After Ben Stiller's hilarious impersonation of Joaquin Phoenix at the Oscars last weekend, the debate about Joaquin's rap career is continuing to heat up. Sources close to Joaquin claim that the whole thing is part of a project he's working on about the importance of appearances in Hollywood and that he's happy that Ben and other actors are giving him attention. On the other hand, many are speculating that Joaquin is mentally ill, though his rep has deemed those rumors to be inappropriate. Only time will tell whether or not Joaquin is just playing a trick on us but tell us — do you think his rap career is a hoax?
Even Joaquin should know that things like this usually backfire, and his career and reputation probably won't recover from it. I think it may have started as a joke or side interest, but it's turned into something else.
If you haven't caught on by now, the deal is that it's an elaborate prank. He's faking having a nervous breakdown and Casey Affleck is filming it. It's been cited many times that Casey has been following him to all of these "performances".
It's totally put on. Casey is Joaquin's best friend and brother-in-law and if Joaquin was on drugs or mentally ill, I really doubt that Casey would be enabling his behavior.
I don't know how this will end, but I see it backfiring too.
That's what I understand MeowAlyCat. Joaquin seems too smart and talented to make a sudden turn and act like a mumbling confused freak anyway.
Personally I find it awkward to watch and I don't think its funny.
So I cant see the "biography" skit movie being anything I would be interested in.
I think he went crazy, only time will tell.
I don't see it as a joke and if it is, it's not really funny...well Ben Stiller making fun of him at the Oscars was lol.
LOL I hope its a joke. I mean he can be weird...and thats not bad but he isn't a psycho. I think Joaquin is awesome.
I also hope this is a joke. If it's not he is following the footsteps of his late brother.
It's hard to say because of how his older brother ended up. If it is, it's not funny.
I'm sticking with its a joke all the way. They're making a mockumentary and i cannot wait to see the end product
I think it's a joke, but unfortunately not a very funny one and it's gone on too long. Now most people have heard that they are making this film project, so it's lost any surprise value. It feels like we've already seen a lot of the footage as it happened.
The success of Ashton Kutcher's punked was that they did the reveal quickly and moved on.
I don't listen to rap anymore so it really doesn't matter to me. Last time I checked he's American, live the dream, he's still free to do what he wants. Why should we care? he's not paying our bills. lol
I think it's a joke at Joaquin's expense. Just b/c he's famous does not make him exempt from mental problems. He is prob more at risk b/c people prob yes him to death. I bet in his mind he does have a hip-hop career ahead of him. I hope he doesn't attempt it publicly. I think a lot of people would watch just to laugh at him. I hope he gets the help he needs. He used to be so charming.
Well if it's a joke, I don't get why he would be so unprofessional at premiere of a film that he's starring in. He's been so aloof on talk shows and interviews. How long can he keep this going? I have doubts that this is a joke.
I just don't think your brother-in-law would be following you around with a camera if it truly was a mental breakdown. I would hope your sister (esp after looking one brother too young) would step in... And Casey Affleck just doesn't seem like enough of a d-bag to prosper from a friend's insanity.
The whole things is a bit too weird - whether it is a joke or insanity. Why would you intentionally jeporadize your career just to joke around?
well the joke is on all of us, because regardless of it being a big hoax or not -- it was a great ploy to get back into the news. and how smart he must be because look at all of us talking about him now and look at all of the press he's gotten from this.
yes, i'm convinced that it's a Borat type stunt that he's doing. we'll all see i'm sure.
I want to believe it's a joke -- not a funny one, by the way. But I read a "blind item" on Ted Casablanca's blog and it sounded so much like him...if he's into really heavy stuff I can't help but thinking about what happened to River Phoenix.
I can't decide. But, if it's a joke, it's not funny.
He has enough credibility as an actor that he wouldn't need to pull a stunt to get media attention. His own acting career has always been noteworthy enough and aside from some 2008 press appearances where he seemed under the influence of something and a bit disheveled, I've seen mostly just positive press about him up until now.
I agree with Joygirl and Allyace... the involvement of Casey Affleck makes me thing it's a mockumentary of some sort, because I just don't see him as the type of person who would actually stand by and film his brother in law losing his mind.
C'mon Casey Affleck filming the whole thing makes it into a farce. I mean it's being referred to as "mockumentary" everywhere. You don't make such a complete turnaround in personality without some kind of mental illness and I should hope (and pray) that those around him would recognize this, should that be the case. But I seriously doubt that's the case. Joaquin is a fab actor and knows how to play the role of nutcase with a straight face. I have a feeling he's trying to make some kind of statement about the masses buying into anything with a "name" attached to it.
Andy Kauffman did this years ago. David Letterman seemed insulted when Joaquin came on his show. It's NOT funny, if people aren't in on the joke!!!!!!!
I was over it even before it started. It's stupid and a waste of everyone's time.
what a wierdo
honestly i hope he is joking because i would be so f*cking anger if he is pulling a River Phoenix. i dont know if i can handle another Mr. Phoenix passing away.

He is totally in my league now!! Hooraaaah!
Joaquin, call me!
