We've been hoping for the Winona Ryder comeback for a while, eagerly checking in on her making her movies (I'm especially excited about The Ten) and keeping track of her appearances. Judging from the August cover of Vogue, Miss Winona may be ready for her next big break. I must say, I love it! But first, she's got a few things to say about that whole infamous shoplifting incident. In her words:
"The attention was what was embarrassing. It was the December after Sept. 11. … So much attention was being paid to me, when we had just been attacked, and there was all this really important news going on. Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor … was giving me a lot of stuff (Oxycodone, not to be confused with OxyContin), and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don't know if you are in pain but you're taking it. Have you ever taken painkillers? It isn't a reckless (state), like you're out of your head. It's just confusion."
As I said, I'm excited for the comeback, but I'm hoping she's not forced to rehash this in every interview along the way. I'd much rather hear her reminisce about Heathers or Mermaids, right?

11Yes I have been on painkillers...matter of fact I take Oxycodone for a bulging disc and never have I been confused...and to the point of shoplifting...it's just an excuse she's using and hoping it works...

21I love it! I am excited for her to move on and want people to let go. With so many stars having breakdowns, hers really was harmless. At least she wasn't driving drunk, with cocaine in the car and in her system, and crashing into a tree....now that is reckless behavior.

24She looks amazing on that cover, even if the pose is a bit awkward. I kind of don't buy that the shoplifting was linked to being addicted to painkillers, but I've never suffered from an addiction like that so I really don't know how it affects you. Shoplifting is one of those things that a lot of people do just for the thrill of it, and it is usually something that even people with plenty of money get off on. Not surprised that she did it, but it's weird for her to have to talk about it and then link it to the drugs.
25I hate excuses. You did wrong, Winona, just admit it. We've all done stupid things. And maybe what she did might be considered "harmless", if you consider thievery harmless, but what irked me about it is that this was a rich celebrity stealing. It wasn't a Les Miserables/Jean Valjean type stealing. She probably got tons of freebies, but just felt the urge to steal. And now she wants to blame some old painkillers. Whatever!

27I don't like that dress, I'm not a fan of hers, and I don't believe her excuses.
28I wasn't missing her and enjoyed the break from her whining, but that's nice that she is trying to put her life together.

29I'm with you PJM. It is so ridiculous that a grown woman still cannot stand up and say, "yeah, I suck and I am a thief" @ least she is a rich one? She's leavin a bad taste in my mouth, she should go back into hiding.

31Agreed, girlfriday. That huge bow makes her look like a walking Christmas present. That's probably why she looks so uncomfortable in that pic, she probably realized how ridiculous she looks.
32She looks pretty as always. Mermaids is one of my favorites, along with Edward Scissor Hands.
33I can't believe you mentioned Mermaids! No one ever knows what that movie is, but it's my favorite movie ever! She was always one of my favorite actresses before the shoplifting thing and I'd still love to see her in some good movies (no more Mr. Deeds or crappy horror films please).
34The shoplifting was wrong whatever her excuse (which I'm not sure I'm buying, but I don't have experience with painkillers), but I'm willing to give her another chance. I mean, it kinda seems like something weird was going on cuz why else would a rich celeb steal? Still, I wish she'd just say it was wrong and move on. But, at least it's not like she was driving drunk and putting others in harm like many other celebs.

45It sounds like she has no remorse and I think the addiction excuse is a bunch of hooey. Just say you made a mistake, stole from the store, and are sorry you did it. I'd respect her a lot more if she had said that.
