In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Prince supposedly opened up about how religion and the Bible have changed his outlook on certain political and social issues. When asked more specifically about gay marriage and abortion, he said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’" Obviously those are strong words that lots of people will have passionate opinions about. So tell us — are you surprised by Prince's comments?

As a man who dresses and talks like a woman and who changed their name to a friggin symbol, he doesn't really have a lot of room to talk about people's personal, private decisions.
1When did GOD come? I missed his visit.
2Anyone shocked, doesn't know Prince.
3WTF? It really doesn't make sense, but that Prince for ya. I love his music anyway.
P.S. He's a Jehovah's Witness, right?
4I agree with LaurenG22.. he, of all people, should know how it feels to have people who don't even know you invade on your personal decisions..but to each, his own I guess..
5Yes california. He converted a few years back.
6Does it surprise me? No. Very few things surprise me. Do I agree with him? Absolutely not. Apparently I was in the same place as Rosa when God visited.
Um, in what part of his statement did he even talk about gay marriage or abortion? What he said doesn't even approach the subjects.
7While I don't agree with his opinion, IT IS HIS and he is ENTITLED to it. Freedom of speech, right? You can't beat on a person for having an opinion that's different from your own. If they didn't want to know, they shouldn't have asked.
8Freedom of Speech is what America is good for. I'm kinda glad when people have a strong opinion, and aren't too afraid of being non-PC to say somethin. Yeah, it'll offend people. But aren't we offended by things all the time -- in mags, commercials, talk radio, etc. We can be big boys and girls and accept that people can have different points of view. Are we gonna tell people not to say certain things? No.
9he was asked about it and that was his response. You dont have to use the words when its a direct question.
10well everyone has the right to believe what they want I don't think she should be scrutinized by his beliefs
11i agree with the past 4 comments! this is America and he has a right to his opinion and like others said, I'm glad he speaks what he really feels instead of censopring it to please the public.
12UPDATE!
Contrary to what a recent interview with the New Yorker is reporting, a source close to the rocker tells us that Prince was grossly misquoted and misinterpreted as not down with gay rights.
Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had. Like Prince is really made of bones or something and not nebulous gold glitter - come on!
What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment.
That sounds better, considering he's a man who caused his own Controversy!
"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.
No tape recorder? How unprofessional!
13Thanks for the update Brian. And seriously, no tape recorder?
14I admire him for sticking to his values and his beliefs.
15No problem- and just so I dont get in trouble or whatever-
That was copied directly from p.hil
16Never ever surprised by Prince...
17Gotta love him
18God Bless North America (I cant even single out the US on this one cause Canada can be just as bad).
Land of "Everyone has the right to their own opinion (as long as it agrees with the majority)"
I'm FROM America and thats how I feel sometimes
19Not all the time, but sometimes
I'm not surprised at his outspokenness, but I am surprised to hear him coming out in favor of Biblical teachings...I've always loved Prince's music but I guess I just didn't know which religion he practiced.
20Gods in my living room. got lost on the way. he is having a cuppa tea. he'll get there soon lol
21He's talking about Sodom and Gomorrah... well it is in the bible, but it's up to each individual to believe it or not.
22lisa101 - LOL I love it
23Truth is, if you don't want to know that a person has to say... don't frickin' ask. Simple as that. Even if he was a pastor of a church you'd still have to choose to listen.
24for someone whos image has been sexually ambiguous, its a tad surprising though
25Overcompensating, methinks.
26He is a closet case anyway. who cares what her has to say anyway!
27i have to agree that he's all about shock so that's kind of normal to me.
28I hate when people find "god" and suddenly decide to subvert their whole life's message. Sex is not an evil thing. Get off your high horse and stop judging people, you purple freak! Irony, I know!
29he's clearly getting that Oprah, Tyra, Beyonce complex where he thinks he's jesus.
billy you are judging him... a bit hypocritical are we??? People can learn the wrong in their ways. AND I didn't read that he said sex was an evil thing, he was simply paraphrasing the bible's story or sodom and gomorrah.
30LOL who cares what little 5'2 Princess has to say? I wonder if he'll give up living on the lap of luxury after all most of his fans are G-A-Y! I bet he'll over look that though.
