Jennifer Aniston and the Cox-Arquette family celebrated Christmas Eve with their annual dinner at Mastro's, but Jennifer's real present arrived at LAX on Friday morning. John Mayer flew into town with his two brothers and the group was soon off to dinner at Wolfgang's Steakhouse. While Jen may not have made John's top five of the year list, she didn't have to worry too much about Marley & Me coming out on top at the box office over the long holiday weekend. Not only did the movie come in at number one, but it broke the record for a Christmas day release. It sounds like most of you were excited to see it in theaters and we were right there with you — Jen was fabulous and the whole movie so heartbreaking and adorable. After such a great end to 2008, Jen will have only bigger and better things to cheers on New Year's Eve before she kisses John at the stroke of midnight.

1My God Molly, anymore sugary and I'll be able to eat my shortstack right on the keyboard! Jen was not the star or only actor in this movie but you'd never know that since the media has decided to act as if the movie's a hit because of her, and pit (no pun intended) Pitt's release against it. Meredeth Viera(sp) went so far as to suggest it was payback! GMA had a dude even bring up how "Jen's movie" made more money in one day than Angelina's "Changeling" made in 3 weeks or months (I forget.)
People split everyday, even other celebs, but because Brad chose who he chose, this will never die. imo of course.
2Her movie opened up in more theaters then the Curious Case of Benjamin Button did (info via Box Office Mojo) and I am very annoyed people feel the need to compare her box office with the Changeling(via the GMA BS this morning). That film had an early release date and a wide release date and still didn't match the number of theaters the dog movie opened in. So congratulations to Jen but it doesn't mean her movie persona holds much appeal to audiences considering this is time when people go to the movies less.
3LOVE ANGELINA, I forgot about the CBS hosts. The female host asked the male host if he had a choice to see Benjamin Button OR "Jennifer Aniston" (of course he said JA). I couldn't believe it. They didn't say "Marley & Me," but Jennifer Aniston. Ok, the power of stripping down to nothing but a tie just before a movie you're in comes out "even if you aren't per se the star" apparently DOES have an effect on box office.
4i knew it, lol
it was in less theaters because it was an hour longer, but i will stop right there i don't want to get shot in the arm
5and btw bb came out in third not even in second so there must not been to much competition
6i'm really happy for jen that her movie did better than brad's movie - and i think that it's nice that she broke christmas records as well. it's great to see that john is still really into supporting her - that's a nice change from what we were seeing months and months ago.
7ilanac exactly brads movie this is what this is, BB brad's movie, MM Jennifer's movie, even though both movies have big names in them they are still Brad and Jenn's movies
8Jen's movie didn't do better than Brad's movie. Jen's movie opened in more theaters than Brad's. Brad's film actually did a very good job...considering the number of opening it had.
9They went to see the dog!!! Has everyone forgot that M&M was a best selling book? Jen didnt have a thing to do with that, this movie was going to be big no mater who was in it... Jen got lucky...again!
10Well adjusted people don't want to keep reading about this triangle junk. I think Mayer picture is used just to bring up Jen's name again. One thing you keep hearing is Jen movie topped Brads. What about Owen Wilson, wasn't he in the movie? what about his fans who may have went to the movie to see him.
11This triangle thing is so disgusting and proves Jen and those around her did not moved on with there life. After four years that's just mental illness. I am a fan JM, I feel this is the worst mistake he could have made to let Jen and the pr team use him.
I just feel sorry for John to a certain point because Jen, her pr team and her fans don't care one bit about John Mayer. He seems to be a tool Jen and the pr team along with this site uses as an excuse to bring up Jen's name every chance they can. Look at whats written under JM's picture, you can count the few little words they said about John the rest was all about Jen. John is a cover use to act like Jen moved on and she really didn't. It's too bad every trick in the book was used to try to push that movie to #1 but I'm sure Jen and her pr team don't care who they had to step on, rob or tear down to get there just long as they got there and that's just desperate and pathetic.
loveangelina brads movie was also 1 hour + longer that's why it was in fewer theaters
12Glad Marley and Me was such a hit, I knew it would be! I still need to drag myself out to see it!
