying he really was sixteen. He meant to be humorous but it didn't quite come out right. See: "My Stupid Mouth."
I hated it when he dated Jessica. I don't find him particularly attractive but have always been fond of his music. Besides Aniston being a bit older than him, who cares that they're dating? I think they're pretty cute together and it's about 100 times better than Jessica Simpson!
The one thing that stood out in my mind when it comes to Mayer and his integrity in dating is when all that crap came out about Jessica, he actually made a public statement defending her. That was a really awesome thing to do, especially because they had recently parted ways at the time. But I guess people overlook that to get some satisfaction out of their need to find something to abhor.

And the line "I'd rather be a good friend than a bad boyfriend" makes complete sense. If a guy wasn't interested anymore I'd rather he broke up with me than cheated on me or
treated me bad.
28I adore John Mayer. Love love love JM. It's rare to find normalcy, honesty and sincerity in a man, especially a man with a great sense of humor and a tremendous talent. Must be the Connecticut in him. I want to have a beer with him...and I don't drink beer! I'm guessing it's like when he's addressing the crowd at his shows.
I must add, too...any lady that has issue with "I'd rather be a good friend than a bad boyfriend" must have their own issues to deal with...why would you want to waste time with someone who's just not that into you?

First of all, pictures of situations you aren't involved in can be read many different ways. Second, if he broke up with her, is he required to act a certain way? We (including you) have no idea what the circumstances were. Third and finally, his public statement defending her came well after they'd broken up. Long enough after that he shouldn't have felt any obligation to do anything of the sort. You can call it PR all you want, but I beg to differ.
31If he'd broken up with her while in Cabo, why would not calling her any more be out of the ordinary or crappy behavior. As far as I'm concerned, once you've broken up with someone, expectations like that go out the window. I don't know what kind of people you've been lucky enough to date.
