We've been counting down the biggest headlines of 2008, and we'll be revealing more as the year comes to a close. We hope you enjoy this look back at some of the posts and stories that created the most buzz throughout the year.
Miley Cyrus continued to skyrocket to fame in 2009, becoming a worldwide superstar that some compare to Britney Spears. However, Miley found herself in the midst of a scandal after posing for a Vanity Fair photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz in April. The main photo of Miley draped in a bed sheet with her bare back exposed had parents very upset that the then-15-year-old Disney role model was setting a bad example for her fans. Her parents made it seem like they had left the shoot early, although VF claimed the opposite and defended the photo, while Annie argued that the picture was just "misunderstood."

Miley issued an apology to her fans saying that the shoot was "supposed to be 'artistic'" but that she was now "embarrassed." Disney thought the magazine took advantage of the teen star and even vowed to keep Miley out of the spotlight until the storm passed, which had intensified after personal photographs of Miley were leaked on the Internet. She also got in a bit of trouble when she and a friend made a video mocking Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Since then, things have calmed down for the young singer, and in a recent interview she stated she'd love to work with Annie again and maybe even take up photography herself.
I thought the picture of her reclining on her father were almost worse. Regardless I think it will soon be Selenaland.
1I think you mean "skyrocket to fame in 2008" not "2009" Pop
2I don't get the big deal about the VF shoot. I also don't get the big deal about Miley.
3I don't get hype either. I think the best thing about her doing the VF shoot is that now she has expressed an interest in photography and sees Leibovitz as something of an idol.
4I don't think these pictures were scandalous at all. Can we just forget about Miley Cyrus all together.
5I completely forgot about these. The pictures didn't even come out nice... I wouldn't go back to that photog. Miley's got a case of WannaGrowUpTooFastitis... eventually she'll get there and will regret pushing the clock.
Uggh I was always the opposite and I still don't wanna grow up. *licks her lollypop (in a cute way)*
6I lost major respect for Annie for taking the pictures. She did what she was told to do. Her dad should have said no anyway. I don't see the big deal except that little girls love her. There are even a few songs of hers I sing because they are fun. Another media meal ticket...it's sad really.
7That picture is so awful!
8The Teen Choice picture made her look like a Sound of Music kid.
9Gosh - Cover your backs, girls, & don't go to the beach unless you're COMPLETELY COVERED FROM HEAD TO TOE! There was nothing wrong with that photo-shoot. Since when are dress codes so... (for lack of a better word) Talibanish? Other girls/women showed "more" of their bodies getting in/out of cars, much less "every day wear" - Unless you have Swiss cheese for brains no names need be mentioned! Have any of you seen news reports from spring break & college girls - They're like 18ish?
The truly "scandalous" thing was nobody calling out the people responsible for getting "crotch shots" of certain girls/women celebrities. Was no-one else disgusted or shocked by how CLOSE someone had to get to get THOSE shots? That was absolutely criminal! Reminded me of pervs taking hidden shots of girls/women in public bathroom stalls/changing rooms.
10That was so absurd. There is a frantic phobia in the US about the sexuality of children. Rather than letting teenagers experience their sexuality gradually until adulthood, they are treated like children until they are free to sleep around and get drunk in college making fools of themselves and embarrassing our country abroad.
This is a picture of a teen learning to be sexy, and enjoying her youth. It was classy, well done, and almost hid her chipmunk face, not an easy feat! The only ones who found this scandalous were Christian fundies who get their panties tied up in a knot because they were forced to suppress any feelings of sensuality.
That being said, I hope we see a lot less of this one soon.
11I hope the hype around her dies down in 2009, I kind of want her to disappear because IMO she is annoying and isn't as talented as people think. She's growing up way too fast.
12The picture of her naked back didn't disturb me when I first saw it. Miley's complexion in that photo looked worse...she looked pasty and ghostly. I'm sure that was the purpose of the shot, but it didn't suit Miley.
Anyway, don't see the hype around her. I've seen a couple of Hannah Montana episodes with my nieces, plus her concert. Her vocals are not impressive and sometimes she overacts her scenes.
13she's way overrated, as is everything else in the mouse house.
14I really like Miley to be honest. I don't think the pictures are offensive.
15I don't see the big deal about these pics and I kinda like the one where she is with her dad. My friend and her dad have a close relationship and I could see them posing like that.
16The picture of her naked back didn't offend me, but she certainly looked ghoulish in the face area. Nas-tay.
17so is there like no gossip anymore?
18she looks awful in that picture.. she also looks bad in the picture with her dad
19Omg she shouldnt apologize because its too late she already toke the picture
20still ridiculous. I hate Miley so much. You shouldn't do that when you have 8 year old girls who look up to you. Come on now.
But then you shouldn't make videos of yourself slamming other Disney stars either.
she's a horrible role model.
21how are you a bad role model for taking a tasteful photo? is she a bad role model for (gasp) owning a back??? Should she act like an 8 year old?
22The problem I had with the picture is not that she had exposed her back, it was that it looked like an "after-sex" picture (as well as a terrible photo in general) and it is not really appropriate when she wants to be a good role model to young girls. Her words, not mine.
Silvers, it's not just "Christian fundies" who necessarily have a problem with this photo. It's mostly moms (I am not one btw) that I have noticed have a problem with this picture because their girls look up to Miley. I'm not saying that exposing your back is wrong, like I said before, it's what it implies.
P.S. Miley is the one who claims to have strong Christian values. I can understand that she was probably manipulated, but I still don't think this photo is tasteful for a 15 year old.
23I don't think it's so much the Vanity Fair pictures in general. It's that added onto many other pictures of her that have surfaced on the internet. And then how she is this big religious person who is constantly apologizing for everything she does. It doesn't add up.
24i lovee miley buht srsly im SO sick of her scandals.
XO
25Let the young have their life and have fun doing so!
