Most of us are worried about Joaquin Phoenix losing it but apparently he has his mind set on being a rapper and he kicked off his debut in Vegas this weekend. Before we saw these videos many said you could not take him seriously as a rapper, and here is his debut as well as an unfortunate post-rap fall offstage. So now that we have more evidence, watch the videos below and discuss — is Joaquin Phoenix crazy or all talent?

He's just plain nuts. He's starting to remind me of Britney circa 2007.
1This is just so sad
2I think he should call it a day and seek help. I don't see anything "talented" in his behavior, just insufferable weirdness.
3He just has to be punking us!! Please let him be!!!!
4Drugs.
5Joaquin was an awesome acting talent, but I'm grateful to Pop we didn't have to listen to his whole act to see his graceful fall off stage. He simply doesn't have the voice for rap. I was surprised when he decided to give up acting for singing he chose RAP!??
When I
saw him on Walk the Line I thought he sang Johnny Cash's songs better than Johnny Cash. I trust if he really is not going back into acting he will at least change the genre of music he sings,
otherwise he may end up going to the soup kitchen for his food.
6I adore him and I firmly believe he has lost his ever loving mind. Maybe he is just rebelling against the system for awhile. I know what that means to just rebellion and do something nuts. So I say let him let lose and be crazy. Hopefully its not drugs and anything serious.
7AllI can think about what his performance as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. This can't really be happening.
8I'm pretty sure he's punking us. I read on another website that Casey Affleck was also at Lavo for the "performance" because he's directing a documentary about Joaquin trying to break into the rap scene. Something tells me this will turn out to be a huge joke.
9This is either a really great joke or a horrible career move by an insane man who needs to be committed.
10Danielle970, I hope you're right. Really. He's one of my top five favorite actors...I don't think I'm ready to lose the opportunity of watching his amazing acting skills in the future.
11i agree with Danielle970, but i don't think it's a joke. i think he's making a point.
his brother died of a drug overdose and had many people around him that watched him spiral out of control. i think it's possible that he could be making a documentary based on something like this. already, people are looking at him and laughing when clearly (if this would be real) he'd be needing some help right now. there are so many famous people that have messed up their lives while the world has sat by watching. i'm thinking that he's going to try to bring the light to this.
i hope i'm right, because if i'm wrong, we're watching something very very sad and no one can say much more than "oh look! he sucks at rapping and he fell off the stage! haha!".
12oh my goddness...definetely lost it. And i hope its all a joke. If it isnt...oh dear...
13I'm confused: what exactly is it that's sad or crazy about joaquin leaving acting to do rap? Is it that he didn't choose a musical career à la jonny cash (and quite a few other actors for that matter) doing country or rock?
14I mean, if the dude is passionate about rap, then there's no shame in his giving it a go - whether or not success or talent are involved is another issue. It's not as though he's out getting involved in debaucherous behaviour or alienating his friends (casey's in on it too); actors are people too who have a variety of passions, so whether or not joaquin is doing this in all earnest, he ought not to be relegated to the crazy league for following his passion on account of the fact that we're not feeling it!
Whatever. I totally support him and his decision to try something differenet. Who are we to judge him? I got your back, Joaquin. I'm totally buying his album when it come out
15Coming from a family of mental illness (I seem to have dodged the bullet, thankfully), his actions aren't "crazy". He's had an interesting young childhood (born to Children of God, um, "missionaries") coupled with a permissive lifestyle and has tragically lost an older brother. He's been a child star and brother of a child/teen star, and probably has not been told "no" very much in his life. Even though he's amazingly talented, one can wonder if he's never felt like he's been taken seriously as an actor following in the footsteps of his older brother.
Many stars/celebs have branched out and tried different things, yet have been called "entrepeneurial." I wonder if it's his deliberate thumbing-of-the-nose at acting paired with his unkempt appearance. People said the same thing about Heath Ledger when he was immersed as The Joker. We could blame drugs for Joaquin as well, but why speculate when we don't have video evidence a la Kate Moss?
I say let him try what he wants. K-Fed went from dancer to rapper, and luckily HIS career went nowhere. I thought the rapping was crap myself, but I couldn't hear the words and the audio quality was poor. I wonder if he is any better in a studio recording?
Oh, and I've fallen of a stage before. It SO sucks.
