Last night the legendary screen actor and philanthropist passed away at the age of 83. Paul was surrounded by friends and family when he passed at his home in Westport, CT, after battling cancer. Few details were released by his publicist just as his illness was kept under the radar since suspicions rose earlier this year. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, actress Joanne Woodward, and their five daughters and grandchildren.
Paul was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and directed and starred in films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Road to Perdition. Paul won his first Oscar with The Color of Money as well as two additional honorary awards. He was one of the most charitable men in Hollywood with his food empire, Newman's Own, and as a co-founder of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for seriously ill children.
As well as one of the most giving, he was also arguably the coolest man in Hollywood, who raced cars and flashed those baby blue eyes. He remained married to his longtime sweetheart for over 50 years and stayed away from the Hollywood scene. He will be greatly missed.

3How sad! He was an all around class act. May he rest in peace.
4I watched Message In a Bottle just the other day!! He will truly be missed. My prayers are with his family.
5wow - this is the end of an era - i hope that his family and friends are doing ok with the news. i think that this comes to a shock to us all since we didn't really know the extent of his illness, but that was probably a good thing since he truly was loved by so many and if we all knew then there would have been more news about his illness rather than always thinking of him as the healthy virile actor/man that he was.
6A wonderful human, husband, father, philanthropist, you name it, Paul Newman was it. There will not be another like him. He will be missed greatly.
7An amazing human being, rest in peace.
8RIP
9Very sad.
10I did hear about his bad health a while ago. But now to hear he passed away, it's very shocking. My favourite actor, an awesome man all the way. Rest In Peace.

15I think I just freaked out my little one with my loud 'gasp' at this news. What a loss for his family and his fans. Truly a legend and not something we'll see any time soon from anyone else around. RIP. So sad
16Very sad. Hollywood has lost a legend. His memory will continue on as an example of the best of Hollywood.
17By far one of the classiest and generous men in hollywood, may he rest in peace. I loved him and his wife, what an amazingly beautiful couple, he was a gorgeous man, bless his big heart and soul. RIP Mr. Newman, you were definitely one in a million.
18I worked with him on many occasions for camp fundraisers and he was such a genuine, good person. He will be greatly missed and his family will be in my thoughts. It is definitely the end of an era.

21RIP Mr.Newman. Gorgeous man, with a generous heart. God Bless
22He was one of my favorite actors, definately a class act.
23R.I.P. Paul Newman. You will definitely be missed.
24I heard back in august that he had only weeks to live,so now it doesn't come as a shock. My thoughts goes to his family.
RIP.
And my I say, I found him as extremely handsome as he was talented. Such a treat watching him on screen.
25A true artist who acted because it was his chosen craft, unlike the fame wh*res of today who have zero talent, but crave the spotlight. He was a special person who will be sorely missed.
26What a beautiful man, he just got handsomer and handsomer.
27So very Sad, rest in peace Paul-your contribution to this world will be missed...
28Great actor, great husband, great person!!! We will never forget...
29First Charlton Heston and now Newman. So sad but R.I.P.Paul and God Bless. God bless his family too.
30He will be missed.
31RIP paul newman
32this is the year many great and talented people have passed, bernie mac was and still a shock to me
That's so sad! R.I.P Paul
33My thoughts are with his family & friends.
I was never a big fan of his acting but a huge fan of his generosity and big heart. His marriage to Joanne Woodward was one of the true Hollywood love stories and my favorite quote of his about straying was, "Why would I go out for hamburger when I have steak at home?"
34At least now he is reunited with his only son who died in 1978.....
Wow, talk about a real class act and star with tons of talent. He will definitely be missed.
35Rest in peace, Paul Newnam.
36A REAL ACTOR.
37I'll miss Mr Newman for his outspokenness and for his talent as an actor. Most of all of miss his humor and those beautiful dreamy blue eyes.
How I feel for his beautiful wife Joanne Woodward and surviving children. There were always just the best together.
38This is sad news but he has been rumored to have been ill for quite a while. May he rest in peace.
I have always contended that a 35 year-old Paul Newman is one of the sexiest beast on the planet for not only his looks, but his outstanding character as a man as well. What a person, he will be dearly missed by this fan.
39i loved him
40RIP, Paul
we will never forget you!
what a wonderful human being.. may he rest in peace
41The mold was definately broken when they made him. A truly great humanitarian and talent. God speed to you Mr. Newman and thank you for allowing us to share your life. You will be missed. My prayers are with his family at this sad time.
42So sad to see him go, but he left behind such an amazing legacy using his celebrity for charity, having a happy marriage lasting for what seems forever, and raising children who picked up his social concerns. My brother met him many times on the racing circuit, and had only the nicest things to say -- he was a quirky, funny, warm-hearted man with looks to kill and talent beyond. Love to his family and friends, we'll miss him very much.
43I'm so sad about this. He is definitely a classy act to follow, and all the little kiddies running around Hollywood now should stop and take note...THIS is what it is to be a star!
44Even though I knew he was ill, it makes me sad that he's gone. My heart goes out to his family.
45RIP. Really sad news. He will never grow old as his films are there for everyone to remember him for ever more. Plus I love his salad dressing, have some in my fridge.
46One of the biggest loss in movie history, he was a great man, a great actor, and his kindness went beyond what most people would do today. He will be greatly missed but always remembered.
47Class, all the way.
What a man. He was a humanitarian for its own sake, not for the sake of his image, or for the sake of profit. I hope he knew how much happiness he brought to people- both by his charitable acts and his amazing talent. I hope everyone's thoughts are with the beautiful Joanne Woodward today, and with their family and loved ones, and that they can be happy knowing he's at peace.
48So sad!
Paul Newman was one of the coolest/nicest/most generous people ever.
He will definitely be missed.
49Beautiful eyes, awesome actor. We'll miss you!
