Drew Barrymore hit the streets of LA yesterday to protest the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8. She took the stage at a rally, saying, "I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay. No one has any right to tell anyone what makes a family . . . You choose your battles in this world . . . this is something that means everything to me." It's obviously a cause close to Drew's heart, and she was joined for the afternoon of activism by fellow celebs like Pete Wentz, Emmy Rossum, and Kelly Osbourne.
To see more of Drew, as well as Pete, Kelly, and Haylie Duff, just read more.

Go Drew
This is why I love her.
1Interesting that many straight celebrities came out to help with the rally but VERY few of the homosexual ones came... I don't know what I think about that.
2Go Drew!! Well said!!
3Drew is bisexual, isn't she?

Lance Bass, Ellen DeGeneres and Kathy Griffin have all voiced their disapproval at California officials' decision to uphold the state's gay marriage ban.
On Tuesday, the California Supreme Court opted not to overturn the ruling which came into effect under the Proposition 8 legislation late last year - six months after gay marriages were declared legal.
And celebrities, both gay and straight, have made it known how strongly they disagree with the current law.
Gay singer Lance Bass released a statement, saying, "I can only hope to one day live in a country that grants equal rights, opportunity, and freedom to all citizens."
And DeGeneres, who married her partner Portia de Rossi just before the ruling was overturned, believes it will be looked back on with contempt in the future.
She says, "I'm sure you heard the Prop 8 news. One day when everyone is treated with full equality, we'll look back and realise how wrong this was."
And comedian Kathy Griffin spoke of her pride in her grandmother who took to the streets to protest Proposition 8.
She explains, "My 89 year old mother has asked me to get her a wheelchair to take her to a protest tonight, even though she isn't in the greatest of health.
"She is neither gay, nor the parent of a gay person, but she is as passionate about this decision as I am. I am so proud to march with her. Shame on the CA Supreme Court for this decision that history will not look back on fondly."
(from imdb)
so gay celebs speak out too, maybe they will attend another rally.
4It shouldn't go without a fight, keep up the fight!
5How could I have voted Yes on 8, what was I thinking.....Kelly, Drew and Pete are such positive influences. I much change my mind now! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe a man, a woman and a dog should have the right to marry next. Why not? Or a man, a man and another man, why not? Equal rights! Right?!?!?!?
6i dont suport this........ha....ha.
7i do not agree with same sex marriage
8I was going to report yvetteava's comment because its quite possibly the most ignorant thing I've heard in quite a while. But then I decided that more people should enjoy reading how absolutely embarrased I am for her and her small minded views. How you are able to walk outside your house and feel a sense of belonging when apparently anything outside of your small little bubble of normal is scary or out to destroy you is beyond me. I pity your children for the hate and fear that you will raise them in. And you will.
Not agreeing with it is fine. I don't agree in getting married, popping out 2 kids and then getting divorced. But hey, I can't try and stop that from happening any more than you can stop people from loving other people. But oh how you will try.
9Emily Rossum is both gorgeous and talented and now also a supporter. You've got to love her.
10Braindiesel,
Obviously you know I have a very good point or you would have not been so bothered my my post. I feel sorry for you and how ignorant you are. Trust me, things like that will be next. We live in a very dark world. Fortunately, my President Barack Obama believes in marriage between a man and woman ONLY. Thank God for him!
11Oh yah. Great points were made in your post.
12love u Brian!
13Go Briandiesel!
14I just don't understand why people are so worried about what other people do.
15Why are these homophobes so bothered if gay people want to marry?
It's none of their business.
Will the sky turn black &the oceans dry up if gays are allowed to marry? I just don't understand the closed mindedness & stupidity.
It's discrimination pure and simple.
ditto briandiesel!! more power to you.
how is discriminating against disabled people or people of color any different than discriminating against gay people? people will look back on this in 50 years and feel embarrassed!
16The people have spoken. It would be a sad day in America if 9 judges thought they could make law--that is not their job. The CASC upheld the will of the people. The only way to change it now is for gay families to be good examples. That means more Ellen and less Perez Hilton. You don't get anywhere by being mean and calling those that disagree with you *unt and *itch. That only makes people go in the other direction.
17The government should not be involved with marriage of any sort. I have my opinion on the matter but it's for me. What other people do is their affair. It doesn't affect me one way or the other. I'm just glad that the activist court did not overturn the will of the people. If you people in Cali want same sex marriage then vote on it again...and again...and again. What will be funny is when this mess passes, who will be able to say that it is wrong for a guy to marry three women? If tradition is going to be thrown out then who is to say that three people marrying is wrong? Hopefully not those against prop 8. Wouldn't want them to be hypocrites.
