After watching Cameron on her world tour in a variety of fabulous dresses, we now find her in Peru - in hiking gear with no makeup! While it's cool to see her being all earthy for a special TV show that celebrates Peru's culture, Cameron made one major fashion faux-pas - sporting a bag that was printed with Mao Zedong's slogan "Save The People." Apparently, many of the Peruvian natives took offense to the statement and Cameron was quick to apologize for her mistake. She said,
"I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it."
"I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history."
Cameron sounds sincerely sorry, so hopefully the people of Peru found it in their hearts to forgive her. That being said, Cameron should probably stick with a stylist for the next few months.

Cameron is beautiful !!!
1I apologize for my ignorance - I'll google it in a moment, but I am not sure I understand why a slogan that says "Save the People" is offensive?
2Okay before someone comments how stupid she is, she's another dumb blonde or how American of her for being culturally insensitive, ask this to yourself:
Did you know the history between China and Peru before reading this post?
3Where's Nya?! This is a prime example of what ticks her off, people doing charity work in a country that they have no clue of, in this case, I would have to agree
4I wouldn't have thought it offensive either. Just because they are natives without the "luxuries" we have??? Maybe they thought it was suggesting she assumed they wanted to be like her?
5pinkflats, I think the big thing Pink is that she was there doing charity work on the very thing that her purse is the antithesis of, I am a Cameron D fan, and yes I already knew of the situation in Peru before I read this post
6I will say that no, I do not know the history between China and Peru so I would have just as easily made the same mistake without meaning to.
7She wasn't doing charity work, she was working on a tv show.
And pop, the slogan was "serve the people", not "save the people".
A lot of people aren't aware of the Shining Path insurgence. She probably should have done a little research before carrying a bag emblazoned with a communist slogasn on it, though.
8Oops.
It was an honest mistake. She apologized. So it goes.
9i'd have to say i had no idea about the situation between china and peru either before this, i'll admit my ignorance too!
10I honestly do not know the history of China and Peru, but I do know that China is communist and that bag looks as if it it has a communistic message, to be totally honest.
11and yea i understand how it could be offensive- but honestly, i don't research all my purchases- even if i buy them while touristing in a foreign country. honest mistake- she sounded contrite!
12It shows she doesn't read a lot, lol. Sorry it does, but hey it's forgivable. Anyone could have made that mistake. Anyway I'm sure she means well and she really meant it when she said she's sorry. I love diaz.
13I think what she did wasn't intentionally to hurt the locals. So she gets a pass to me.
But if she gets a tattoo in a different language thinking it meant "peace not war" but in actuality it means "dog piss" then i'll have to change my mind about her.
14Ok, this is blown a little out of proportion, no? I think you could be very well of the social and political history of any given country and still inadvertently wear a t-shirt or some be-sloganed garment or accessory that causes offense to somebody somewhere. She simply picked up a practical bag for her hike, she made a mistake, quickly followed by a very sincere sounding apology and that's that. I don't think having a stylist on hand would have helped matters, I don't think they do too much political research when they're choosing stuff for their clients.
15I disagree that this is proof that she doesn't read a lot - I read all the time - I am constantly in the middle of more than one book; but I didn't understand this until looking it up specifically. I think it is silly to expect someone to research every single purchase they make. No one knows absolutely everything and everyone makes mistakes.

