Beyonce Knowles isn't a teenager anymore, but that didn't stop her from sitting down with Seventeen to chat all about her whirlwind year, which includes her stop by the TRL finale tonight, as well as her upcoming double album. She opened up about her hush-hush wedding to Jay-Z, as well as her competition. Here's more:
- On finally settling down with Jay-Z: "I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started dating. There was no rush — no one expected me to run off and get married. I really don’t believe that you will love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do at 30. So that was my rule: Before the age of 25, I would never get married. I feel like you have to get to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time by yourself, and be proud of who you are before you can share that with someone else."
- On what she's learned from her husband: "I guess probably that we’re all human. I don’t care if you’re picture-perfect on every magazine cover, and you’re the most handsome, successful, coolest guy – you still get sad, and you still get your feelings hurt, and you still get confused and vulnerable and nervous and scared. You have to find a person you can make it through the tough times with."
- On competition with other artists: "I feel like I’m my competition. I don’t try to compete with other people. I just try to better myself. I go and watch everything that I’ve done. I have my YouTube days, when I watch every performance, and I listen to my music, and I watch my videos to figure out what I need to do, what I need to fix, and how to become a better singer."
It's rare to get a peek into her relationship with Jay-Z, especially about their vulnerability, but it's part of what keeps her human and able to be her own best motivation.

i guess there is no age limit for Seventeen?
1They put nearly 30 year-olds in my daughter's 'Poptastic' or whatever the heck they are called magazines
To include men who would go directly to jail if they ever dated the girls buying the mags LOL
I wish Beyonce and J. all the best. (but she should let that be it...anymore talking about it and she will never have peace)
2Good interview!
3nice.
4umm...whose thighs are those?? Cause they aren't Beyonce's!!!! LOL
5I read the average seventeen reader is actually 27 years old!
That said ... i kind of like her young looking blazer/skirt/tights combo
6I feel like I've heard that Jay-Z is abusive.
I thought the average Seventeen reader was more like 13? I stopped reading that magazine long before I turned 17. How many months of menstrual advice does a girl really need before it gets old?
7love the second pic she looks soo cute! And nice interview!
8Beyonce is a talented celebrity. Young women will want to hear from her, so I don't find it odd she is featured on the cover.
She looks really great and her SNL performance she looked really slim and toned.
9i wish the shirt inside hadn't been green...it just seems kind of random with the rest of the color coordination. I guess it's kind of a Seventeen thing lol.
...i prefer cosmogirl
10yeah It's b/c shes a celebrity that young girls look up to... and I think she's a pretty damn good role model considering the alternatives out there...
11I think she's wonderful. A really amazing role model for young women.
12i don't feel like there's an age limit to being on seventeen...unless you're like, sally field or something. she's someone the young girls look up to, and i like her young look (even though i do agree that those aren't her thighs lol Mesayme) it's also good to read her at least discussing her relationship--i just got done reading her interview in InStyle and she didn't say a thing about it.
13Exactly what I was thinking Mesayme! Beyonce is fit and all, but after seeing pictures of her at the beach in a bikini, I definitely agree that those are not her legs (well, maybe they are the half of her legs that haven't been airbrushed away!)
14They chose the most unflattering picture for the cover. Seventeen almost always does that.
15I love the second picture! Her outfit is adorable
16She seems like she has a good head on her shoulders when it comes to marriage. I really hope that she and Jay-Z are in it for the long haul. They seem good together.
17I know its wacky but... i love that outfit!!
18I don't know why they had to 'fix her'. There wasn't anything wrong.
Teenagers most of all need to learn self-acceptance. When will these mags learn?
19well i think that this is a nice perspective on her - so i'm glad that we get to see this type of interview with Beyonce. it's good to know that regardless of how much fame she has, she still has a real sense of self.
20I would actually prefer for my teenage daughter to look up to a woman with life and work experience and not another teenage girl like Miley Cyrus or Selina Gomez. Nothing wrong with those girls but teenagers leading teenagers is like the blind leading the blind. It is also a lot of pressure for the teenage stars too.
While Salley Fields may not be "hip" enough (though I like her) to inspire youth, Beyonce seems young enough to them to be cool.
21Beyonce's thighs are great...but those are not them. These mags have to quit with the photo shoppingg.
22i love the second pic!
23"Nothing wrong with those girls but teenagers leading teenagers is like the blind leading the blind. It is also a lot of pressure for the teenage stars too."
Very true, Jessie! And it doesn't work out too great for a lot of teen stars, apparently--apart from Jamie Lynn Spears, look at all the ones who show up in naughty pictures on the Internet.
24her thighs are photoshopped
25I totally agree about the thighs. Saw her on SNL the other night.
26
27She is a good role model for kids,, there are a lot worse!!! good one...
28great interview, shes beginning to let her personality show more which is great. One thing that I didnt like about her was her robot answers.
29Awww I think she is a cutie
30She is wise - I like what she had to say
ABSOLUTELY keep her on Seventeen covers- I'd want my future daughter reading about the importance of getting to know herself prior to marriage, as opposed to reading about Megan Fox and how hot she thinks she is.
31ok that outfit is horrible but she looks really good. prob cause they kept her hair and makeup simple since it is 17 mag. but she looks the best i've seen her in a while actually
32I can't stand this woman in any way, but I have to give her props for her statement about knowing yourself and not marrying before 25. I think if more people would follow that, we wouldn't have the high divorce rate in the US that we have right now.
I now have to go beat my head against a wall for liking something that she did.
Oh wait, her SNL performance was HORRID this weekend! Now I feel better.
33Those are definitely some interesting snippets, and I'm glad she's not being so snobby and secretive about her life. Beyonce is definitely one of my girls at the end of it all, and I will always support her.
34Even though I don't care for the first two singles, I'm definitely buying the album this Tuesday!
she gives teenagers something to think about. dont rush into marriage is a great message and although not going to work for everyone she represents someone they will listen to. shame about another photo digitally altered. it kinda takes away from the positives in the interview. girls need to see some real thighs!!
35ha! yeah, whose thighs are those?! anyway, kudos to b for still keeping her private life fairly private
36I want the rare jacket-the one on page 60-where can i get it
