After bringing the whole family to Japan last week, Angelina took a detour before heading home. As part of her UNHCR United Nations Human Rights work, she traveled to Thailand to pay a visit to the camps filled with Myanmar refugees, some who have been there for their entire lives. Angelina sat down to talk to refugees, including teenage girls and young women very scared about what their future holds. Today Angelina released a plea to the government of Thailand to allow the refugees the ability to leave camps and move more freely in the area. She said of the people she met,

"I was saddened to meet a 21-year-old woman who was born in a refugee camp, who has never even been out of the camp and is now raising her own child in a camp . . . With no foreseeable chance that these refugees will soon be able to return to Burma (Myanmar), we must find some way to help them work and become self reliant."
There are currently 110,000 registered refugees in the nine camps, and at this point, they are not allowed to leave the camps. This is about as far away as you can get — in so many ways — from the Oscar red carpet she'll be walking in just a few weeks, but from Angelina Jolie we expect nothing less and know her real passion lies in her UN work. Ok, I think her heart is in the right place most times but I can't help but think her excursions usually come when she wants us to love her again or when Jennifer A is getting some coverage
1She's a great role model for us.
2Haters leave her alone!
3we just had a new jenn thread now a new angie thread, here we go in circles, her humanitarian work is the only thing i can admire that she does, even though so many do the same if not more, but any bit counts
4Angelina has been doing traveling work on behalf of refugees before she even had Maddox so this what Angelina does. Its how she has chosen to give back. So it has nothing to with image...I honestly believe her humanitarian work is what changed her.
I really appreciate she does this and its so sad to see what people around the world go through.
5
and wheres the popcorn... and on a shallow note thats a pretty pix of her
6I think she's lovely, she has a good heart
7people are going to lose their sh*t, and i have a feeling i know who that is. zahara where is the popcorn
great way to start the drama
8Angie looks so beautiful without make up .
9Even though I'm not a fan of Angelina, I am glad that someone is helping to shed light on the human rights violations occurring by the hands of the Burmese government. I've witnessed what is happening in Burma, and if it takes a huge movie star to get people to pay attention, then so be it.
10I give her credit.. I am a wuss who hesitates to drive across the border to go to Mexico these days.. let alone fly into Thailand to visit refugee camps. While I admire anyone who writes a check or volunteers at a local homeless shelter.. I have to really give kudos to someone who actually goes to the heart of the problem in third wold countries..for people who are truly forgotten have no voice at all and and talks to the people affected to bring attention and try to make a hands on difference.
11ima i think we can all agree on that
12i read somewhere that brad was also there and brought toys for the children
13Her position with the United Nations is supposedly to use her celebrity to draw public attention to much needed areas; however, it seems that Angelina uses her UN status when she personally needs publicity, or when the Ex-Mrs Brad Pitt makes a statement. With all their homes, each costing millions of dollars, why not build a compound (city like) and give these refugees a new home life and style? Talk is cheap, especially when you profit from the publicity more than those in need get help. Why not organize fund raisers, donate fees from one of her movies, and/or help finance positive action in these areas supposedly so close to her heart?....
14hmmm
15Say what you want, she could go to a children's hospital in LA, take some pictures and then hop in her mercedes and go shopping and tanning and out for drinks....
she is literaly taking time out of her VERY priveledged life to actually care about other people. She is in third world countries risking her health and life just because not many others would do this. If it is all for show -then she is doing a great job!
16wild flower- if you look at what her and Brad donated last year alone, it was over 8 mill. You are right - talk is cheap, not for the Pitts however
17Way to go Ange! I have been gone a LONG time and people are STILL trying to find every little fault with her humanitarian efforts? Oy!
18Only jealous and celeb hating people think that wildflower. It certainly doesn't explain her going to these places before Brad was even in her life. Angelina was UN Ambassador before Brad and Angelina has traveled to areas like this one before Brad, and god forbid, even if Brad and Angie are no longer together, Angelina would still do it. This is her passion. People are just haters and I hate to say this but clearly jealous. Its sad, indeed.
19if you look at what her and Brad donated last year alone, it was over 8 mill. You are right - talk is cheap, not for the Pitts however
20I second that!
