First, we hear that Rose McGowan had an illicit love affair with her Grindhouse director Robert Rodriguez - then, the movie has a poor showing at the box office. Coincidence? Well, it's hard to know for sure, but we want to know - why do you think Grindhouse tanked?

I don't know that too many people knew what a grindhouse movie was before this came out, and it just didn't seem to have too much appeal. I usually enjoy Quentin Tarantino films, but this one held no appeal at all. Not much in the way of plot, lots of extremely gratuitous violence... don't get me wrong, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, those aren't Sunday School Picnic movies by any stretch. But the violence was part of a plot and it made sense.
Besides, one of the above choices also rings true. Who wants to see that kind of movie on Easter weekend? The films that did well were family oriented movies.
1i think it was also a little esoteric for today's moviegoers, as well as highly under-promoted. i know among rodriguez and tarantino fans (because i am one) it was a huge deal, but it should have been promoted to audiences beyond the hardcore fans.
2i haven't even heard of it..
3What the hell happened to Rose's face??
4Yea I think Easter weekend killed it. If you have time to see a movie Easter weekend, with all of your traveling, and chances are you are with family.
And raging sexuality and gore isn't something you wanna watch with mom, let alone little cousin Tommy.
5I have no idea, but I feel like I've been seeing Rose McGowan everywhere the last couple of months.
6I agree with krampalicious that it was underpromoted... and I also think that last weekend was the wrong time to release it.
7In the last couple of months Wild Hogs, Ghost Rider & Norbet have been the number one films. There is something extremely wrong with America!! There's tonnes of well-educated, intelligent witty Americans, and apparently they've all stopped going to the cinema!!
8did she tell everyone she had an affair or was it jus found out?
9I think it was the easter weekend thing- people are all bunnies and easter eggs, not a gal with a machine gun for a leg. Well, most people- I was all about it.
10I really don't think too many people care about the personal lives of Tarintino and Rodriguez. I doubt that is the case (Any one remember the rumor that Uma Thurman was sleeping with Tarintino?) I think this was about timing and no one gets it. I have been trying to find some people to go see it with me and they don't know what it is then I have to tell them and then some of them think it sounds kinda dumb.
11I think that all people heard about it was that it was a double feature. It was really long and people can't commit to a movie that long nowadays.
Also the word Grindhouse makes it sound like a house where people get ground up. When really it was a type of movie. Once they explained the background of a "grindhouse" movie I was all interested to see how they could pull it off.
Also I loved Robert Rodreguiz's film but Terentino's was really long and boring. All I can say to someone who goes is, stay for the first half but the second movie isn't good so do what you want there.
I don't blame easter weekend because who really treats Easter as a holiday anyways. Also the relationship between Rose and Robert, when doesn't that happen in a movie? Doesn't it usually help things? *shrugs*
I love Planet Terror and hope they make it into a movie by it's self!
12dont kno...but i still wanna see it
13I don't know the reasons, but shouldn't the first one read "Robert Rodriguez's alledged homewrecking?" I mean IF it did indeed happen, Rose wasn't there all by herself right?
14It was great fun... I hope it comes out of it's slump, but I do think that Easter weekend wasn't the best time to release it.
15the reason that grindhouse didn't do well in the box office is because it's a stupid movie. honestly, who has a machine gun in place of their leg???
16"Homewrecking?" Judgmental much? I agree with Edwina - an affair requires two people.
173 Words: 3 hours long.
18I haven't watched it - but it doesn't sound promising. Maybe it was the Rolling Stones article?
19I really liked both films but I really think that releasing it on Easter weekend was a bad choice, along with the fact that people today don't know, understand or get what a grindhouse film is all about. It's SUPPOSED to be over the top, bad acting, under-developed plot, etc. like a B movie. There isn't supposed to be a lengthy story line or intense character development.
20I don't think it tanked...I just think that most people can't really sit throught something that doesn't follow the true form of credits-beginning-middle-end-credits...and these two dudes made a finished piece that is far out there. Maybe it didn't need a total silverscreen debut. Maybe they should have been more guerilla about it, to sort of go along with the films.
also, you have to take into account that although it came in at number 4 opening weekend, slots 1-3 were taken by Blades of Glory, Meet The Robinsons and Are We Done Yet?, which I am sorry but they aren't exactly cinematic masterpieces.
Whatever, everyone has always been overly critical of Quentin's movies.
21yea i hate that its always seen as the woman as a homewreker and the man gets pat on the back, how is that fair
22We have two movie theaters where I live. One is new where all the good movies that are expected to do well play there; the other is older where all the opposite movies play. Grindhouse is playing at the older theater.
23Going to the movies is just no longer enjoyable. People talk loudly, kick the seats, cell phones ring, and other random bs. I would so much rather sit on my couch and watch movies on my big ole tv when I want to. Whoever said Easter isn't looked at like a holiday, I believe you are wrong.
