I don't get the smoking with Teens. It must be an LA or New York thing because My daughter who is a senior in high school doesn't smoke nor do any of her friends and she is in the "in" crowd. She says that smoking is looked upon poorly and the kids who do it are considered the losers at school.

We live in a very upscale neighborhood and our school district just ranked #7 nationally out of the best school districts in the country, but even when we lived in "The Woodlands" Texas, when my daughter was a sophomore, she said it was the same way, that none of the popular people smoked because it was just a stupid and weak thing to do. It amazes me the number of young people that obviously don't heed the warnings and smoke in Hollywood.

I worked at the Hospital right off of 45 and the only ones who smoked were nurses who were aged 30 or over. Most of the younger people were into being healthy. The very few I knew that smoked and were in their 20's had moved there and picked up there habit somewhere else. I know in the deep South smoking is widespread. You're talking to a person who's family has made a living and grows tobacco in South Carolina on about 2,000 acres for over 40 yrs, so I know all about smoking, and I know that most teens in the good areas of the country DO NOT smoke. It's not considered "cool" anymore. It just surprises me that these well off young people in California and New York smoke, when the teens in other well off places USUALLY do not.

NO WAY are most of the people in The Woodlands social smokers. I would TOTALLY disagree with you on that one. In my line of work and living there for over 5 yrs, I knew a lot of people and only a handful of them smoked.

no offense Islander, but could you possibly know every person in your town? if someone wants to smoke, they find friends that smoke. your daughter doesnt want to smoke, so she found friends that dont want to. i personally find it disgusting and tend to cough as loud as possible when I walk past someone trashing their lungs in public. i think this girl just wants to obviously separate her tv life and her real life.

In a survey dated June 16th 2006 stated that only 8 percent of teens smoked, in Canada. That's not America I know, but it's something we should wonder what they are doing that we aren't.

In the American Indian population almost 92% of the teens smoke. It is high in the southern states also. The rate is high among the teens who do not plan to go to college. Students who do plan on attending college, the rate drops dramatically.

My whole question is, why is it that it seems to be based on income and intelligence in other parts of the country, and then you have these teens in Hollywood who are rich and have had adequate education still smoking when elsewhere it does not seem to be the trend?

I don't know everyone in my town, but my daughter was one of the more popular girls at The Woodlands "College Park" high school and she had many many friends. She didn't have any that smoked. She was in a high school of about 4,000 and you knew who did and didn't smoke. YES there were some that smoked, but liked I said earlier they were considered the losers...none of the popular kids smoked. By popular, I mean, the athletes, the kids in the gifted programs, the musically talented kids. The boy Will Makar who was on American Idol in 2006 was one of her close friends..he didn't smoke.

I'm just saying (again) the kids who had more material wise, did not smoke, but why is that the kids in Hollywood who have A LOT more like Lindsey, Shia, Britney, so on and so on smoke? Just wondering if there is even an answer to that. I know that no one I knew smoked...I didn't have any neighbors that I saw smoking. If you saw someone smoking it was a rare thing. It maybe hard to believe but it was the truth. In the Woodlands anyway.....back in my hometown in South Carolina, it was hard to find someone that DIDN'T smoke.

What state may i ask. I'm in Lee's Summit MO now and it's the same in my daughter's high school, the pop kids do not smoke. There are kids who do, but they aren't the ones who are going places.

Islander...you don't get why the hollywood starlets smoke? To stay skinny! Its been known for years that's while models do too. Smoking represses your appetite..and not to mention I am sure some of them every time they get hungry they just pop a ciggie in.

Islander makes a good point. I think part of the reason is the cultural difference. I grew up wealthy in Buenos Aires Argentina where ALL the teens smoke. I think it has to do with image : city kids are into rock & roll, art and film, and have an edgier style. Suburb kids listen to hip hop and top 40 charts, and they tend to dress "Cuter" and go for a clean cut look. Of course, cigarettes help city kids define their images, and they would hurt suburban kids who are into football games and pastel colored polos.

I agree with you Islander71. I'm not from America but in highschool is was considered trashy to smoke cigarettes and if someone lit up at a party people would tell them how gross it was. Though, it was a different story at the public school parties were a lot of people would sit outside and socially smoke.

Smoking seems to be a cultural thing for those from a lower socioeconomic background. I think a lot of teens in Hollywood smoke because they want to keep thin and it's probably a cultural thing there to. There is a lot of smoking at Hollywood events so it becomes more socially acceptable to the people that move there. You also have to remember that whilst Hollywood actors have a lot of money now they came from all different types of backgrounds and may have been raised in an environment where smoking was commonplace.

She's been smoking since she was 16 at least. Miriam McDonald tried to help her quit for a while but it obviously never took. Terrible habit.

we don't know what their eating habits are. we only know what we're being told second hard from the magazines...and i think that it's not fair to speculate. i hope that they are healthy but you can never tell in hollywood.

shanae is definitely getting more attention than she did when she was on degrassi and i wonder how her old castmates feel about her now and her fame. i'm sure that some of them are a bit jealous since they never broke through to the US scene like she did...

I'm judging her for smoking - I think she's an idiot for it. Just like I think Katherine Heigl is an idiot for smoking, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Moss, Lindsay, Britney, etc etc etc. All of them, idiots for smoking.
Even if smoking didn't lead to cancer, why would you want your hands stained yellow with nicotine, fine lines around your mouth from puckering up to suck in as much as possible, revolting stinking cigarette breath, the stigma now attached with smoking, not to mention the cost of a packet of cigarettes? I don't know about the rest of the world, but a packet in Australia is roughly $13. I know I've got better things to do than spend my money on the old cancer sticks.

And another thing (while I'm on this rampage, lol): emphysema. You just need to listen to someone with it and that should be enough to make you never want to smoke a cigarette. My grandfather has it pretty bad and every time he coughs, we all hold our breath, wondering how he's ever going to catch his again.
Then I think of Christy Turlington, one of the world's most beautiful women who has emphysema. Imaging her, with a horrible hacking cough? That's gotta be enough to make you not want to smoke.

Wow. The majority of people smoke where I live. I'm one of the only people I know that doesn't. And I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't think most kids smoke to look cool. I think stress relief has a lot to do with it.
