Penn Badgley spends his fair share of time with starlets on Gossip Girl, but he recently spoke out on the weight issue of the 90210 girls, telling PopEater, "I hope they eat a double cheeseburger or something." The stick-thin stars have been a hot topic of conversation since the show started airing, and most of you agree that teen shows are setting a bad example, but tell us — do you think Penn's comment was out of line?

Nope. I've never had any interest in 90210 so I don't really care I guess. Penn is gorgeous, he can do no wrong.
1well i look at this way: if they have some type of mental eating disorder or anorexic problems..then maybe/yes..since its a psychological thing
but if the girls are doing it out of vanity, then no he wasnt out of line
kinda complicated
2I've seen the show a couple times and its true, the girls on that show are ridiculously thin. I agree with Penn 100%. At least the girls on Gossip Girl have some curves, just like most of us!
3I don't think it's right for anyone to say anything negative about another person's weight, whether it be about overweight people or underweight. I've always been naturally thin, never weighed over 115 lbs and I've always been insecure about it. I've known hundreds of overweight people but I've never commented on it to them. Yet they didn't have a problem commenting on me being underweight. They said it to me in a negative way, a condescending way.. but because society wants to gang up on the "thin people" because they're the ones put in magazines or on runways, then they felt like it was justified. Though last time I checked, my feelings counted just as much as theirs'. It's just ignorant. Some people are just naturally thin, you should never assume they have an eating disorder nor should you even mention that because it's a serious issue. Sorry, this topic bothers me and I had to let loose.
4Its hard to say, it depends
5i do think that it's a bit out of line - there's too much of a commotion being made about those girls - and it's just insane. i thought that i saw something in OK! about comparing the original actresses with the new ones and how tiny the new ones are. we have to remember that these actresses look like they could ACTUALLY be in high school. as for comparing them to GG - um...whatever!
6P.S. I'm not saying he was out of line, I'm just saying in general. I actually voted MAYBE. Just think about it this way. Telling someone to go eat something is ok but if someone dared to say starve yourself to an overweight person, it'd be considered rude and etc... right? I don't know..I've dealt with the comments all my life.. just isn't right.
7
immadiva..its ok to vent..
8i think it's out of line too. it's not that he's wrong... of course these girls are looking too thin, but if they have some psychological and emotional problems that are contributing to their weight loss, then i think it shouldn't be spoken negatively about like that. it's a serious issue and should be treated as a disease, or a disorder.
9that jessica girl who plays silver looked normal a year ago from prom night (i think) before she started the show.
if she comes out and say "i'm naturally thin" i say bs b/c there's a picture of her before she got all thin. i hate it when people force others to be thin and think it's beautiful. get healthy and be beautiful, you have more nutrients when your sick is glowing. not when your skin is showing your bones!
10One of the girls is 90 pounds and 5'4, another is 105 and 5'7. That is UNHEALTHY thin. Was the comment out of line? I don't know that it was or wasn't, but it WAS in fact accurate.
11i didn't think it was out of line-- a) he was definitely just joking.. and b) society does put overweight women in the spotlight and makes them feel bad about their size, maybe we should be doing the same to underweight girls and we wouldn't have the problem...
also, in US weekly they do a comparison of the original 90210 series' women to the new one-- it's pretty shocking, all girls my height (5'2") are about 10-20lbs lighter than i am, and i'm considered average weight for my height. just some food for thought!- pun intended
12imma i agree with you mostly on the thin people comments. i'm naturally thin and have even got the comments from time to time about how i need to eat. but anyone who really knows me knows i eat a ton. however these girls just don't look healthy or naturally thin- they look starved to death. and while his comment wasn't probably the best way to go about it- the truth still stands that they look way too thin and everyone can see it.
13after re-reading my comment, i just wanted to clarify-- no, i don't think it's okay to "make fun" of underweight girls, nor do i think that will solve weight issues.. i just mean that maybe if it wasn't "cool" to be sooooo super skinny, there wouldn't be so many girls with eating disorders
14way to take one unoriginal comment that was probably made in passing and make a big deal out of it.
15I think it's rude to comment on anybody's weight unless you're their doctor, personally.
16I don't think it was out of line. I'd consider it so if those girls were naturally that thin and had trouble gaining weight, but they are both noticeably much thinner than they've been in previous projects.
17Maybe he should have a lot at on-screen sister, Taylor Momsen!
18look*
19I can't decide whether or not making public statement like Penn Badgley's was out of line. However I do agree that a few of the girls on the show appear unhealthy. I am naturally thin, but there is a line between thin and unhealthy and at least one, if not two of these actresses have crossed the line. Perhaps the publicity will be a bit of a wake up call.
20...from the mouth of a man who sells soft porn to teenagers...
21I care what he has to say regarding someone else..ahhhhhhhhhh...
NO.
What if he went to the Ugly Betty set, and afterwards commented that America Ferrara needs to cut back on the double cheeseburgers?
(Note: Don't kill me! I don't think that at all! I'm just making a point that it is rude to comment on others' weight like that.)
22I like the new 90210 but those girls are painful to watch.
23Jude-
24I wish he'd say that to Monique or Nikki Blonsky...
bye bye big mouth! LOL
''we have to remember that these actresses look like they could ACTUALLY be in high school. as for comparing them to GG - um...whatever!''
But being in HS doesn't equal being thin. At their age I was fully developed. I was not overweight, I wasn't underweight either. I don't remember seeing lots of girl at this age being as thin as these girls from 90210.
25Being underweight or thin as a teenager is not a norm. There were all kind of body sizes.
I don't mean that being thin as teenager is not normal. I just mean that it's one body sizes among others we can have. Their role as highschoolers should not be an excuse for the actresses sizes.