18And once again (some) blog comments travel the low road...
I agree with them. Snarky me says drew looks old. Too old to be dressing like a 12 year old.
19I read these comments and it's amazing how things have changed. It's like gay is the new southern baptist. If you are against gay marriage then you're the one damned to hell by the people who don't believe homosexuals are damned to hell.
20I couldn't care less which two grown people get married, it doesn't affect my life personally, but I'm an American and I believe in democracy. You asked for a vote, you got a vote. You asked for an appeal, you got a decision. It didn't go the way you want so you protest and bully people who don't agree and voice their opinion? That's not democracy... that's terrorism.
And 'Taylor' isn't gay or curious... by the way *I'm sure, I just asked myself*
21oh and i wanna see better pictures of haylie's new nose and chin.
22Yup, we will vote again and again and again. Keep spending money false propaganda. I don't care.
23You people spouting ideas of tradition, culture, etc. - whatever. I just thank my lucky stars that I wasn't born in the era where it is tradition for a woman's occupation to be limited to staying in a house.
You can't have your cake and eat it too - you have yours, now let other people have the right to pursue freedom and happiness.
correction: Keep spending money *ON* false propaganda.
24I should not even be giving this a second thought but...
@ Pensapink. "I read these comments and it's amazing how things have changed. It's like gay is the new southern baptist. If you are against gay marriage then you're the one damned to hell by the people who don't believe homosexuals are damned to hell."
I wonder what you would have thought about the Million Man March.
And "terrorism"? You say that with such frivolity; you are living in a sheltered world, my friend.
25Ist: we're not friends.
2nd: you really want attention.
3rd: I'm not gay, black or a California and my comment is the extent of my interest.
Peace!
26I agree with the ban. I do support homosexuals if that is their choice, but I believe a marriage should only occur between a man and woman.
27Oh, and you'll have to ask my ex-husband about the million man march... cause I wasn't invited.
28Drew is wearing the same makeup from the Laker game......marriage is between a man and a woman.
29It is amazing to me just how little some of you people know about law and rights and oppression. Equality for a minority has always come through our courts because it's oh so perfectly clear that the ignorant majority is totally incapable of being kind and compassionate to anyone outside their own little bubble of narcissism.
The majority do not get to dictate what rights they'd like to strip away from the minority. Thomas Jefferson made that clear when he said, "All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression."
As it stands, we do not have equal rights. Our rights are being violated every damn day. The 14th Amendment isn't just for some people. Read the language. It's for all of us. That includes those of us who are gay . . . whether you bigots like it or not. What don't you people understand about this? This has nothing to do with your bloodthirsty religious dogma. And, aside from a few lines in a 2000 year old book, what reason do you have for denying us the same rights you have? Try to answer that without saying something stupid.
This whole idea of protecting marriage, defending marriage is so completely asinine. What are you people protecting? A good majority of heterosexuals who want to preserve marriage are on their second, third, fourth go rounds. You get married in Vegas on a whim, get it annulled the next day, you cheat on each other, you beat each other, you marry and divorce like crazy, you kill each other, you use your children as pawns to hurt each other . . . so, really. Please enlighten me. What could we do to make a bigger mockery of the "tradition of marriage" than you people already have? Give it up. If marriage is under attack, you have no one to blame but yourselves.
Our day is coming. History is on our side. The Constitution is on our side. A good number of people who are heterosexual and Christian are on our side. Like it or not, we deserve the same rights as you and we will have them.
30Well, I'm terrorized!! That moving, judgment laden speech would sure make me vote your way! Oh, I'm not a California resident... sorry.
31But after that, I'm not sure why anyone would get married.
Give me a break: Your thoughts are so all over the place and illogical and irrational it's hard to know where to begin. You make broad, sweeping statements about people and turn around and complain that the same is being done to you. It is you who doesn't know anything about the law, clearly. Read the constitution. Read the oath all judges must take. The people had a right to vote, and the judges upheld that right. Gays have the same protections as every other citizen. BUT--you can't just go willy nilly changing the definition of marriage. PERIOD. Gays cannot-- and by a large percentage-- DO NOT reproduce or adopt. That is what marriage is all about, giving families a unique place in society. Those without children are just not in the same situation and don't face the same struggles. Children are the future of our society, and by extension, families ( i.e., man, woman, child) are accorded particular legal protections to secure our futures.
32Ok, okay... that was condescending and passive-aggressive... I apologize gay people.
33Maybe they should get some rainbow colored afro picks and get a group together called the 'Pink Panthers'. I'm just saying!! It worked black people. The Million Happy Marchers March?
Just trying to be helpful.
