Ryan Reynolds stopped by The Rachel Ray Show today to talk about running the marathon for a cause so close to his heart. He didn't dish on Scarlett, but the newlywed looked fantastic and continued to charm with his personality. While on air, he was surprised by Michael J. Fox, who had some really sweet things to say about Ryan and some sage marriage advice to impart to his younger friend. Here are highlights:
- Michael's marriage advice for Ryan: "Just remember this, if a man says something in the forest and his wife isn't there to hear him — he's still wrong!"
- Michael on Ryan's support: "It means a lot and I'm humbled by you connecting your feelings for your father and your affection for him, and your desire to maybe make his life better and make life better for others in the situation. I'm humbled to even associate that with the work that we do."
- Ryan on the marathon: "I see this Team Fox banner up ahead, and I look to my left and there I saw Michael. My dad, for I think fairly obvious reasons, couldn't be there at the marathon. I would have loved him to be there, but Michael really was a kind of surrogate for that for me, and to just high-five him and have that moment really carried me through. I mean, I said that I gained 15 pounds in goosebumps alone, and I just off I went and finished strong."
It sounds like Ryan and Michael have a lot of mutual respect and admiration for each other as they continue to work toward a cure for Parkinson's.

I know I'm going to come off as completely cranky and humorless, but frankly, statements like "Just remember this, if a man says something in the forest and his wife isn't there to hear him — he's still wrong!" really annoy me. It's just this sort of sitcom-y, cheap wife-bashing humor, and I find it incredibly irritating.
1It's not wife-bashing it's stating a fact: even if a wife isn't there in person to hear something her husband said, to be sure someone will eventually get round to telling her. How's he bashing anyone by saying that?
And it isn't just isolated to wives it's true of anybody.
2That's not what he's saying, futonfighter. He's saying that wives always think their husbands are wrong.
3That husbands are automatically wrong even if their wife isn't there to tell them so.
4It is a shmaltzy joke but I don't find it disrespectful. Just cliche.
5And I ♥ MJF. Bless him.
I love MJF! I really miss him in Family Ties sometimes lol.
6I think the marriage advice is cute and I am not offended. I am not offended because I am what you would call "old-fashioned" and I do not believe that everything my husband says is wrong - just like my husband doesn't refer to me as "the old ball-and-chain." We have mutual respect for one another. I'm not exactly June Cleaver but I am more June than Peg Bundy.
Bug gender roles are different these days. My sister-in-law wears the pants in my brother's marriage.
7I agree with you Jude. Just because a man gets married doesn't make him an idiot. Men usually need to be right sometimes to maintain self respect. Why beat a man to a cowering little boy? How does that help you have a man in your life? That and I know some very ignorant married women.
Other than that, I sure like Michael.

9I agree with you too Jude. I love Michael J Fox and I know he was just trying to make a joke, but those cliches irritate me as well. Just as bad as when a man calls his wife/girlfriend my old lady. Yuck.

Just to clarify, it's not even that I'm offended per se. It's more that that kind of cliched "my wife is nuts" humor rubs me the wrong way.
15I LOVE MJF! I lost my Grandfather to Parkinsons years ago, and to see someone like Michael, battling this disease and STILL not feeling self pity, but being out there FIGHTING to find the cure, well, I think he could run over a puppy and I'd still adore him. (Okay, so he'd never run over a puppy, but you get my point.)
And Ryan, well, this is one cause that I can totally get behind. This is something that affects 1 in 10 families in the US, and even more globally.
If you haven't read the book "A Lucky Man" by Michael J. Fox, I highly recommend it. It will give you a new understanding of what people with Parkinsons go through. but I'm warning you, keep the tissues handy!
16This sounds silly, but I never realized how tall Ryan is. In all of the promo stuff for the race, he was towering over everyone. He's probably just over 6 ft, but in the land of Hollywood short guys, that's pretty tall.
I really admire their dedication to the cause. If only every worthy cause had people willing to get out and raise money and talk about it!
17I don't like that kind of humor either, Jude. My husband knows this and respects it, so he doesn't introduce me to people as "the old ball and chain" or anything like that, just "my wife"
No judgment on MJF for saying it, it's just not my thing.
18I love Ryan as an actor but he's lost stock with me now that he went and married Scarlette Jo. She seems like such a fame W-hore and air head. Can't stand her short, stubby, odd, little/big body either, yeah I know that's shallow, but we are all on a celeb gossip site so give me a break.

21i've ALWAYS loved ryan and i've always respected michael - so i think that it's wonderful that they are involved in the same cause and that they seem like they are getting closer. it sounds like they can learn a lot from one another!

Actually, I thought this was hilarious. Sometimes this is something my husband and I definitely relate to.
23I love Michael J. Fox and what he's doing to raise Parkinson's awareness. That's so great that Ryan ran in honor of his father. My dad has Parkinson's, so I know how terrible a disease it is, but he's such a fighter and stays so positive. I would run a marathon for my dad too!

I didn't really find a problem with MJF's quotes because I've heard a lot of men talk like that, as in "The wife is always right." I guess it really depends on the context of the situation, it could've been sarcastic or he could have just been making a joke. I don't think women are ALWAYS right, but it seems like most women are more practical than men.
25MistyMom, haven't you ever noticed that generally when guys break from a long, serious relationship they get heavily involved with the very next woman, i.e. either marry them or have kids with them? I always figure that that's their way of quantum 'learning' from it or dealing with the hurt it caused.
I think Ryan's getting broody, personally, but given that the relationship before was with Alanis Morisette and it was a long and involved one I'm not surprised he married Scar Jo.
I'm just assuming his involvement with her implies she has hidden depths. He gives her a benefit of the doubt card because I don't know much about her really.
