This news devastates me.

I just found out about Vonnegut this morning and i must say that makes me sad. He's one of my favorite authors, writing some of my favorite books of all time. I think I'm going out to buy a book of his and read it while I'm traveling on the plane today in his honor. He's up in Heaven now. So it goes. (that was for you KV)

He needs to stay in jail because he's a glorified pervert, and sexual predator. If he didn't hang with schlebs and celebtards he would have been languishing in jail a long time ago. And it's a damn good thing Don Imus got fired, Isiah Washington should go next.

As I was reading about Kurt Vonnegut I heard them announce it on the radio. How devistating.

I agree with you skinny fat. Has anyone ever heard Howard Stern speak? I remember when he was on the radio and would say horrible things all the time. Now a good charity is getting hurt. I don't agree with racism and prejudice but what about free speech? I guess it doesn't exist anymore. Soon we won't be able to go on blogs, etc. And it doesn't even matter that he apologized. This is way out of hand.

Imus is a cantankerous old coot but he isn't a racist. He's being railroaded and it's wrong wrong wrong. Those young women on the team wouldn't have even known he'd said anything if Al Sharpton didn't make a mountain out of a molehill. Don't even get me started on "Reverend" Al Sharpton. He's just wherever there is publicity. Always has been, always will be.

Why shouldn't the Imus radiothon go on? In fact the ONLY reason the suspension wasn't effective immediately was because of the radiothon - a decision made by CBS, not Imus. He was prepared to take his suspension immediately. He has apologized. He has said that there is no excuse for his behavior. He is not one of these phony-ass celebrities who is going to go hide in rehab. Instead, he's taken his lumps and today is raising money for children with cancer, children with blood disorders (particularly sickle cell anemia which disproprotionately affects the African American community), SIDS and other childhood diseases. What an awful person.

Where's Reverend Al's telethon? Oh that's right. He's a selfish race-baiting prick who cares only about himself.

Imus' radiothon is still going on but he could raise more money if his show had aired on MSNBC. Imus is not a phony ass celeb and isn't going to check into some ridiculous form of "rehab" or go on the talk show circuit apologizing over and over again. It's gotten out of control.

The 18th annual Radiothon began Thursday and runs through Friday. It was one of the reasons the start of his suspension from CBS was delayed.

Tony Gonzalez, supervisor of the Radiothon phone bank, said volunteers were getting about 200 more pledges per hour than they did last year, and most callers were expressing support for Imus.

By midday, $967,793 had been pledged, according to a display board at the Hard Rock Cafe, where the Radiothon was moved Thursday morning. Last year's Radiothon raised a total of $2.9 million for three charities — Tomorrows Children's Fund, CJ Foundation for SIDS and the Imus Ranch.

i think calling what imus said "free speech" is kind of belittling what the first amendment truly is. there was absolutely no reason for him to say what he said, it was despicable, wrong and msnbc and cbs have every right to pull him off the air. that being said, imus has called the president a cold blooded murderer, why arent people up in arms about that? the fact is that people say and do stupid things every day and people get offended every day, no amount of protests and lawsuits will ever change that. once this country stops its whining about "being offended" will we then be able to practice true free speech.

I was in tears last night when I found out about Mr Vonnegut. I've enjoyed his writing since I was little but he's been my humanist (atheist) mentor for many years and he will be sorely missed for his compassion for all people.

I am so sick of the double standards in America. Why is more tolerable to call white people "crackers", then it is for someone to say "nappy headed"? Watch a Chris Rock special and you will know what I mean. Yes, comedy is comedy, but words are still words, in ANY case they can be offensive.
Yes, what he said was totally ignorant and racist, but this is not the first ignorant comment to come out of a person's mouth in public. I catch myself saying stupid things, even about people of my own ethniticity.
I have never been an Imus fan, but he raises millions of dollars for children, he has been a useful person in society, moreso then some odf these so called civil rights leaders that raise mobney for their own personal gain. If MLK were alive, he would want this handled differently, Im sure . Its all about awareness, it should notr be about punishment.

There is a definite double standard in the industry eg Isiah Washington and Don should have known that making a comment like that when Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are around is like shooting yourself in the face. They are publicity hungry and he played right into their hands. That being said you could be Mother Theresa but once you show racist, xenophobic or homophobic tendencies, I think you need to be taught a lesson.

maeve, thanks for the link. We lost our daughter to SIDS, and her 7th birthday should have been this Sunday. I've already made a donation in her name this month, but I will donate again. SIDS is definitely something that needs researched to help prevent it from happening to other families. It's not as simple as putting a baby to sleep on their back unfortunately.

But does Chris Rock call specific people crackers, or just a general comment not directed at anyone specific?

Stuff gets said but i did a live radio course and i remember the first thing we were told was to watch our step and if we cursed on air that would mean immediate dismissal.Chris insults everyone in his shows from black to hispanics to white people, everyone is included, he doesn't target a specific race for 3 hours straight but whatever, Al and Jesse are awful people and I wish someone would take them to task for what they've done especially Al.

This is America and we have freedom of speech - EVERYONE is allowed to say whatever ignorant or racist thing he or she wants. By the way, there are two childrens books titled "Happy to be Nappy" and "Nappy Hair" and one for adults titled "Nappyisms: Affirmations for Nappy-Headed People and Wannabes!" canthelpwatching, just so everyone knows Imus was just being Imus. He also called his wife a "green" ho because of the work she does with eliminating toxic ingredients from cleaning products. There is a black radio city here in NYC that uses the terms b*tches and ho's ALL the time and no one's firing them.

yes i am quite aware of free speech which is why he is not being arrested. the 1st amendment only applies to law not business. if advertisers drop out because of him cbs has every right to fire him. imus got fired because he said something stupid, he knew that one of the cbs board members used to be the president of the naacp. he knew that advertisers could drop him.if his charity suffers, its his own fault. free speech is a lovely thing but one must accept the consequences of it when they choose use it without caution.