16@lolabella - "off" a stage before. Learn to spell when you're being all high-n-mighty. Ahem.
17I am with the people who believe he is doing this as some kind of artistic point. I'm quite sure he isn't serious about the rapping and that no one would actually encourage him to do it if this wasn't part of a bigger project. In fact, it may be the point that he is trying to make that people will just sit back and watch someone fall apart for their own entertainment. I'm curious to see how long this goes on.
18Its great otaku has given him an out. He can now bow out gracefully (unlike his leaving the stage) and act like it was all part of a conscious plan to help his friend make money and get recognition for a documentary
19The sooner the better! I wonder if the audience will also get a cut for having to listen to him.
20Sad...
21He looks and sounds like he's on something.
22So, so sad...
23Great points, Lolabella
But I still want my old Joaquin back.
24Oh my goodness. Danielle, I was thinking the very same thing when i heard Casey Affleck was documenting this, so here's hoping this turns out to be some sort of parody, or as pixiedust and Otaku said, maybe the point is to act as if he's falling apart at the seams and point a spotlight at how the industry, the paparazzi and the "fans" just lap it up like it's happening for their entertainment.
I just hope in one way or another there's more to this than meets the eye, otherwise he's in serious trouble.
25lolobella, I think there's plenty of video evidence out there of him staggering around, talking incoherently and showing all the signs of generally being a big mess! Whether it's down to a mental illness or substance abuse I don't know, but he needs help, and it has nothing to do with the fact that he quit acting and has decided to become a rapper.
He could quit acting and decide to make balloon animals for all I care, as long as he was healthy and well doing it.
26I got your back, Joaquin. I'm totally buying his album when it come out
Black Velveteen, only you to make me laugh on this thread
27I agree w/ ticamorena and Black Velveteen. In fact I applaud him for being brave enough to step out there for whatever reason he's doing it. Life's to short. Maybe it's not a forever move but one that he needed to get out of his system.
28I'm not really sure what to think about this, but I don't see Casey as an enabler. Maybe they are just really bored and have found a way to amuse themselves.
Joaquin, I know you are still a hottie under all that mess.
29he'll be back to tinsel town before we know it
30he is out. of. his. mind.
31Poor Joaquin..hope he finds those lost marbles, because I really like him as an actor.
32He really should get treatement for his substance abuse problem.
33'Treatment', that is.
34He seems like he's going through an identity crisis. Joaquin has been acting since he was a kid (see "Parenthood"), so in that sense I don't blame him for wanting to try something different. Unfortunately, it appears his judgement is off when it comes to trying to make a lateral career move in another direction. I am willing to keeping an open mind, but I really don't think this rapper thing is going to pan out for him. I hope he proves us all wrong.
35I think it's probably a bit of a joke; as Danielle already pointed out, I heard that Casey Affleck was making a documentary about Joaquin breaking into rap. He's obviously terrible; I suspect that he could do better if he "tried" as evidenced by his performance as Cash.
Anyway, it's great / funny if we wants to try doing something new.
If he's "on something", who knows better than he does the dangers of drugs? Must be rather deliberate on his part.
36he's reached crazy status, unfortunately.
37What the heck?! I love him. Drugs are sooo bad.
38I like him a lot but Ive seen many of his VH-1 interviews and he's really like sick with drugs. He was not talking about his movies but frogs on the hair of the reporter and this was way before his retirement news.
39this is MADNESS!
40He officially looks like a hobo now! ugh
It's so sad, he is such a great actor!
41he is crazy gone off the deep in, I don't care too much about the way he looks but wow does he suck! He make k-fed look like run dmc. This is so sad that he thinks he can do this
42who are the 187 people who said this was talent. Walk The Line--Pheonix as Cash; that was talent. This? This is pure... lunacy...
43Please let this be a joke rather than a descent into madness.
44Joaquin...you were so wonderful in Walk the Line. I get you want to do music but this is NOT your genre. Please let this be a joke.
45maybe he is doing a documentry or whatever as Danielle970 said.
46That would be realy funny if its true.
I hope it is :S

47That would be realy funny if its true.

I think it's clear he is pulling off some kind of Spinal Tap-like joke on us all. Casey Affleck's involvement kind of confirms this.
48He couldn't possibly be this crazy for real!! Could he?
Wackadoodle with crack sprinkled on top
49He seems like a pretty funny guy, so this HAS to be a joke... Now if he were to become a singer then that would be cool, he has a great voice. Remember Walk the Line?
50But this rapping thing is ridiculous!
