Gwyneth Paltrow has been expanding her horizons well beyond the big screen these days. The Oscar winning actress has expressed her interest in working less to remain closer to her kids and now she has found new ventures which won't take her away from home. Along with modeling contracts, cookbook deals and high end gyms, Gwyneth's Goop website has made major headlines as well as backlash. She has defended her site recently saying, "I think the people who are criticizing it or criticizing the idea of it, don't really get it, because if they did, they would like it." Paltrow will continue to educate her subscribers with ideas on travel, food, religious wisdom and diet cleanses, making this mom a woman of all trades. So, tell us — do you buy Gwyneth as the next lifestyle guru?

She's doing something for fun and reading it is optional... I think she gets too much criticism. She can be obnoxious from time to time but who isn't?
1i absolutely LOVE goop. i would definitely listen to her because she has access to the best resources. why are peopl hating on her so much?! i tried the detox, restaurants, recipes she recommended and they're all fabulous!
2I would have voted yes but the tag takes it to far...she will NEVER be close to Martha or Oprah. Not to me anyway. However I do think a rich, pretty woman like her could be good for some useful advice. I won't deny that. Gwen does have a good figure, she knows alot about certain foods. So I would totally read her website. If people don't like her site they shouldn't read it.
3If or when I seek information on travel, food, religious wisdom and diet cleanses, I would seek it from people more qualified, not some poptart actress who is so self absorbed that she thinks anyone who doesn't agree with her ideas must be incapable of "getting" it.
4She has always been rich. She has always been privileged. She has no concept of regular people's lives. Take advice from HER? I don't think so.
5What Gwyneth doesn't seem to get is how condescending she comes across at times. She really does act like she's above it all, like she's discovered some secret the rest of us aren't in on. As far as GOOP goes, often her recommendations are geared more for other rich people, not a middle-class person, for instance. She has an "amazing life", yes, and not all of us can recreate that, which is why we get turned off when she tells us what Louis Vuitton man purse we should buy for our husband's Christmas gift or whatever.
But, of course, she's allowed branch out and do whatever makes her happy. And the rest of us don't have to read GOOP if it bothers us.
6I don't know what the big criticism is about. It seems like a pretty harmless website.
7Like the NY times article said, I think she is too "to the manor born". I think it is nice that she wants to share her knowledge, and I think that it is coming from a good place, but I don't think she really understands what life is like for us normal folk.
A writer for The Globe and Mail in Toronto got it right when they said she named the website Goop because ‘Learn From Me, Ungrateful Peasant’ was taken.
8In defense of Gwyneth, I've come to believe that everything she does, she's doing because she really thinks her advice can and will help everyone. What she doesn't know is that because of the privileged life that she has always led what she says often comes off as condescending or looking down on others and thinking she's above. I don't actually think she believes she's above anyone. As some one who, although not possibly as privileged monetarily as Gwyneth, has been thought of in the same regard, I thought I should defend her.
9I voted "yes" just because she's dispensing her advice and thoughts as Gwyneth Paltrow the actress/human being, not as Gwyneth Paltrow the Diet Professional or some other title she hasn't done anything to earn.
10I think people just allow this whole "your rich, I am poor" or "your beautiful and I am the average looking person" to really get in the way of true knowledge exchange. If you think Gwen is not focusing on the reality of other situations then writing to her on her website or someone posting an open letter, someone explaining certain things to Gwen might be better then just out right criticism and being mean.
11I recently visited her site for the first time for the sole purpose of educating myself before I snarked on it and her. But a funny thing happened: I found it it's actually really cool! Touche.
12ugh she is so condescending and annoying i would never take advice from her.
13Sorry, but she has not worked for anything she's got. She might want us to follow her lifestyle, but shies away when the paps are after her? The fact that she thinks that people want to live their lives as modeled by her show that she is naive to the world, and not everyone has a famous, rich mommy. Plus, I like my men hetero, I don't have lesbian tendencies(maddonna), and I don't enjoy eating every 12 hours. No thanks, gweny.
14She is definitely my style idol and I love most everything that she is involved in. I don't think she's the next Oprah or Martha, but I think she makes a valuable contribution and I'm here to read all about it.
