On a related note, I now have no respect for Angelina Jolie. She has changed this 3 year old boy's name to Pax Thien. Cool that she adopts needy kids but cmon you don't change a 3 year old child's name!!!
That little boy surely responds to his name and is most likely learning to write it. I mean, damn! From now on, she shall be known as Skeletor! I am how would she like some random ass person to just up and change her name? The little boy's name used to be something like Pham Quang Sang or something like that.
How stupid and sad, I think. She changed it to Pax which means peace and Thien which means Sky. If the child was like 3 weeks old or 3 months old maybe then it would be okay but 3 years old???!!

This family it’s giving a new life to this kid, not just bringing him home. He now has a name that his PARENTS choose for him .And don’t give me this crap about don’t have respect for Angelina, PLEASE, people like you its just waiting for her to make any mistake so you can throw rocks on her. 22yeah someone explained the whole name change thing on the last adoption post (what, like 5 minutes ago, lol). seems odd to change the name of a child this age to me, but after reading the explaination i thought maybe "okay". i wonder how much he will remember of his life before angie and brad. 3 1/2 seems old enough to have only a few memories, like leaving the orphanage and his favorite people there. poor little guy, just going on the plane is probably scary for him. his new life will be so much more than he could ever have dreamed of.

It seems there's some discussion on whether Angelina picked the baby or was given preferential treatment. Here is a press release from Heidi Gonzalez of Adoption from the Heart, the adoption agency used by Angelina and Brad to arrange the adoption of Pax.

“In applying to adopt 3-yr-old Pax Thien, Ms. Jolie followed the same course as all prospective adoptive parents who apply to our Vietnam program. Throughout her adoption process, which began in the summer of 2006, she has received no preferential treatment from the Vietnamese government or Adoptions From The Heart, and contrary to earlier reports, her application was not fast tracked.
Despite rumors that she chose her child, Ms. Jolie received a referral, just like any other parent adopting from Vietnam. In late 2006, she was referred a child who had been legally determined to be available for adoption and who fit within the parameters for which she had been approved to adopt. She accepted the first and only referral given to her.
In addition, we can confirm the statement given by Nguyen Van Trung, Director of Tam Binh Orphanage, that Ms. Jolie has neither made, nor promised to make, any financial contributions to his orphanage. So, in other words, Brad and Angelina received no preferential treatment, no choosing the prettiest child in the orphanage. Just got a child referred to them who was of the age they wanted - which is understandable for the Jolie Pitts given that Pax fits neatly into the birth order. I believe Z is too young to be bothered by the fact she is no longer 2nd child. And Shi remains the baby of the family for a little longer.
The problem isn't giving the child a new name. the problem is in not acknowledging that this could result in some short term confusion and helping the child make the transition from orphanage to adoption. If you do acknowledge that the problems which might arise from this older adoption, and help the child transition, as I'm sure the Jolie Pitts will, then Pax will be OK. Let's put it this way, if Brad and Angelina hadn't given the child a new name, one day Pax might also feel like the odd one out. My daughter, who is 5.5 y/o, and has a chinese name feels odd that she doesn't have a western sounding name because we live in a caucasian community where all her friends have western names. She noticed the difference from the time she was 4 y/o.

Skinny fat, why is it strange for Angelina not to receive any media coverage about the boy when they put in the application to adopt. at that stage, it would be most unwise to advertise the fact that they have done so when the adoption might not come through.
What I've found interesting is the amount of information which is being revealed the vietnamese authorities, including scans of pax's passport, Angelina's passport, the adoption papers etc etc.. Surely you aren;t suggesting that Angelina revealed the scans herself?? Must say, the vietnamese authorities have been about as leaky as a sieve. Mores the pity for the Jolie Pitts.
Still I suppose, the media will be snap happy about the new child for a while - especially the new child with all his new sibilings.
I'm now waiting for comments from bigots about how come Angelina and Brad are letting the paps photograph Pax before a 9 month moratorium, whilst having kept Shi hidden for longer then 9 months. The bigots will then say that
(a) Brad and Angelina protected shi more because they feel more love for Shi - but wait,
(b) that cannot be because Angelina agreed that shi was a bit of a blob earlier on and so it must be because they feel less love for shi so couldn't be bothered to take her out, but wait,
(c) if Angelina didn't care of shi, she would have just taken her daughter out because after all, she wouldn't care about intrusive flash lights and shouting paps, but wait,
(d) if Angelina cares enough about shi, then why doesn't she care enough about pax, poor little boy who is not accustomed to American life being hounded by the paps, so may be
(e) she doesn't care for her adopted child but cares more for her biological child, but no, that cannot be because,
(f) Angelina agreed that Shi was a blob and she felt more for Maddox and Z and presumably Pax, but wait,
(g) Angelina allows photos of pax because she is media w*** and she is just using her children which is why we always see photos of her adopted children sooner then we see photos of shi;

Luckily, I'm perverse enough to find this sort of stupidity and bigotry entertaining, especially when Brad and Angelina prove these nay sayers wrong, over and over and over again.

46My sister in law adopted a three year old, from the US with an American sounding name, and they changed it. The health care workers told them that it would be good for him. So I think it's probably common.