31Agree with Hainan57. I don't understand how him expressing his opinion translates into him thinking he's Jesus??? Also, his comment didn't say sex was evil. Learn to read more accurately, then make a comment.
32Glad to know he didn't say actually say that. But it was shocking when I thought that he did because his whole image is based on being sexual and somewhat feminine. Have you ever listened to the lyrics in a Prince song?
*Side-note* When I was a kid I found Prince tape in a box of my uncle's old stuff and thought he was a shirtless woman covering his breasts(which horrified me, it being in my uncle's stuff). When my mother explained to me that the person on the cover was actually a man it kind of disturbed me more
33billy, you are mocking his religion, judging him, calling him a freak. Youi are doing exactly what you accuse him of doing. as a christian I know many people whos past was questionable but once they accept "God" into thier lives they are the best sort to spread his message.
34He made an announcement LONG ago that he wont sing his old songs in concert any longer, he still sells out!
35Nope - no surprise here. I mean it's Prince y'all.
36Thanks for the update briand!
I was like WTF?? I knew that didn't make sense!
37I'm not surprised...but I always thought he was gay. Ooops.
38I believe that he is referring to Sodom and Gomorrah, and if you believe in the Bible and Jesus, then most likely you also believe that this was an actual event. God destroyed the city and it's inhabitants because of the way that they had chosen to live their lives. They had gone against his will and did the things that he had strictly prohibited. To be quite honest, I'm not sure how to feel about gay marriage. I understand that their are people who have chosen to live their life. SOME have fought their feelings thinking or knowing that it could hurt their family or friends. The constitution says that all people have equal rights, which means that unless the constitution is changed, then our government cannot say who is allowed to get married and who is not.
39Glad that he didn't say it. Even though we are free to say whatever they want, we should show some decorum. The way the journalist quote him made him sound a tad rude me think.
40I honestly can't stand it when people famous or not have a religious awakening and therefore judge people because they think it's justifiable . I mean I get it but just because you read the bible and go to Church, Temple, Kingdom Hall, etc doesn't give you the RIGHT to judge others because you yourself are not PERFECT. All we really need is Love in our hearts to be better people
41Very true indeed cnyc. After all, Jesus did say "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
42I'm disgusted.
43There is a common - and dangerous - misinterpretation in today's world that stating clearly what you believe is right or wrong equals judging others. Taken to the extreme, it would really mean the break-down of the common set of values our societies are based on - and the end of freedom of speech.
I believe that at the very centre of Christianity, there is a set of rules and values which Christians belive come from a divine power (and have been interpreted and "safeguarded" by the various Chuch Councils over the generations). At the same time, there is also free will, which has been granted by God to every living person. In practice, this means that as a Christian, I believe that to practice homosexuality or to have an abortion is a sin, but I also respect that each and every one of us has free will to choose to perform such acts - just as I will sin in 100 different ways every day.
Personally, I do not believe that Jehova's Witnesses is based on Christian values and the teachings of the Bible, but I still applaud Prince for stading up for what he believes in, in particular in an era where the space for what is politically correct seems to narrow sharply - and dangerously.
44my mom has worked with this guy a handful of times over the last 20 or so years and says he's a complete flake, lol. so yah, these hair brained comments are not surprising to me at all.
45Artemis, i totally agree. He was simply stating what he believed in the bible to be true... how is that judgment??? I believe what God meant by not judging others is that you don't know what is in another person's heart, and therefore you cannot tell a person what will happen upon their judgment day with God. You cannot tell a person, you are going to hell.... because of their acts. Same as, just because a person seems nice, you cannot tell them they are going to heaven, because it is what is in their Heart that God will judge. Simply stating that you believe homosexuality is wrong is not a judgment. It's like stating that robbing a bank is wrong, or cheating on your wife. You aren't casting judgment..... Calm down folks....
46every one has thier own cross to bear, and issues. Its never too late to change and build a closer relationship to god if you believe. wheather you believe or not, straight or gay you still belong to god (your creator) . he still loves you ,weather you feel you deserve his grace or not. I feel prince is a beautiful person inside and out . people that are negative toward him really dont know him. listen to his music, even the ones that dont make radio play ,they have wonderful heartwarming messages.