16Knowing the history between China & Peru, I can see how the people of Peru would be offended.
Next time she visits a foreign country, and she purchases something with writing she doesn't understand, she should ask someone what it says before buying it, so she doesn't end up with a bag that says "Serve The People" on it!
17Ouch. That's awkward.
18when you travel to other countries, I honestly think when you make a purchase that has something to do with communism, it may not be a great idea to wear it in another country where you do not know the countries history, but that is just me, and the way I think. I would not go to Cuba and make a purchase with a political message and go to another country and wear it unless I really knew what it meant, , but that is me. I actually like to know exactly what the symbol or emblem means that I am wearing.
19I knew the history before this story popped up. & I gotta say, she really should have known that a bag with a Communist slogan on it would have offended many Peruvians.
20Although it would have been FAR worse if she had been there for charity work.
ditto mar. I love my Che shirt but I'd be damn careful wearing it in a foriegn country, esp in South America
21I agree - totally forgivable.
22I would have been clueless too...poor Cameron...
23ok I'm confused I thought the t.v. show was about young community leaders helping their respective countries...is that not a form of charity work?
24This, to me, displays the ignorance of Hollywood celebrities. I don't expect for them to kow the detailed internatinal history of every nation they visit, but I do expect for any person to realize the offensive nature of Communist garb. Communism isn't cool, it's a nonsensical political ideology that reaked terrible damage and havoc to the citizens of many nations the world over. Why don't Hollywood celebrities realize this?
25it's a stupid mistake, but i still believe when you travel to other countries you need to be aware of their culture. she didn't need to be a scholar in the history of peruvian politics to have known that wearing an item of clothing with communist slogans on it would be offensive. like somebody stated earlier, i love my che shirt, but i would mind what other countries i wore it to. hell, i wouldn't even wear it in miami!
26I'm from Peru, and even thought I was a kid,I still remembered very well those times when "Shining Path" had my country in crisis. I don't want to bore anyone here, just quickly I want to say that "Shining Path" was terrorist group that best their ideology in , Mao Zedong's comunist ideas for China. Shining Path was horrible!!!
27people were terrified to go out in the strees because of the threats.
I think Cameroon should have learnt more about somebody if she was going to wear something that has the face of a man that has been so controversial in history, and I think this should apply for all people before wearing any "Che" Guevara T-shirt, or whatever that brings controversy, and not because it's a trend or something "cool".
People make mistakes, and the good thing is that she apologized...so it's good!anyways, she probably did not do it on purpose
What she did was just as offensive as wearing a Che shirt. I would personally be offended by seeing someone wear that bag or a CHe shirt here. Why do people think it is acceptable to wear clothes or items that represent the destruction of so many people?
28I don’t think this is proof that she doesn’t read a lot. Actually most people would have made the same mistake. Unless you’re a scholar of China or Peru history, you probably didn’t know there was conflict between the two countries, and since history taught in US schools covers only the US and Europe, it was a honest mistake by an American celebrity.
29Pop suggests that she should "stick with a stylist for the next few months" Do you honestly think that a stylist would have known the meaning of that slogan and it's significance to the indigenous people if Peru?
30She made a mistake and apologized quit being so judgemental over a mistake. No matter how hard we all have made bad fashion choices one time or another!
31It IS a big deal - it may not be to you, but it is to Peruvians, so please respect that. I have to agree with Mar on this one ... and the slogan is "Serve the People" ... it doesn't matter if the connotation makes no sense to you (those who don't think it's a big deal) - its historical/cultural/social/political implications are really deep for some.
32i think she looks pretty without makeup!
33& i think she sounds honest
I don't think you need to be a scholar in Peru or en expert in history to have a general idea of any country's situation, and not only indigenous were affected by "Shining Path", people from different social status, even foreing people were killed by this group. I don't think the problem is that if it's comunist or not. People may have different opinions on that, and I respect them. What I think is that people should me more aware of what they wear and why they wear it.
34I would have had no clue that this would be such a big deal.
From now on, though, I were famous, I would ask someone to research what the bag said and what that saying meant before I purcahsed it or if I did purchase it, before I carried it in public ANYWHERE.
35I agree with the comments about this being offensive. I am so tired of Hollywood people and other people trying to be like Hollywood people wearing tee shirts and other clothes that they think are trendy when at all understand the historical/cultural significance behind it. If they understood the real history behind some of the nonsense they spouted or wore they would be ashamed.
36I certainly don't wear my Che shirt b/c I think it is "cool" or b/c it is trendy to some. Sorry if it offends some people but it is part of free speech.
37I do feel her apology is sincere and some good will coe of this if only making Cameron more socially aware
38oh, & I DO understand what it means. But I don't have to justify my beliefs or actions to anyone, least of all on a gossip site
39It seemed like an honest mistake and was apologetic. Let it go.
40sashak:
that's good that you understand and know why you used them. You have your ideas and I respect them. I meant for people that don't know why they wear certain things, and trust me , many people don't know and do it because it's trendy and cool. I've known people like that. I don't pretend to discuss politics here either, I wrote my opinion and that's all
CatarinaBella521:
41Yeah, I think she did not do it with a bad intention like I said on my post, but if she is going to make a tv special program for peruvian culture( this is according "El Comercio") she should be more aware of the situation in Peru in general. Besides, this is kind of recent.
And like I said, the good thing is that she apologized
I gottcha.
42I hate it when people wear stuff like that & have no idea what it means as well. When I was in college I used to see it all the time & it made me nuts
yes, she probably was like "that is a cool red star" on the bag, when in reality it is so much more then just that. LOL!
For an actress that has traveled the world, I honestly would expect her to have known better.
43sashak: i agree w/you 100% regarding che shirts.
44I don't think she's stupid for making that "mistake"--clearly it was an honest one--but this is another reason as to why people shouldn't buy stuff with writing on it that they don't understand. My friend, who is fluent in Japanese, came to my work once and met my co-worker, who was wearing some random shirt with Japanese writing on it. She didn't know what the shirt said, but my friend knew--it said "I want your girlfriend".
Obviously not as big of
a deal, but it's still funny when people do that without knowing what they're wearing.
45sashak:
I know..same happened and happens to me

47I think Cam has smoked more than a lifetime worth of pot. I could give her a pass at being the idiot... everyone pretty much knows she is, but I won't. One should learn from their mistakes, especially her. She got a crapload of grief for her blatant ignorance of the countries she was visiting during her little MTV stint. Now she does it, again? To me, this is just another example about how clueless, insensitive, and out of touch Hollywood is.
Mao killed more people that some of the major wars combined. It is a shame that everyone can understand how offensive a swatsika is, and respect how offensive it is, but can't understand how this fricken stupid bimbo affected people who made Hitler look moderate. It's not a secret, just seems to be less important to teach, or learn. It's also kind of recent. But it also isn't a surprise. For some reason, extreme leftist dictators like Mao, Castro, and yes, even Che, get this icon status and get the pass, especially in American public school education. Guess their propoganda worked, especially with the people who never were affected by their oppression.
If anyone is interested in learning how horrible he is, this book is good: Mao: The Untold Story, Jung Chang and Jon Halliday. Maybe this stupid twit might want to take a break from picking up the bong and pick up a book. But I doubt she will. This shows she didn't learn crap the first time around.
48You can't expect actors to be experts on global history. Even people who are history majors in college usually pick ONE region or continent to study (African/Asian, European, etc.). The environment is more of her area of interest, anyway.
I think it was an honest mistake, and it is just being blown out of proportion because news channels love to talk about Celebrities talking about the news...instead of the actual policy makers discussing their work.
Fox, CNN, MSN, will all be thrilled that they can avoid the real news today while simultaniously running hot photos of Cameron. Tomorrow Paris gets out, so they will have that to distract them as well.
49Let me correct something, Mao was worse than Hitler. I meant to say "but can't understand how this fricken stupid bimbo affected people who were affected by Mao, who made Hitler look moderate."
