Steve Irwin, otherwise known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed today when a stringray barb caught him in the chest. Shocking news for the holiday weekend. We were thinking it would be a secret wedding, but instead we came home to hear this sad news. The 44 year old was filming a documentary when the incident occurred. He leaves behind his wife and 2 kids. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. Click here for more.

Pop has gotten her news from an aussie site! I guess our media is on the story now.
1I kind of thought of him as being invincible... This is really sad. RIP
2Wow this really sucks! But somehow i kinda saw this coming.
3Shannon, I did too. It's defiantely a shock.
4I feel bad for his family, especially his two little kids.
5Wow, such a shock. That's so sad. His poor kids and wife.
6my prayers go to his family. what a great guy.wally_*
7Its ALL over the news here in Oz. I am seriously devastated.
8so sad, and incredibly unexpected for me. rip, and my thoughts will be with his family.
9That sucks...but there was always a chance I suppose. I always thought a snake or croc would get him.
10I feel bad for his family
It's very sad news. I feel awful for Bob and Bindi. Poor kids.
11I am deeply shocked and saddened.. and my heart just breaks for his family.
12oh, wow. how sad.
i always thought he'd be a fixture, being crazy and running around getting
into tussles with crocs and other creatures for years until he had to be fitted with dentures.
rip crocodile guy
13I´m sorry for that, RIP!
14That's so sad... RIP Steve, we'll miss ya.
15RIP Steve.
16RIP!

My first thought was he was bitten by a snake or crocodile, but when my hubby told me
'stingfish' I was really really surprised/shocked. I did not see this coming at all - he was always very carefull with stunts that he did (kinda, carefull that you can be I GUESS) but they
report the stingfish just went through his chest *instant death* - I mean to me sounds safer than to play around snakes/crocodiles - he was recording a documentary
I am still so sad - I feel so sorry for his family - my son recognised him from the WIGGLES that he had
watched ...
18Wow thats entirely to sad. Poor guy and his family. Poor kids and wife. My thoughts an prayers are with him.
19Live fast, die young, he certainly accoplished alot in his lifetime. Can't say I was a big fan, but that is really so sad & his children are so young too. RIP Steve.
20That's so sad. I'm sorry for his family.
21Its just such a rare thing to occur...it makes it more sad. If it had been a croc or snake it would have been less of a shock. I feel so sorry for his family, esp. his small children
22Shout out Steve! We'll miss you! Aus Zoo won't be the same without you!
It kind of freaks me out because I just got back from diving in Cairns.
23THis is SO sad...i never thought he would die! RIP. My thoughts and prayers are with his family
so sad.
24That's very sad. He was a kind of hero. RIP Steve!
25Oh no! So it is true
I got a bulletin about this on myspace but I didn't think it was true
26My prayers are with his family. It sad that a man who wrestled with alligators and swam with sharks had to go down by a stingray. It was unfortunate and shocking. You would think he would either get attacked by an alligator or mauled by a bear or lion.
27either way, it is very sad that he is gone, i loved his show on Discovery
28I must say, being a proud australian, i am devistated. I thought he has done so much for australia in his years. For out wildlife, our Zoo's and our tourism. I wish i could make it to Australia Zoo to place some flowers down for him.
29Goodbye Steve
I'm still so sad about this. Usually when a celebrity dies, its like, "huh, what a bummer." But this is making me very sad. He just seemed like a genuinely good guy.
30It totally sucks! You always imagine a person like this will live forever. What a passion for life. At least he went out doing what he loved! Our condolences to his family!
31I was just watching some of the CNN coverage of this and was getting all weepy. I feel so bad for his family.
32It's so sad. My boys love his show. I feel terrible for his children. They are so young.
33It's so sad.. My sis and I used to watch him all the time.. I loved his shows!
34I wonder if his dying words we "Crikey!". Rest in peace Steve.
35Damn, that's a shocker. I was quite surprised when I read it first on MSNBC. I mean, at least he was doing something he loved when he died. Can't we just all wish for that? Going out strong. He probably inspired "Fear Factor" and the every so popular (I have two pairs) Crocs.
36It is sad that he got killed, but he didnt tread animals in a good way, so way should they, he was just up for sensation. As an graduated biologist, one shouldnt disturb animals in their natural habitat and that is what he did.

Is b*tching a sin?
I saw it when I woke up this morning. Crazy, but it really makes me just feel heavy and low. To only be 44!
38theotherhalfofme - this isn't a good time to be inflammatory with a comment like that.
39theotherhalfofme - Not only is that an inflammatory statement, it has very little basis in reality. Steve Irwin is a renowned conservationalist and environmentalist and the work he's done is credited with raising awareness of animals that few people cared about. He singlehandedly inspired Australian legislation *saving* the animals you claim he treated badly.
40thanks Jen, I didn't want to take the time to correct her. sheesh.
41I haven't felt this sad about the passing of a celebrity since Kurt Cobain. Not to compare, but I was a Nirvana fan. Steve Irwin was more like some kind of staple in my life. I expected to see his face here and there, and I expected to hear his voice, or someone doing an impression of it on practically a weekly basis. I guess he is one of those people playing with fire, but I always felt he had some amount of control. There are celebrities who play with fire all of the time (Pete Doherty comes to mind) but aren't doing so to contribute to the knowledge base of kids and adults alike. This sucks. It really does.
42It still doesn't seem real to me.
43SPM - I hate when people say that about him, and to say it on a thread about his tragic death was just out of line. I couldn't let it pass.
44Just thought I'd let anyone interested know that as a sign of respect to Steve if you've got msn you can put a turtle in front of your name by using the emoticon (tu)
45Don't know the exact origin but lots on my list are doing so.
I would say that in this instance, b*tching is most definitely a sin.
46noooooooo aw
rip Steve.
47Twinkle, I'd agree
48RIP
49I am sorry!! I am not saying that he deserved it!! And I dont say anything against the things he achieved!! I know that he is a well respected scientist!!
