2As any old-schol surfing fan would recognize, Matthew is wearing the shorts made classic by big wave pioneer Greg Noll. The man was a fearless legend in the 50s and 60s. He was in Stacey Peralta's movie Riding Giants. Before Laird Hamilton was even born, Greg Noll was riding bigger waves.

9I wonder if this is going to be the Americanized version of France's "Brice de Nice". BdN is about this incredibly spoiled rich guy in his early 30s who is obsessed with the movie Point Break and spends every day waiting for "the wave" to hit Nice. Brice had a closet full of bright yellow t-shirts with his name on them and wore the same outfit every day...

11Okay girls--I just IMDb'd Surfer Dude. There weren't any details on what it's about, but I saw there was a main female character named April May. In Brice, everyone's first name rhymed with the city where they were from.
I think it's kind of cool that in Brice, the surfer he idolized wasn't a real guy but Bodhi from Point Break. It fit with the theme that Brice had a lot of growing up to do, which in part meant facing the realities of the world.
Not sure how this Americanized version is going to turn out. The original is wild fun, so I hope you get a chance to check it out on Netflix or something.

22Seriously--I think we should give this movie (and Matthew) a chance! His character is supposed to look like an incredibly rich, overgrown kid who spends all his time in the sun. He's never held a job and literally does not know what work is. Scraggly blond locks are part of the character. Google "Brice de Nice" and you will see.
Anyway, the only thing that rivals his obsession with himself is surfing. His world falls apart when his pop gets busted for embezzlement or something. He ends up broke, all of his possessions taken away except for his surfboard...
Normally, I don't like French comedy (I glare at the screen while my husband happily snorts & chuckles) but this one really worked for me! If you like French films, I recommend also that you go see Angel-A. It's being released in the US pretty soon. Both Angel-A and Brice de Nice are terrific films--I give both my two (chicago-style