13$14 million doesn't pay her or Owen's salary...and the dog's trainer gets a smidgen, the director... What's your point with the shameful PR? I agree. People were running away from their families to go see a movie with an adorable dog (not the b*tch).
As for the pictures... I wonder if that's Ben behind them? I saw a pic of Carl. He and John look like frickin' twins.
14happy for jen!!
i love that people are trying to turn this into a negative thing regarding jen. "it's owen's movie, too!" well, of course it is, but jen's a bigger star. you know, if it had sucked at the box office, it would have all been jen's fault.
CCOBB opened in about 400 less theaters. not thousands less. so, not so far apart. and it opened in one foreign market, too. and the per screen average for the films: marley=$10,632 and button=$9,036...
15Jennifer's a bankable star - Brad used to be and Angelina is definitely not.
16too bad Owen was dragged in as a tool too from Jenn's pr camp, Jenn's a b*tch wow
17Aren't both Brad and Angie up for a Golden Globe? maybe they shoot for acting quality more so than scraping by on a slow movie day.
18Amazing.
19Changeling will open on January 9th here in Brazil and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button only on January 16th so it's not the same thing (Marley & Me has already opened here).
*I'm really glad my niece declined to watch M&M. If she had said yes, I would have had to go with her
20Wow, I can't believe how many angry people over Jen's success at the box office. You people would be refering to Marley and me as Jennifer's movie ONLY if the movie was a flop, right??? And what about Owen? Well, it was his movie too, so the success was for the both of them. Brad's movie did well, but Jen's movie had a better per screen average even when it opened in more theaters. The movie was a hit this weekend, end of story.
21We saw Marley and Me on Christmas Day.It's a fantastic movie.Kudos to the entire cast and all the adorable Marleys.Jennifer and Owen had amazing chemistry...the movie stayed true to the book and that was a plus.Glad it was number one at the box office.Hope it continues to do well!!
A little info for those that think CCBB was only on 2988 screens.Read this...BOMOJO keeps track of such things!
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opened to a healthy estimated $27 million on close to 4,100 screens at 2,988 locations for a four-day tally of $39 million. The fantastical drama was the sole attempt at a sweeping epic, with its life-spanning tale of a man (Brad Pitt) aging backwards, and its debut was on the high end among comparable titles. The advertising struck a romantic, melancholic and mysterious tone, and its story and scale recalled Forrest Gump (though it didn't reach Gump's attendance heights). Distributor Paramount Pictures' research suggested that 60 percent of the audience was female and 70 percent was over 25 years old.

22why are people so bitter? If Brad did well everyone would have no worries to say its brad's movie versus Jens....however..tables are turned and her movie smashed it out the water and now its ...well Jen wasnt the only one in the movie...this success has nothing to do with her....etc
People just say fair play and move on.
Im planning on seeing both movies regardless of this dumb triangle. Jeez.
Its fact that Jen has alot of pulling power. They both do. Why do we have to bash either because of all this team business...
23amen lilflowa
24Idalia, I'm not angry over Aniston's success. But the movie is based on a best-seller book so most of its success has to do with that -- not the main actors, regardless of who they are.
And yes, M&M IS a hit. However I don't plan to watch it even if my life depends on that -- and this is not because of Jennifer Aniston's presence: I don't like her (except in Friends) but the fact she's in certain movies has never stopped me to watch them.
25eveday, Most of the success of movies, in recent years, have nothing to do with the stars. It's mostly the story and how it appeals to people and that has a lot to do with the trailers and how the movie is being promoted. Even Will Smith (which I thought was the only star who could open movie based on his name only) is struggling with his latest film. I mean Seven Pounds is doing ok, but it is not a big hit like his previous films.
26I've seen several films this month but I am not planing to see Brad's movie. Three hours is way too much to take of Brad Pitt.
I don't like Brad Pitt either but I love David Fincher's films so I can't wait to watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
27Iam so glad for Jennifer!!
Maybe now she will focus in her career.
Now she doesn't have to talk about the JPs for publicity,or inspire pity anymore and maybe not even make naked covers. Who knows?
The JP's will be left alone AT LAST, being a family, doing their movies, their philanthropic work, etc.
See people, Jennifer is fine! she is bankable, not good actress if you read the reviews, but wth, there are so many people like this in HW and she has a boyfriend too!
