Halle took full advantage of the warm LA weather in her white-hot sundress while shopping yesterday. Looking at how glamorous she is now, you'd never guess that she was once so broke she was forced to live in a homeless shelter. In the April issue of Reader's Digest she talks all about the difficult road to success and the tough love from her mother that helped to get her there. Here are highlights:
"When I moved to Chicago, [my mother] drove me there, but I don't think she ever thought it would pan out. After a month or two, I ran out of money and called her. I said, Mom, I hate to ask you this, but could you send me some money? I just have rent money; I can't eat this week. And she said no. She said, "I'm not going to start this calling home asking Mom for money. No, figure it out or come home." I was so mad. I didn't speak to her for a year and a half."
"But I'm actually grateful she did that, because it taught me how to take care of myself and that I could live through any situation, even if it meant going to a shelter for a small stint, or living within my means, which were meager."
"But a girl had to do what a girl had to do. You can do that when you're 21 and ambitious and your eyes are this big and you don't want to go home," she tells the mag. "I became a person who knows that I will always make my own way."
First Jennifer Garner and now Halle? Sounds like opening up about your days as a struggling actress is the thing to do! Obviously Halle's determination (and probably something to do with those good looks) is part of what has kept her in the game and won her an Oscar. We bet that gorgeous supermodel boyfriend isn't such a bad part of success, either.

Love me some Halle!!!!
1I'm glad it worked out but allowing your kid to live in a shelter is a bit harsh...
2Well that gives me hope! I don't want to be an actress, but perhaps my days of living off Top Raman (13 cents a meal, baby) are numbered! At least it's not a homeless sheltar, geeeee, gonna go count my blessings.
3Yeah, I don't know if I could be that harsh. I want my children to be independant, but I don't want them to suffer, either. And everyone knows becoming an actor in Hollywood is tough. But I'm glad that Halle made it.
4If she didn't talk with her mother for a YEAR and a half, I think it says a lot. There is no mother that I know of that would be okay with their child living in a shelter if they had the means to help them out (at least for a short period of time). Perhaps Halle's mom's "tough love" had a bearing on Halle's history of hooking up with bad mates?
5Hard to understand why her mom refused to help; guess she thought her daughter would just give up and go home.
6I like Halle, hope she finds happiness.
Just read the article. Yeah right, she HAS HAD A LOT of PLASTIC SURGURY. Look at pics of her in her early late teens to early 20's compared to today. Her nose is different, her lips are bigger, and boobs are bigger. Celebs all lie about this.
7Halle is such a class act and her body is perfect!
8I dig Halle, she always sound like she's learned from her life expierences.
9i think her mom did the right thing- you can't baby someone forever, at some point you have to learn to fend for yourself. BTW I love her dress in these pics!
10cute dress.
11I think Halle's mother thought Halle would come home.I don't think the mother knew about the homeless shelter since Halle wasn't speaking to her for a year and half.
It's is a reminder that everyone goes through tough times, and success does not come without a lot of hard work.
12Whatever happened ended up working out nicely for her in the end.
13I'm completely behind in this - who is her gorgeous boyfriend?!
14why is it all these celebs have a sob story??? admit it! they were just lucky!
15I love Halle!! Is she still with that sexy Canadian guy???
16She's so beautiful!
17She is gorgeous.
I bet it killed her mom to show her tough love!
18I love that dress too. I have always been a bit jealous of people that have such a nice figure that they can wear these carefree-looking clothes. Very pretty!
19Halle is so gorgeous! I don't think I could ever do what her mom did though! Not that I have children but my parents have always supported everything I have done so Im sure their parenting skills will rub off on me someday!
20glad it worked out for her
21Everyone has to start somewhere. At least she figured it out. There are still those who haven't.
22Not to be rude or anything....
23my parents are all about the tough love but they would never allow me to live in shelter. there had to be something else going with that relationship
Halle never lived in a shelter--may have done for her role prep for Jungle Fever. True about her mum not giving her the rent money when her roommate supposedly ditched out on the rent. Always had a roommate--first a friend who they always used to party with and then some guy with AIDS (the guy story has been mentioned in interviews b4)...partial publicity stunt.
24she's obviously naturally beautiful. no make up. still pretty.