15she looks amazing
16I think this mostly boils down to jealously. If Gwyneth were ugly and fat we would not have a problem with her website. I have actually made several of her recipes from GOOP and they are all unbelievably fantastic!
P.S. Is Martha Stewart's advice pragmatic? Some of her craft ideas are so insane--like who has time to make pinecone candlesticks.
17I think she means well, but she can definitely come off as condescending when she espouses advice on how to lead a better life when she hasn't experienced or gone through the problems that a lot of "normal" do on a daily basis.
I also take excpetion with her exercise advice because it is wrong and misleading. The girl has good genes and her approach to exercise obviously works for her but most people are not that privilged to be naturally tall and skinny which can set a lot of people up for failure. There are a lot of experts who disagree with her advice but unfortunately there are also a lot of people who look to celebrities for advice on that kind of thing.
And furthermore the comment that "I think the people who are criticizing it or criticizing the idea of it, don't really get it, because if they did, they would like it." is ridiculously self centered. People can disagree with you but it doesn't mean they don't get it. It is comments like these that make people think she is a self centered a-hole. If she had simply said, "well some people dont like what I am trying to do with my website but that's ok everyone is entitled to their own opinion" people may be less inclined to be critical.
18I don't understand what is so horrible about someone sharing what they enjoy as far as food and travel and also sharing what has worked for them in improving their life.
19It's also condescending and insulting to suggest that people who don't view Gwyneth as a lifestyle guru are simply jealous. Talk about not getting it!
When people reject someone as a role model, it's because they DON'T want to be like them. I feel sorry for people who flock to celebrities for advice as if they are some sort of enlightened human being.
At least Martha Stewart worked her way up from catering and decorating, wrote many books on cooking, gardening, wedding planning, etc., before she was considered a lifestyle guru. (Yes, we all know she has lots of staff to help.) But even Martha Stewart seems more down to earth, humble, and in touch as a human than Gwyneth.
20What's the big deal? She's not hurting anyone. Good for her.
21I voted no. She said she started the website because her friends were constantly asking for her advice, etc. Plenty of celebrities have blogs about what they like to buy and eat (Mindy Kaling, Brooke Burke) but Gwyneth's is so condescending. It's an interesting read and I think she means well. She just doesn't get how she comes across to people.
22i want to like what she says but it's just not me. it's hard to really take the advice from people that just don't have my life.
23I'd actually prefer the response to read:
No — I don't get her grand plans and she should...retire from "acting" too.
24Cute bag!
25omg i am so jellus of her so i wud never read her blog. lol
seriously, the jealousy card? are we in high school?
26I really hate when people say "you don't get it" or "you're just jealous." God forbid there be an actual difference of opinion.
I have no opinion on her as a lifestyle guru, I've never read her stuff and I have no intention of doing so. Mostly because anyone who disagree with on anything at all just "doesn't get it."
27I subscribe to Goop because I have a love/hate with Gwynnie. Some tips are really good but others...it's so unrealistic. Which is the part I don't think she gets. Oprah's and Martha's tip and ideas are generally attainable for the masses. Gwyn's are sometimes way too pretentious.
28I just want to punch her in the face. Mean and irrational but that's really all she inspires me to do. If I want to know what lettuce to buy I can get that information without a side of "look at me, I'm so much better than you" which is how GP comes across.
29I don't get why this should bother people. If it's what she wants to do then fine. People can do what they want with their lives after all. And if you don't like it, well, then don't go to the site, it's as simple as that isn't it? "She should stick to acting", what kind of comment is that? Other people can't tell her what to do or don't do.
30I think that when people get angry towards someone's advice or opinion simply because they don't agree versus just shrugging it off because it isn't helpful is more of a therapy issue.
It's lifestyle tips not psychotherapy; so sure I'm going to check it out but, not to rely on her to be my role model or pastor or fill in for an absent parent or something.
31I love her "goop" postings. appreciate learning what interests her and what works for her life, as well as her recommendations. she's cool and smart.
32I love Goop. To hell with anyone who doesn't. If you don't like her postings, don't read them! Apparently, women like Gwyneth should be criticized because they are classy and have happy lives.
33I went to her website a few months ago and really enjoyed it. It's completely out of the box, which is probably why she's getting such hateful comments. kudos to her for doing something inspiring and revealing her personal life.