Wildflower, she did built a compound. It's called the Millinium Project with Dr. Jeff Sachs in various parts of Africa and the Maddox Jolie Project in Cambodia. It's been open since 2005 and secondly, building homes and compound you'll need to get the agreement of countries and many of them such as Myanmar do not all outsiders, other governments or even the UN to donate or do anything charitable actions in their countries. And lastly, there's many thing that she's been doing for years now, that's never announced or being publicized by various gossip sites because they are not salacious enough.
21to whom much is given, much is expected... she is just trying to do her part
22loveangelina we clearly know your feelings about angie, but there is no need to call people haters or jealous. so you must also be a big jealous hater yourself, because you also write nasty comments about other celebs. and thats sad indeed.
23that is an awful hat she has on, come on girls lets knock her for what she is wearing not her humanitarian work.
24Omg, I cannot even believe that people still claim she is doing this for publicity. The Jolie-Pitts have so much press and publicity, even too much at times, that this would not even be necessary!!!
25Also they have donated so much and done so much work...I just love how in some people's minds there only exists the alleged drama surrounding theses three people, which I honestly do not think either Jolie nor Aniston nor Pitt thinks about 24/7....only we do or not....
I really admire that and personally it makes me want to be better and do better!
26I know some people think it's a photo op but some actors do really lame photo ops like shoppin around in 4 inch heels cheesin all over the place, but at least she's going to refugee camps.
27JOLIE TEAM all the way... humanitarian work is what we should learn everyday... not gossip, not fashion, not that kind of crap that`s useless to all of us ..
28don't like her. don't need her to tell me what is going on in the world. sad that people can't pick up a foreign paper or go online to find out what's happening to the poor and disadvantaged...
29I didn't call any one a hater or jealous. There are some who are though Pink. LOL and I am not jealous of any celebrity...despite the comment I may leave.
30love i dont think anyone on this site is jealous either. amanda lol very true.
31It is great what she does and I'm sure she's inspired many people so far. And Love Angelina, it's a shame Angie doesn't read your posts. If she did, she would hire you as her publicist. Seriously!
32Hmmmm no movies to promote, so lets get some publicity!!! I personally believe in her humanitarian work but I also think she is using it for her own gain. After all according to the NY times she is the master of media manipulation.
33wildflower..
you can check out the website..for the Maddox Jolie Pitt Project which is fully funded by the Jolie Pitt Foundation and continuing to expand the Millennium Village, school, clean water initiative, soybean farms, elephant migratory paths, Asian tiger sanctuary, clear mines..etc. Jolie has built roads, schools, hospitals, farms, factories for soy milk so that the villagers can develop their farms and turn it into soy milk to be self sustaining.. she hired people to be park rangers and enforce the protection of animals in the sanctuary.. she funds and manages manage the water-conservation projects and the soil-conservation projects and the biomass-for-fuel projects and everything else that she has so far been paying for out of her own pocket.

plus the $500,000 for the Armed Service YMCA Operation Hero Program and $500,000 will go to groups dealing with Iraqi women and children struggling to learn – or simply survive (Women for Women International; The International Rescue Committee)..
Then add the $2 million dollar AIDS and Tuberculosis clinic and the school she built in Ethiopia..
that is in addition to the many monetary donations she makes throughout the year to.. Afghanistan Relief Organization, Alliance For The Lost Boys, Cancer Schmancer Movement, Clinton Global Initiative, Daniel Pearl Foundation, Direct Change, Doctors Without Borders, Global Action for Children, Human Rights Watch, Jolie-Pitt Foundation, Kids in Need of Defense, Millennium Promise Alliance, Millennium Villages, ONE Campaign, Peace One Day, Reporters Without Borders, Sophie's Gift, UNICEF, UN Millennium Project,Yéle Haiti Foundation, African Children's Choir, Ante Up For Africa, Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Canada, Child Find Ontario, Cure Autism Now, DATA, Direct Change, Donate Life America, EB Medical Research Foundation, Global Green, Human Rights Watch, Make It Right, Make Poverty History, Mineseeker Foundation, Not On Our Watch, ONE X ONE, Project A.L.S., Right To Play, Solar Neighbors Program and the World Food Program.
Also if you go to UNHCR site and look at her field missions going all the way back to 2000.. on every mission not only did she pay her own way but she donated to the special needs of each location or directly to the UNHCR program responsible for providing relief to that camp or area. .
34And what is the point of attempting to use her humanitarian work for PR for movies when she has purposely turned down offers and will only commit to film one movie this year?
So is this PR stunt aimed at audiences who will watch the movie she hasn't even started filming?
