Sean Penn passionately spoke about Milk's importance and message onstage and he continued his heartfelt thanks from the press room. He talked about Obama's need to examine his official stance on gay marriage, since the change will come, and says he hopes that the president's current stance is not a "felt one." He also spoke a bit about what it meant to take part in the project, and about his fellow nominee Mickey Rourke:

- On what the movie means to him: It means a lot to myself and everyone involved not only in the movie, but anybody who believes in equal rights for human beings. It’s really simple . . . There’s nothing more important than the themes that are in this movie. To be part of something like that is a privilege.
- On Mickey Rourke: I’ve known Mickey for over 25 years and I can't speak for [his consistency] since he's an excellent bridge burner at times, but we've had for the most part friendship. I’ve looked up to, advised, wanted to work with, admired him. He had me weeping through The Wrestler. He’s one of our most talented actors. One of the great poetic talents in acting.

2I love Sean Penn but I thought that Mickey Rourke should have won.
3Hmmm I thought Rourke was going to win. This was the only surprise for me. The rest was predictable.
4I'm so glad to see he won.
5i was hoping he'd win
6I thought Rourke was going to win.oh well...
7I thought Rourke would win but I'm so happy Penn won!
8I liked Sean's performance better and I am happy Mickey Rouke didn't win. I like him but his acceptance speech wouldn't have meant anything. I feel like Sean winning was telling the world something important bout Gay America and the importance of having equal rights. Its sooo sad that to this day all Americans are treated equally. It has to change.
9*aren't treated equally
10Rourke didn't get the Oscar...but he won.
11ehhhhh sean penn is so annoyingly annoying.
12Can't stand him.
13The Oscars are such a public forum and I'm glad he brought up the important issue (not that I'm surprised)
14WOW LoveAngelina actually wrote something intelligent that did NOT pertain to Angelina!
Anyway as I have said before I am really happy for Sean Penn!
15I was really rooting for Rourke.
Hopefully there will be a next time!
16LOL niqua230 there was nothing about Angelina in the post and I feel strongly about equal rights.
17I really wanted Mickey Rourke to win, but loved the part of Penn's acceptance speech where he acknowledged that people voted for him in spite of himself. Self-awareness in Hollywood, no matter how fleeting, is so effing refreshing.
18I was happy to see Sean win the Oscar and thought that he had one of the best speeches in the whole show. It actually made me cry.
19It was tough competition this year with many good performances. Sean was very gracious in winning.
20im happy sean won, but i was pulling for mickey. i believe sean will be nominated in the future, whereas mickey might fall off the face of the planet again. i'm sad for him!
21Biggest upset of the night. Mickey Rourke SHOULDVE won!!!!!
22Im happy someone is speaking out on this issue. How come he was there with his ex-wife?
23he and robin wright penn had reconciled a while ago which begs the question: why didn't he mention her? he should bow before her for taking him back.
24I was rooting for Mickey Rourke, I thought Penn's performance was more of a stretch but Rourkes was so subtle and (to use Penns word) poetic.
25I LOVE Sean Penn's acting. He deserved this second Oscar 110%. Although, he does have one a CRAZY relationship with his wife. I mean, he didn't even mention her in his speech, and after they called his name, she had to practically twist his face and break his neck to get him to give her a kiss before he took the stage. I wonder what the magic element is that keeps them coming back to each other.
26Sean Penn was phenomenal in Milk. His win is well deserved!
27I have to admit my bias and say that as a Gay man Dustin Lance Black's most eloquent and respectful acceptance speech had me in tears. I couldn't have said it better my self.
28Oops that was meant for another post, lol, oh well a senior moment already.
In regards to this post I felt it was between Rourk and Penn with a personal slant for Rourks performance. He really should have got that.
29If you win you should be able to say whatever you want. You deserve it!
Everything he said was true.
Whether you agree with it or not.
America is about freedom and we should all have equal rights.
(I wanted Mickey Rourke to win too.)
30I'm so glad Sean won.
