I don't think it is mean-spirited at all. I would probably feel the same if a guy I had been with a long time moved on so quickly after we broke up. She and Joel were very open with their relationship, so it doesn't surpise me at all that she would continue to be open after the break-up.

I should revise my statement by saying that they were pretty coy when they first starting seeing each other. But when they finally came out and said "yep, we're a couple" they were very open.

I don't think it's mean-spirited either. The girl has some really good points...a two year relationship, like she said, you've got a lot invested in that person. Beyond Nicole being a "rebound" girl for Joel, he went and got her pregnant. It sounds to me like the Joel after they broke up (getting into fights, partying, even dating Nicole in the first place) was very different from the Joel that Hilary knew, and in this article she sounds thankful that she is no longer a part of that.

I think she looks 100% better now that she is not with Joel Madden. Something about her just glows now. I wasn't that much of a fan of hers but I admire how she handled things and she has really won me over. She was way too good for him.

I totally understand where Hilary is coming from. The same thing happened to me. I was with my ex for 2.5 years and after we broke up I wondered who the hell he was since he completed changed. He started going out to clubs, which he always hated with me, drinking alot, which he always hated, he was dating someone new within a couple months of us breaking up. It was really hard and really upsetting since I thought I was going to marry this man and he turned out completely opposite of who I thought he was.

Hilary is entitled to feel that way. You never really get over your first love. It's been over 3 years since we broke up, and I still feel a little twinge of heartache over him. Especially since his girlfriend is a fug version on myself!
But now I am happily getting married in 38 days to the love of my life!

you know, i'm only 2 years older than she is and i remember when i had a boyfriend at that age who "oh so important" and it was hurtful when we broke up. he and i have actually moved on and are really good friends now, but that age is really tough to get through and i couldn't possibly imagine doing it in the media like that. i'm glad she is doing well and she looks amazing! so much better without joel.
