Gisele Bundchen looked gorgeous, glamorous and feisty in the pages of the June issue of Harper's Bazaar. This isn't the only place that the supermodel has put up her dukes recently -- Gisele was ready to fight for women's rights in a recent interview about the birth control laws in her home country of Brazil. She stood up against the country's health ministers call for a referendum banning abortion saying, "If [a woman] thinks she doesn't have the money or the emotional condition to raise a child, why should she give birth?" She also was outspoken in support of national anti-AIDS programs which hand out thousands of free condoms and have recently come under fire from the church, "It's ridiculous to ban contraceptives -- you only have to think of the diseases that are transmitted without them. I think it should be compulsory to use a contraceptive." Brava to Gisele for standing up for what she believes in.

while i don't agree with abortion i feel every person should have the right to choose.
1Say what you want about her but that girl knows how to fierce it up. That said, she should definitely be commended for articulating on her opinions without sounding like a total douchebag (cough Ben cough).

16I don't think people realize how strong she is to take such a bold (pro-choice) stand in Brazil. Although it has a reputation for being sexually liberal, it's still *very* macho in terms of its culture (Women are here to be controlled by men, basically). For her to say she's pro-choice is crazy to me. What courage.

I am not at all religious, but I don't know of anyone - pro or con - who brushes off a 4 month old heart-pumping fetus as "almost nothing...like a small grain". Makes her sound like a superficial bubblehead who hasn't really thought this through.
pardon me for jumping to assumptions about her, but i never thought she had a deep thought. glad i've been proven wrong.
26annie: of course animals kill their offspring. happens all the time. they will kill one or all of a litter, or look the other way while the stronger offspring kill the weaker. let me know if you need specific examples.

34I agree with abortion being legal, simply because if it is banned, there are women that will take unsafe measures to have one anyway, and possibly end up dead.
In a weird way, what she is saying about the 4 month thing is not that crazy, the medical society as a whole puts limits on abortions that are a certain amount of time through the pregnancy. I beleive the general consesnus is about 5 months. Most abortion performing doctors will not touch a woman in the middle of her second trimester, unless there is a clear medical problem, so I think it is for Gisele to have a medical opinion if everyone else can.
I actually commend her for even having an opinion and being open about it. Someone will always have another view, that is what life is about.

I've seen documentaries how women died trying to get abortion when it was illegal in this country. I would not like to go back to that. It's brave of her to take a stand vs the church and the macho culture of latin America. She seems to get in a lot of trouble, but i guess that's to be expected when one speaks one's mind like she does. Give'em hell girl.

42I have a weird approach to this. I am pro choice also but only because of the lenghts some women will go to doing it on their own if it were to become illegal. However, I would never do that and bring that guilt into my life because of being careless and irresponsible.

45Well i do believe in what she's saying on both matters, i believe a woman should choose if she wants a child or not,there are tooooo many, millions of children that have no parents across the world, living on the streets eating garbage,scavaging for food with no one to take care of them and that makes me sick..how these ppl go and get pregnant give birth and just leave these kids to fend for themselves, some unfortunately (the women) are raped, molested and have no choice but to have the child especially when they have no way in taking care of them..i'm one of those that say if you cant support it and give it what it needs, dont have it, not saying just because you dont have money, you shouldnt have a child..sometimes it's a good struggle, sometimes not..every person that has a child is NOT a good parent/person and many should NOT be able to have children cause they are too wicked and sick in the head and the stuff they put their kids through..so noone shouldnt have to be scared of getting into trouble by not having it, besides having a baby is dangerous to the woman too. The contraceptives i agree with too! sometimes "the church" (some gives others a bad name)makes me so sick at times, for a simple condom they act like its so bad! they always seem to be in denial. Brazil got many issues like others especially with the racism thing..who would have thought, seemed so together, well always tackle issues more likely to change. I like what she's doing, not just a pretty face with no purpose or care