26I think he just meant it in passing. People make the biggest deal about celebrity comments! Geez, Who hasn't said they should start a food fund for Calista Flockhart or Lara Flynn Boyle.
27People say these things all the time. Being slim or thin is fine. But when you're in the public eye as these girls and they try to portray a life of wealth and drama. Little girls or teenage girls look up to them and think well if i looked like them (or even acted like them) maybe my life would be glamorous. Or I'd be famous or some nonsense. Goes back to, maybe parents should keep a closer eye on what the kids watch. If these shows didn't get the ratings they would probably try to change the image as well.
In high school I looked like a candy apple and everyone always said...oh, you're so thin, I wish I was thin....the guys wrote all in my yearbook how 'sexy' I was... I was 110lbs. at 5'6" ate one meal a day, and was exhausted ALL the time.
28I realized they were media blinded and ignorant and got healthy real quick before I had my first child. I wish they would link the risks of having poor nutrition to motherhood more often, it affects the babies...if they even survive the first trimester.
Both girls were much meatier months ago. Obviously, they have eating disorders. I think it's up to the producers to demand they gain weight. They are setting a bad example for young girls.
29I think it is very cool that he said something about it. His girlfriend on the show and in real life, Blake, is absolutely adorably stunning and is curvy and not a stick figure. That is sexy. I was skin and bones in high school and college. I couldn't gain weight until after I had my daughter and I hated my body then. Obviously now I can't eat anything I want like I used to, but I love myself so much more now. Some people are naturally thin, but these girls weren't this thin a couple months ago. Now they are mildly skeletal. Anyone who thinks that is attractive really needs to think about what a horrible example that is setting for our daughters. My daughter is 11 and she told me the other day that one of her friends likes this boy but his girlfriend (??) is really skinny so she doesn't stand a chance with him. I had a serious discussion with my kid about body issues and girls should look like girls, not young boys. Sick world.
30no it wasnt out of line, loads of people say that fat people need to get to a gym or smthing why not tell people 0 sized people to eat a chip of smthing...
31Penn is right.
I'm sick of people defending "naturally thin, petite girls" - in case when dramatic weight loss is obvious. This is not healthy at all and being comment sensitive is just stupid - some things have to by called right before clueless teens adopt another "natural skinny" girls as role models.
Look at Nicole Richie circa 2003-2005

32''we have to remember that these actresses look like they could ACTUALLY be in high school. as for comparing them to GG - um...whatever!''
ummm these girls are the same age as the original 90210ers. Jessica is older!
33I would have said it, too.
34I don't think it was out of line and i do think it's a very serious issue with hollywood and thos egirls being so skinny. The first time I saw that show the only thing I was thinking was OMG those girls are really skinny. especially the character name annie. I am a thin person myself but I look healthy. i'm 5'7 and i weight 114. I have so much fat on my face and stomach. i eat a lot I just don't gain any weight. but those girls look like they are starving themselves for the show.
35No way! Blair and Serena have such hot bods I'm not surprised.
36I think it's just rude to comment on somebody's body like that.
37And I completely agree with Jude C, if he was commenting on someone being overweight everybody here would be crucifying him.
LolaSvelt, I was going to same the exact same thing! He forgets that Taylor Momsen is only like 15 and looks like a wind could carry her away from New York to LA. He also said in that same conversation that he was glad the girls on his show weren't "bone-thin." Uhh...
38Also, in response to his commenting on people's physical features, I hope he gets braces or something.
39lol i can't stand p.funk.
40say** (for comment 38)
41In general I think the 90210 girls are not healthy thin...they are definately starved looking. Just skin and bones..its kind of scary...I have seen pics of the girls before and I agree with the others...they were thin before..but not painful thin.
He probably could have said it more tactfully...but I agree with his statement.
42I don't think he's out of line. whatever.
The girls on the show are tiny, and look unhealthily thin.
I just saw Jessica Stroup (who I love) in the premiere of True Blood, which was filmed like, a year or more ago...and she actually had meat on her bones. I had to make sure it was her.
As for Shenae Grimes, she's always been thin, but she's taken it a bit extreme.
As for you guys talking about Taylor Momsen, sure, she's thin,
43but she's also 15, and she really doesn't look unhealthy.
The girls on 90210 are almost all in their 20s (with the exception of Shenae Grimes, who is almost 19), they're women, but you wouldn't know by looking at them.
No way, he's right. Even though I don't even watch 90210...
44I don't think you should make derogatory remarks about another persons weight whether they are overweight or underweight. But I don't think he was really 'speaking out' about their weight, it wasn't that bad a thing to say.
45I dont think so. I say that about girls that are too skinny all the time "someone give that girl a quarterpounder!" meh...maybe Im being out of line too...but whatever. SOMEONE needs to show REAL girls that its ok to be natural and to love your body the way it is. And that protruding bones are NOT sexy! And I think alot of young girls probably see Penn as a heartthrobe, so to hear him say that these girls are way too skinny, might mean something to them. Just my opinion.
46I see both sides of this argument and can't pick just one.
I think that people shouldn't comment on other people's weight especially when they don't know them. No one knows what these girls are going through and why they are so thin.
But, I also recognize that there are issues with these girls being so thin. Maybe a little bit of attention will show them that they could stand to gain a few pounds for their health.
47But the girl who plays Annie is extremely skinny and so is Silver. I refuse to believe that the girls are all healthy when the girl who plays Naomi is the heaviest one. At least Blake Lively and Leighton Meester don't look like they are one breeze away from tipping over
48those girls scare me on that show.
I think it is great for a young attractive man to speak out and say that is not appealling. I think young girls today need that assurance.
49no. i just read an article about their weights, and it made me feel bad about myself, until i realized i'm the one with a normal weight, and they aren't...
