As one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, Angelina definitely has the power to pick and choose the projects she feels most strongly about. Angie chose A Mighty Heart years after meeting and befriending Mariane Pearl, the movie's protagonist. In this month's issue of Glamour, Angie and Mariane talk about the movie, their friendship, and their deep admiration for each other. Here are highlights:
On how they met:
MARIANE PEARL: One day a few years ago, I was alone in New York with Adam, still having a rough time [after Danny’s death]. I read an interview with Angie in a magazine, about her and Maddox and her life as a single mom. And I thought, this woman could be my friend…. I’d never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was something in her tone, in the answers that she gave. I felt also that Maddox and Adam [then both about three] could be good friends. So I sent her a note saying, do you want to have a playdate? We cooked pasta; it was actually good. And then we started talking about changing the world…Angelina Jolie: …and about all the things we were passionate about. Her instincts were right—we did have so much in common. And all the kids are great friends now. Zahara is madly in love with Adam.

On playing Mariane in A Mighty Heart:
AJ: I was so nervous! I mean, it’s like you’re in a roomful of your closest friends and somebody says, “Why don’t you get up and imitate the friend to your left?” Nobody would want to do that, ever!…. Much more than how Mariane looks or acts, I wanted to express her essence. I’ve come to respect her so much as a hard-working person, a serious journalist, a great mom and an emotional, real woman, and I want the audience to connect with her the way I feel she deserves to be connected with. And that was hard, because I had to express the worst time in her life and [in the scene where Mariane is told of Danny’s death] the moment when she received the worst information of her life. It became the worst acting day of my life—and really, the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
Check out the entire Glamour article here. It doesn't surprise us that these two strong women were able to find a common bond on such a personal level. It sounds like Angie did really want to get this role right. We look forward to seeing if she did.

I must see the movie too, sounds VERY intriguing.
1Wow very interesting/sad
..If you see us in the club we'll be acting real nice
2if you see us on the floor you'll be watchin all night..
Daniel Pearl is always going to be remembered far more for the way he died than the way he lived. That's just the way it is and a movie isn't going to change that. Personally, I think it's way too soon to make a movie about this since we all watched the story unfold live on TV; just like September 11. The real images and stories are so fresh and raw that seeing reenactments seems unnecessary.

I love that they were friends before the movie got off the ground. They do seem like they'd get along very well together. Mariane wholeheartedly approved of AJ portraying her, so I think that will be a plus for the movie.
4Let the craziness begin...
I agree, Skinny, but I'd like to know what kind of man he was. Just me, tho.
5I will definitely go see this movie when it comes out.
6amazing, living and feeling passionate about the role is what makes her a great actresses
7I also need to play with Angie "CATCH THE FRIED CHICKEN"

This should be an interesting/sad movie. I think Angie will do a great job with it.
9This is a very neat story.
10
"catch the fried chicken" Do they get more points if they catch the food in their mouths?
11I read the article on thatotherblog and I'm interested to see how AJ portrays Mariane
12LOL @ Deba.. and I have to add one thing about her being a single mom.. LMAO.. everyone would be fine being a single mom if they had millions to fall back on...
13I can't wait to see this!
14Sashak, I think reading the book would probably help you know more about Daniel Pearl than the movie, IMHO. I'm of the opinion that with 24/7 cables news, it seems redundant to make a movie of an event, or any recent event, that received so much coverage. I find the movies about events that aren't heavily covered (e.g. Hotel Rwanda) more necessary. And I loathe the making money out of tragedy, but it is what it is. I'm sure Brad and Angelina handled the story with respect and tact.

And you can't change the world with a movie.

16Toto, I have a feeling we're not in America anymore
Angelina sure has changed from the days when she wore a vial of Billy Bob's blood around her neck. I love the story behind Angelina meeting Mariane Pearl for the first time--so genuine.
17oh I know. I don't really have a whole lot of time to read these days. I take what I can get. But maybe I'll pick it up. I have a few weeks before classes start again.
18I thought it was so cute that Zahara is madly in love with Adam.
Style Before Comfort!
19of course single motherhood is difficult with millions...i mean you have to pick out the nannies all by yourself! (what's the rolling eyes pic again?)
20Did you guys see pics from when Angelina was filming? She actually managed to look like Mariane!! They both seem like such intelligent women.
21I think for people who don't live in the US (or haven't read the book, for that matter) the movie will be enlightening since Daniel Pearl's story wasn't as covered in other parts of the world as it seems to have been in the US.
22You say you can't change the world with a movie...
I was forever changed when I saw Schindler's List for the first time. I read about war, studied it in school, but I never understood in any way what it was like, and the impact that the loss of one life could have. We have come to the point where we see news and it is, "78 people died in Iraq today, 22 less than yesterday so that is good...."
...but to appreciate how much each one of those lives was worth is pretty powerful. I think that making him a PERSON, and not just a headline is a good thing. Day in and day out of casualties seen as just numbers makes America numb.
23Ohilovemybabies & Sashak- I really love Angie but damn is she skinny! As Ohilovemybabies said some potatoes and corn bread cant hurt!