Her humanitarian work garners no votes for her through the academy.. so it is not an Oscar manipulation.
So.. I guess she decided to leave the 6 kids and fly into Thailand to visit refugees as part of her position with UNHCR just because she was jealous that Jennifer might have a sound byte being one of many supporting female actress' in a movie being released this week?
WOW.. that a lot of work and risk for that to be the cause.
35I really admire her for doing this
36Thanks for that Ima. People just need to see it.
37I admire her for her dedication, as for media manipulation to get attention, there are plenty of easiest, less dangerous way to stay in the news... i don't know she could have stayed in the US and pose nude in a controversial spreadsh*t like the **** or goes every day in the park for hours wh*ring kids in the latest mini fashonista outfits. I am sure it would have been easier and more effective to stay in the news...just saying.
Not to mention, that indeed, those 6000+ professionals who vote are influenced by someone going abroad on humanitarian trip to third world country to lend an Oscar...It makes perfect sense, just saying
38That's why I LOVE you Ima!
39Viva Angie! She's a beautiful woman, a great actress, great mother, so...Why people hate her?
40People are catty, Sica. They say they hate her because she stole Aniston's husband. So what? Everybody does it, right?
41Besides, she's Angelina and she can do no wrong.
love people need to see what, that boogles my mind.
42of course she can do wrong.. she did admittedly for her wild years.. she was a mess. But I think it is admirable when someone makes a positive change in their lives and turns a bad situation into an opportunity for growth..
you don't have to be a saint to do good things for others..
and not everyone steal others husbands/wives.. though HW has a higher ratio then non HW.. and has technically yet to be proven in this case...but that's another story. They still claim they started a relationship other than friendship after he separated from Jen and that the fell in love during the movie was a reference to the re-shoots they did after they separated.. could be true. They did do reshoots after Brad and Jen separated in March just before the divorce proceedings began officially and before the photos of them on the beach in Africa in April.. but whatever..
she has always been a polarizing celeb.. you either hate her or..not.
43Well people need to really see who Angelina is trying to help for thing. Thats the most important thing. The refugees and children are the people Angelina are trying to help and that should be the focus when Angelina does work like this. Its shouldn't turn it to "Why IS Angelina helping these people?" It shouldn't even matter...point is she is and does.
44I dislike Angelina Jolie and sometimes even Brad Pitt, but good for them for helping people. Good for anyone who risks their life or health just to bring attention to what is happening here and in other countries.
45lol, checking back in on this one to see how much **** I'd catch from people who don't and will never know her...she'll never get to pat any of you (admirers and avid defenders) on the back so let people's opinions be their opinions
46I think its great that she does this.
47surprisingly i have something nice to say about her. i really do like that she goes to places that don't always get the 'big press' so that our eyes are opened a bit more on what it's like living in other places around the world. i hope that she's able to continue to make an impact, and not just tell stories to us.
48I'm an AJ fan. I've always thought she had good acting chops. I'm a bigger fan now that she's matured because I think it takes greater effort to be an actress+mother+humanitarian than it is being a freaky wild child starlet. I'm continually surprised when I read comments that she's doing it all for publicity because as one post here mentioned (wassup Mar) she lives a very privileged life - so for her to take on being a UN Goodwill Ambassador, and have the commitment to help the needy, is in my book, commendable. I'm sure there are a lot of wealthy people who donate a lot of money to charities, but to actually visit third world countries, refugees, and come face to face with poverty, disease, and sadness takes a lot of courage and heart. Needy people benefit from what she's doing and that's truly admirable.
49I think it is not only good PR for AJ but also for the refugees in Thailand. Currently, this is largest refugee resettlement group coming to the states, but not many communities know that there are refugees living in their community. The primary ethnic name group is Karen and they are some of the most loving people. Yes, they have been living in the camps for a long time, some for all their life. But what is more sad is when they move to America and are treated worse than when they lived in the camps. Imagine leaving a place where all of your family and friends live, going to a place where you do not know anyone or the language. You have never worked a day in your life (because the camps don't allow it) and now you must find a job and take on responsibilities like paying bills and trying to understand public transportation. All they need is a little more community support and proper education. AJ (and those who read this), you can do just as much for this refugee community within the states, and they are all over. The largest refugee community from Thailand is living in St. Paul, MN (2,000+). Other cities are Indianapolis, Louisville, Nashville, Atlanta, Richmond, Utica, Charlotte.