28Both Jennifer and Brad's film did very well at the box office. They are two entirely different types of movies and in no way comparable. All of the Jen fans were thrilled when "A Mighty Heart" did poorly at the box office and when Warner Brothers pulled "Assassination of Jesse James" and yet Angelina keeps getting major critical success and her box office this year was over $1 billion dollars. Jennifer's movie will probably make $200 million dollars. That's great! It isn't doing anyone any good to set up these ridiculous comparisons and competitions. As JA said on Oprah "Can't we both do well?"
29Idalia, I don't appreciate the reducing my opinion down to something as silly as what you've suggested. It's patronizing at best. My words are about the media turning it into a battle of the ex's, them bringing Angelina into it, and also the credit for the movies success seemingly going to no one but her. No, I'm not petty like you suggest. I wouldn't be doing flips over the film flopping if it had.
30Jen and her people are acting like this was Jen's movie all by her self and completely dissed Owen. Jen's pr people are passing this as Jen's movie and saying Jen beat Brad's movie. Why ignore Cate who was also in TCCBB, what about her. What gives Jen and her pr team the right to even proclaim this to be her movie by herself. Look at what is written up top where is Owen's name. How many post have you put up congratulating him.
31There is just some so mentally ill about this whole triangle mess.
At least they all have films out, being actors, the thing they used to be known for. I for one am glad about that.
32Cinquetta, my comment, assuming that you're refering to my first post, is NOT directed at anyone in particular. Sorry if you thought that was about you.
Jakob, what do you mean Jen's pr is saying that Jen beat Brad?? Did her rep made a comment about it? So far I've seen these type of comments from several bloggers and of course the tabloids. If it had been the other way around they will be saying Brad beat Jen or something like that. In that case, would it be fair to say Brad's pr planted that.
33A Might Heart didn't fail at the Box office. It was an independent film it was never intended to be a box office hit...the media doesn't get the concept of films so just because a big star is in one its supposed to be a hit.
I could care less Jen's film is number one. I am more annoyed with the again comparing of the box office which then again led to "show downs" between Angie and Jen...and Angie is way above being compared to this woman over and over. They have a man in common and nothing much else. I would really like all the triangle crap to end.
34What has Jen's PR team got to do with anything? And people keep saying that like she is the only actress with a "team". The film spoke for itself.
Bloggers,Newsreaders, entertainment presenters etc has their own minds you know....but oh wait, i forgot anyone who says anything remotely positive about her is part of her PR team...or hired...paid by etc
Enough with this nonesense. Give it a rest already.
The film did well end of. Stop feeding the media.
35I'm sooo excited for Jennifer Aniston. I saw M&M this weekend and it was fantastic. Both her and Owen did a great job and was adorable. A great movie for a great book. Its great she kicked Brad's butt at the box office. Thanks Amanda for providing the average per screen dollars, it shows that Brad's movie would not have beaten M&M. Lets not even bring Angelina into the equation because she does not have the appeal of a large audience and never will.
36"Lets not even bring Angelina into the equation because she does not have the appeal of a large audience and never will."
amen to that sabrina
37Amen lilflowa amen.......
38How does Angelina not "have the appeal of a large audience" when people tend to get extremely fired up over her? THAT is mass appeal...it's that "it" factor. She may not be well-liked, but as an actor, she's really well-respected. I still don't understand why Jennifer Aniston's name has to have Angelina Jolie's name in the next breath. If anyone should be taken down that road, shouldn't it be Brad? How does he get off scott free?! I didn't see the CBS show, but if that really happened, that is pretty crappy. Didn't Jennifer make the rounds and say "let's not be catty"? Let it go, people. Let it go...
I'm happy for the Marley & Me success, because it was a great book. I love when great books turn into good movies. How could it NOT have done better than Benjamin Buttons? It was in the cards--well-known book, cute as hell dog, family oriented...any other actors could've taken over the leads and it still would've done really well. I'd be surprised if it didn't open at #1. Buttons was a wonderful movie, too, and it was superbly acted, but it certainly wasn't for anyone under the age of 15. It's not a question of Jen vs. Brad, and just because her film made more money doesn't mean "she's beaten him." Nothing's changed. Again, let it go people...especially media people! I have to look up that CBS show. That is just horrible!