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the interview and watching the movie. I’m sure Angelina will do a great job and might get an Oscar nom out of it.
25Well said Jillness!
Some people sadly are just to negative and jaded...oh wait..."real"..
Love Angie, I hope they're happy with the final product.
26If you had done a "Guess who" on this I would have sworn AJ was talking with Minnie Driver-looks just like her!!
27It must feel like a real honor for Angelina to play Mariane.
28Wasn't Aniston set out to do this movie when Brad and her were a couple? I much prefer Jolie though in this part as she's a better actress and has a real friendship and understanding of Pearl.
29...Just wanted to add, Jolie seems to have a lot more in common with Pearl as they both seem very committed to world issues and humanitarian causes. Unlike Aniston. So I'm happy how things worked out.
30Sounds like a real good interview. I had no idea Angelina and Mariane were friends before. Some of the criticism Angelina gets is that she has no girl friends. Well, thanks Mariane for setting that nonsense out the door. They may not go tanning together, but "changing the world" is good enough.
31I hope this is as good as it's looking to be.
32I thought they met for the first time in 2005. People magazine said that it was Brad that set up the play date, because he wanted Ms. Pearl to meet Angie. They even have a picture of them together. That would coincide with the fact that they said they met when the boys were three. So they both need to stop acting as if it was a huge surprise that they met. Brad wanted Angie to get the part so he made sure she got it and he knew the public wpuld accept it more if Ms.Pearl gave her approval.
33wow..if that's true tmeeka...im definitely not seeing this shiz...
34Thanks Pop.
35tmeeka............is a link to that People article doable?
36Thanks Edwina for asking for that link as I'd like to see the link to that story in People as well. Lots of stories are circulated about Brad and Angelina almost daily and 99.9% are not true.
37this really isnt a "circulated story" this was actually written by marianne pearl. she has a column in glamour. its unfortunate that without the tragedy of danile pearl, we would not even know who marianne pearl is. she is such an amazing woman and has led an amazing life. her sense of purpose and sens of integrity stand out in everything she writes. i am excited to see this movie because i think its important for us to still be talking about 9/11 and daniel pearl and how our country has changed because of this. if we put away until its "appropriate" than that will only lead to apathy and we will be right back where we started, waking up to a television filled with the death and destruction of terrorism
38wouldnt it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere,so long to this life, so much fun pretending, cause bad luck's never endin
It sounds like they are good friends. Good on them. I have my reservation about that play date thing but hey they seem to get along.
39It sounds like they are good friends. Good on them. I have my reservation about that play date thing but hey they seem to get along.
40Never ever trust Brad Pitt I would say
tmeeka. We all know what happened before.
41That's all it takes? Asking Aj if she wants to have a play date, Well hell I can do that.
42Even if Brad did set up the play date (which I think may very well be true, couldn't find anything about it on People's website but it could have just been a blurb in their printed edition), it doesn't take away from the fact that Mariane seems to have felt a connection with Angelina when she read one of her interviews and that she genuinely wanted to meet her. I wish I knew someone who could hook me up with Angelina.
And I've read the whole interview, it's a good read alright. No one of them knew how to cook pasta when they first met.
43figurine i would be happy to meet aj too. I have several questions (same with most people) about how she came to be who she is. She's fascinating but I would never let aj near my boyfriend or my husband though, lol. She likes taken men. If they aren't taken she's not interested..
44Figurine, with all due, IMO it does take away from it because to say, "maybe it did happen that way" suggests that Marianne Pearl is telling a lie and using Glamour "her employer" to do it. Please don't let people who must always without fail assert something negative because they have issues about Angelina, Brad or both. The woman said what happened, and she has given me no reason to ponder another version, and until there is proof positive of another version, why even reduce the story to what others would like it to be, which is that of a false account. I'd like to think she has much more pressing issues in her life than spending time re-creating how she met her friend or when. JMHO
45EdwinaTheLovely: I was just keeping the options open. Now that I have actually pondered over this I do believe that Angelina and Mariane met in 2004 since it is stated in the interview that Maddox and Adam were both "about three" and that Angelina was a single mother and was not yet involved with Brad. So, there you have my updated opinion.
46figurine, I apologize if you feel I was insulting you in any way, or upbraiding you. I sincerely didn't mean that to happen or come off sounding that way. I still contend that some would like it to be not as MP stated, and choosing to agree with them without evidence to back it up led me to maybe sound not how I intended. Again, sorry.
47^^^ scratch "choosing to agree with them" since that is not what you did.
48Aww. It's a shame more celebrities can't be more like this.
49Crazy! Reading that gave me goosebumps.
