Sandra and Meryl Prove the "Over 40" "Old Gals" Still Have It

Jan 5 2014 - 9:46am

Women were in the spotlight last night at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala, where Sandra Bullock [1], Julia Roberts [2], Meryl Streep [3], and 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o all earned honors. Sandra gave one of the evening's most memorable speeches, explaining that she Googled herself while trying to craft her address, cobbling it together based on what online commenters had to say about her: “From this not particularly talented, mediocre, over-40 woman, I’m so grateful and so appreciative.” Meryl, who was the night's last honoree, was similarly self-deprecating, but used her time in the spotlight to remind the crowd that her career is proof you "can't put those old gals out to pasture. We've got a lot to say."

The women didn't get to have all the fun, however: Tom Hanks [4] and Matthew McConaughey [5] were among the men who racked up awards at the show. Matthew, who wore a bold Saint Laurent jacket to the event and had wife Camila Alves by his side, gave a heartfelt speech about his work on Dallas Buyers Club. The actor thanked his family for supporting him as he prepped for and shot the film, saying he knew he "wasn't easy to live with" at the time. He also joked about the difficulties they faced getting the movie off the ground and the significant weight loss he and Jared Leto [6] went through for their roles: "We didn't have enough money. We didn't have enough time; we shot it in 28 days. We did have enough food on set; we couldn't eat it."

The mood at the gala was lighthearted. Amy Adams [7] stayed close to fiancé Darren Le Gallo's side, while Lupita hung out with her little brother, whom she brought as her date for the evening. When we caught up with her on the red carpet, she explained that he can't join her at the Golden Globes because he has school. Stay tuned for even more from last night's gala, including full acceptance speeches and our red carpet interviews.