Finally, I hope there's NYE pix of John and his brothers. They are just too gorgeous for words! I also hope Jen & John wear something other than black.
Either way they will look pretty, though...
39I like how the haters said the movie will bomb, because it's a JA movie and now that it's no. 1 they say it's the dog's movie. Always trying to find excuse, so funny.
40Sabrina27 & pinkprincess, no one BROUGHT up Angelina here for the heck of it and stop asserting that they did. The M E D I A brought her into it and so go spank them. And another thing, Sabrina27, it's attitudes like "I'm glad Jen's movie kicked Brad's butt at the box office" that keep the mess going. If I sound ticked, I am because I find it amazing how the same ones have no problem whatsoever picking apart on a consistant basis Brad, Angelina and anything pertaining to them, but Jen gets a critic or two, and a valid one at that, and the same want to cry foul. She IS getting all the credit for the movie. She DID strip for the PR. She IS being hailed as beating out her ex. There's not one thing said that the media didn't stick out there first so hold your roll.
41Jen and Owen were both very good in the movie. The book was good
42and therefore the movie is good but they did a really good job in
it. I enjoyed it and will get the dvd when it comes out. It was
funny, warmhearted and true to life. I saw Benjamin Button too
but I didn't care at all for it. Regardless of who you like, it
just wasn't a very good movie. The first half was boring then
he turns into a child at the end. I just failed to find it very
entertaining. Brad just didn't put himself into it like he should
have.
Jen well deserved I read the book, so i definitely had to see the movie.. It was great you were #no1 at the box office congrats..to you Owen & Marley..
43What's the big deal? Even Tom Cruise' movie did well at the box office. Brad can't act..I think an actor should have more than one or two facial expressions on his face during a movie. Angelina conveys more emotion in one eye than brad could ever dream of...
44BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!Jen's movie did do better than Brad's movie
Brad sucks!!!!!!
45Does anyone else think this Jen vs Angie thing is getting a little old?
46What a relief that Aniston was in a hit movie. Perhaps now the Faniston's can relax.
Statistically neither Jennifer or Brad are as bankable as Owen Wilson, who has been in movies that had a total box office gross of $2,140,796,747; average gross of movies he's starring in: $57,814,268.
Compared to Jennifer's $688,831,101 total gross of all films she has been in; Average gross movie starring in: $45,921,740.
Brad has $1,634,826,750 total career gross; average gross of movies starring him $61,129,452.
Though some of the biggest successes in those numbers include Bruce Almighty and the Break-up, which sold about as many tickets as Jennifer's other 14 movies total.
Brad had 7 films over the $100 million mark, plus Jesse James which made under $4 million.
Owen's been in a lot of huge films like Armageddon, Fockers, Wedding Crashers, Cars, Night at Museum, all which sold over $200 million each.
(all numbers are prior to last week's releases.)
47the loonies are always the first to call names
48Frankly, I think Ange is a terrible actress who wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for her beautiful face, well-crafted media sex appeal and Hollywood dad.
49Yes, her movies make a lot of money but only the ones where she prances about with guns doing stunts and taking clothes off. Whenever she's in a dramatic role, her movies tank. Most of the critics are not that impressed with her either.
She may have won an Oscar and is nominated for a Golden Globe but awards have not been the hallmark of quality for a very long time. With the exception of Helen Mirren, most of the awards tend to go to young pretty things. Young and pretty + hollywood parentage + play a psycho = a guaranteed academy award!
As for Jen, since she grew up as a slightly chubby and insecure girl, she had to rely on talent and character to get anywhere. She's not only a really good comedy actress (which is something far more difficult than action) but also a surprisingly excellent dramatic one. Please refer to The Good Girl, Friends with Money, Derailed etc. to see what I mean.
Jennifer has Hollywood parentage. Her father is an actor and has been on one show for 21 years. And not that this thread has anything to do with Jolie, but if you're going to bring up her awards, she has won 3 Golden Globes in addition to the Oscar. Streep has won many awards long since she was a "pretty young thing".
I think Jennifer's drama is terrible, as evidently the ticket buying audience seems to agree, but she was good in the Good Girl. Her biggest selling movies are comedies.