24I think that it could be that people don't understand the Rodriguez/Tarantino teaming. Recently, the cinematic acclaim that producers, directors, and actors hope to achieve by doing "different" movies has been shot to heck with the genre of movies that I like to call "mindless." With mindless movies, you simply just sit there in the theater eating your snacks and just watching figures moving across the screen with no emotional investment or a care to invest in the plot or characters. This isn't that type of feature, and anything that isn't like the norm usually "tanks" because people can't sit there and think.
25i'm a huge tarantino and rodriguez fan. i loved planet terror. i felt that death proof dragged a little. if tarantino and rodriguez fans find it a significant commitment to go to the 3.25 hr double feature, what chance does it have w/the casual movie-going public? bruce willis is the only household face in the movie (w/all due respect to rosario, kurt, rico from 6'under, and rose). i predict that while the box office numbers may be low, grindhouse will do well w/dvd sales--an increasingly important aspect of movie releases.
26um...............cause it looked stupid and like it would be cruel and unusual punishment to sit through????????? maybe?
27Before it even came out I wondered about who decided to do release it Easter weekend. Those movies appeal to mostly young men/teenagers and they were not in school and/or where spending the time with their families.
28i think it was poor timing and bad promotion. its unfortunate that studios get antsy over a movie because of "content". this movie could of been very appealing to certain genres with the proper amount of buzz but nobody wanted to give it the time of day. we are a hop skip and a jump away from a chick flick nation
29why is it harder to believe keith richards didnt snort his father?
When I saw the mostly naked pictures of Rose McGowan and Rosario Dawson on Rolling Stone Mag (I think it was RS), I was completely disinterested. They were pushing the sex card too hard!
30Rose and Rodriguez are no Brangelina, so no stoning for Rose.
I think it was bad timing...like someone said...chocolates, bunnies, and flowers...vs. blood, sex and alcohol...with the family??? is a no brainer...another chocolate please!
31I think today audiences got the concept of "B" movies.
32The Grindhouse is a satire of "B" movies and a salute to them as well. There are alot of smart witty people out there, but they are not going to the movies.
P.S. Rose McGowan had a car accident that smashed her glasses against her face...I'm not sure if she's done with the reconstructive surgery...she said that when she was doing press for the movie.
33hey - why would it be just rose's fault? isn't he the one who cheated on his wife?
34i doubt it was the homewrecking. hardly anyone knew about it. it was underpromoted for one and tarnatino's appeal has been over for awhile now. his time was the 90's..
35I was going to go see this today. and forgot!
..If you see us in the club we'll be acting real nice
36if you see us on the floor you'll be watchin all night..
I don't want to see that much Gore on a Holiday weekend. You kiddin me??
37bad timing and underpromotion...at first i thought the 2 movies were separate..
38ha, I agree with SparklinSeahorSe, it looks like a stupid movie. that could explain why it tanked. lol
39It tanked because there is something totally wrong with Rose McGowans face! In the second pic, look at her expression, its like she's smiling on the outside but thinking, 'oh my gawsh, how much longer do I have to smile, it HURTS!'
I heard she was in a car accident, but she seems so botoxed out, her face distracts me too much, and its not in a good way
40I went and saw this movie on Opening Weekend and LOVED it!
41I thought it was entertaining and well played. I of course thought it was the perfect antidote to all the Easter BS (flowers, bunnies, candy egg hunts, ect.) that have been shoved down my throat since February!
For those of you who "dont get it", wait till it comes out on video and I'm sure you will change your tune. Its a cool alternative to the *ahem* "comidies" that have been showing up as of late. I found Planet Terror to be hilarious! And just as a side note, Rose's machine gun leg is part of the comedy of the whole thing, not to be taken so seriously...
I think it's the idea of having to sit 2 hours in a movie theater that doesn't appeal to people. But I bet when it comes out on DVD...there will be a cult load of fans wanting to buy it. I know I do.
42eww I just saw it. No woman would go by herself. I was dragged under dating circumstances with a guy I just started seeing. Otherwise-NO!
43Three hours in a movie theater seat.. not for me. I miss the good old days where movies were an hour and thirty minutes and not a huge time commitment. I also think the horror genre is oversaturated. Maybe "grindhouse" style movies just really aren't that relevant anymore-maybe we've all just seen too many exploitation/blood and guts movies.
44Planet Terror was awesome, but Death Proof was terrible. I'm seriously dissappointed in Tarrantino.
453 reasons- Rose is not a huge box office draw.
46It was pushed back due to this alledged affair af least 6 months. Nobody feels like sitting through a double feature. Plain and simple, that is why I did rush out. I will watch the DVD
He has lost his touch.
47It just came out at the wrong time...I mean, Easter weekend? I am going to see it on DVD though
48Couldn't have said it better, krampalicious. I'm still going to see it when its released here on may 31st. I hope they don't show it in two parts, that would suck.
49I don't think the affair could affect something that is REALLY good.