34The fact Gwynnie has no concept or clue of why a website such as hers geared towards wealthy self-indulgence might be met with anything less than glorious glowing praise, appreciation and admiration...when this country in is the midst of an terrible economic crisis and regular, hardworking people are losing jobs and families are losing their homes left and right..is either very amusing to me, or rather sickening. I haven't decided which.
35Hell. No. When did she get so &%^$& annoying?!
36I've visited her site and wanted to try one of her recipes - turkey meatballs - but it said to heat it on a large Dutch oven (what, the????). Why not just say oven? That's where the pretentious comes in. A bit of a turn off for me. It certainly isn't for the average middle class. And as for travel tips, I doubt the hotels she lists are on expedia.com. Sorry, Gwynny, I just don't have the trust fund or bank account to read your newsletters. Maybe some day .....
37A dutch oven is just a casserole dish with a lid that's oven-proof. You put it in a regular oven.
I've used Martha's tips for years and I've never lived off more than 30K a year. That was when I was 'wealthy' lol You just modify it.
Honestly, you'd think this Popsugar brainwashing to look like stars and love them when they absolutely suck would offend you more.
38It's all a joke. When it's not entertaining you; just don't participate. Crime in Italy!
A Dutch oven is a particular kind of pot (thick cast iron with a lid) and is a common thing for amateur home cooks to use--not at all a form of condescension. The meatballs are wonderful, as are her banana nut muffins and her caramlized black pepper chicken.
If you don't like her advice don't visit her website--it's a choice not a requirement. I love GOOP. Her recipes are some of the best I have ever tried. I don't think she's going to appeal to everyone but I don't think that is what she is trying to do anyways.
I mean, Conde Nast Traveler, Vogue, and Food & Wine magazines are so super snobby (almost everything in those mags are out of my price range), but lots of people like reading those publications. So why is Gwyneth talking about upscale food, travel, shopping such a big deal?
39I think goop is fun and a nice collaboration - she never says this IS THE WAY she gathers info and the puts it out there. I like her fashion and finding out info on what she gets is fun... I'd love to know what bag she's carrying now
40If or when I seek information on travel, food, religious wisdom and diet cleanses, I would seek it from people more qualified, not some poptart actress who is so self absorbed that she thinks anyone who doesn't agree with her ideas must be incapable of "getting" it.
Right on!
41Well there you go. Cooking and Goop .... totally over my head.
42It's hard to take her seriously .. anyone who is THATCLOSE to Madonna is immediately suspect.
master cleanse?? i.e. massive enema and no food?? yeah, bring it
but I guess it's ok, because she admits that "yes, I lead a fantastic, privileged life" -- like when Steven Spielberg (a/k/a "Uncle Morty") granted her her first movie role as a teenager in his adaptation of Peter Pan, simply because she was his friend's daughter. ... life's been rough for her
but I totally love how she's done depriving the world of her fabulousness .. we need more 'advice' from over-privileged, faux-accented, globe-trotting celebutards.
43Ugh. How can she be a "lifestyle guru" when she doesn't live anything that resembles a normal lifestyle?
44Didn't she say "I can't PRETEND to be somebody who earns $25,000 a year" ?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02052009/entertainment/the_girl_who_fell_to_...
I now officially HATE her.
45i dont know about that but i looooove her outfit.
46I was just looking at GOOP earlier today.
I read a lot of blogs and the problem w/ this one... is the articles are to short.
There isn't any substance to the entries.
Just my opinion.
47I like the idea of her blog. I've only perused some of it. I feel that she is just giving people insight to her perspective and opinions--very typical for a blog. I don't feel that she's overtly snobby or anything but I don't really pay attention to what she says in interviews. I admire her acting, style, and husband.
Generally, I always welcome suggestions about places to eat or things to wear--that's why I joined this site. Sure, I'm no millionaire, but that doesn't mean I can't have nice things or eat at nice places sometimes
. After all, I can hardly afford anything Elle or Vogue
showcases or recommends.
And as many have mentioned, her entries are brief and optional reads. I don't think I'll be subscribing, but its existence doesn't bother me either.
48NO WAY! She is so duplicitous and greedy. Working in the business and working at MMX I know her MO. She's a backstabber.
49I think guru is the wrong word.. She's found some things that work for her and she just wants to share it like everyone else on the internet.
