25Christie has to pay his legal fees for the same reason that Britney has to pay part of Kevin's legal fees. When one party has massively more money than the other party, the court often stipulates that the wealthy party covers some or all of the legal expenses in a divorce and/or child custody case.
I know it's in California family law, and most likely NY as well. It's so both sides can have equal representation, rather than one with piles of cash can lawyer up and win because the other side can't afford a lawyer.