It's really kind of sad that you're not bright enough to see that I don't care what way you'd vote. I don't care where you live. I don't care about any of your insipid little attempts at cleverness and sarcasm. The fact is, if marriage is in danger, the straight people put it there. You can't blame us for killing something we aren't allowed to go near. So vote however you want. Believe whatever you want. Be as ignorant as you possibly can. We'll be over here moving forward and living our lives regardless of how much effort some people put into stopping us.
34I agree with PensaPink and Braindiesel.
I really do not comprehend why some people are so against gay marriage. How does two gay people marrying effect you? What are you so afraid of? And please do not say that legalizing gay marriage will prompt people to marry dogs. Canada has legalized gay marriage and there are certainly no dog marriages there.
I understand that certain religions prohibit homosexuality, but America is supposed to be a country with freedom of religion.
35Marriage is now defined by the ability to produce or raise children? Then you got bigger problems than gay marriage. You got a lot of childless heterosexual couples to deal with. Quick, go stop them before they make your ridiculously narrow definition of marriage look foolish.
36I meant I agree with ferret*
37I could be ignorant... but I'm ignorant with three really, really smart kids.
Pushed
'em out myself!
And it's hilarious that you'd chose to be snide to the one person who isn't gay who thinks you should be able to marry your gay partner.
38Reading comprehension doesn't count as being smat'... that'd make you and your buddy geniuses.
Anonymous sure has a lot of names...
39Just get a membership it's FREE! ... you don't have to hide in the closet.
40we can only hope that with all the support that Prop 8 is getting from the public that the politicians will soon begin to listen. i just don't get what their issues are - especially in cali - aside from what they believe FOR THEMSELVES religiously.
41Pete should stay home. Pete drinks his own urine and he thinks the gays want him on their side? nobody wants Pete the pee drinker on their side.
42Actually, I was assuming everyone would know I was the same poster regardless of the little name box. I used the same email for all three comments so hiding wasn't my intention. I don't see much point in making an account on a site that has posters who think it's their duty to not only disapprove of my life, but to actively encourage the systematic stripping of my rights.
Face it. It's discrimination. Straight Americans are not limited by the same laws as me. My freedom is limited because of gender. Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with me as a person. And, frankly, gay rights aside, I find that dangerous. The government is allowed to place restrictions on something as basic as marriage based only on gender.
This isn't about marrying children or your sister or your dog. All those arguments are completely idiotic and we've all heard them a million times. The only reason that two consenting, tax paying adult citizens can't get married is because of their gender.
Oh, and for the record? I know many lesbians who have smart children and they pushed them out themselves so I'm not really sure what point you were trying to make with that silly little remark.
43I like seeing people like Drew supporting the fight for equal rights. I agree with Ellen DeGeneres in thinking that down the road, we'll look back and wonder how LGBT Americans were once denied the same rights as everyone else.
44Ridiculously narrow definition of marriage??? Listen, we have dictionaries for a reason. Words mean something. Words have definitions. Just because a group wants to come along and change a definition, doesn't mean it's going to happen. Ridiculous, indeed. Your post gives credence to the folks who think the next thing we know, there will be people out there wanting to redefine it again.
45Marriage = one man + one woman, whether you like it or not.
I have had more than my share of heartbreaking crushes on gay guys because many are so fricking cute, sensitive, helpful, generous, warm and have qualities I like in a man. As friends: wonderful. I wish they could just get all of the rights without having to go through all of this rigamarole.
Selfishly, I wish they would turn their backs on being gay so that I could have a go with the one's I would like to date, I do not want to see them suffer as I know people that I like very much who are gay.
Also, if I had a mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter who were gay, I would want them to have all of the rights that everyone else had and not be treated differently.
Love bears up through anything and everthing.
46Whatsher/his name: "I know many lesbians who have smart children and they pushed them out themselves so I'm not really sure what point you were trying to make with that silly little remark."
>There was no point really, I just needed to get down to your level to speak the same inane language. But in all fairness, she did need a male counterpart in some way or another.
More importantly...if you reread this thread you'll find your namecaller and finger pointer, and down-right ghettofabulous debater. It has a few names.
Therein lies your biggest obstacle to prove your 'oppressors' wrong.
47I agree Iris: I used to like Justin Timberlake and Neil Patrick Harris until it became obvious.
48It's like Damn! another one!
Although, once I'm aware (or if they'd just not pose in the first place) zero interest.
Wait I agree a little... the guys who are in no way appearing gay (the down-low guys) are the ones that hurt my feelings... the other guys, well, it's kind of like being interested as a female.
49okay... I need to go watch the guys building the house up the street.
