It wouldn't be the Summer of Damon without a few magazine covers including the latest of GQ. The Bourne Ultimatum is finally almost here and we couldn't be more excited to check out the final chapter. In the interview Matt compares Bourne to Bond, jokes about being lame with Ben, and he also reveals why he's so quiet about his personal life. Here's more:
- On the differences between Jason Bourne and James Bond:
Bond is part of the system. He’s an imperialist and a misogynist, and he laughs at killing people, and he sits there slugging martinis. It’ll never be the same thing as this, because Bourne is a guy who is against the establishment, who is paranoid and on the run. I just think fundamentally they’re just very different things. - On why not commenting on his personal life makes him a better actor:
The better the actor, the less you know about his life. “I mean, nobody’s better than De Niro, and you don’t know anything about him, right?” Look at Meryl. We don’t know sh*t about Meryl. Look at Clint. And Jack. And Brando. Marlon Brando—who f*ing knows, right? - On he and Ben Affleck getting their first big paycheck after selling the script for Good Will Hunting:
We both bought Jeep Grand Cherokees. It was funny, because Ben and I, we both always wanted a Jeep Grand Cherokee for some reason. That was the car. We always talked about it but never could afford one. So when we suddenly had the money, we each instantly started trying to convince each other to get a different car. We’d say, ‘Hey, have you seen the Explorer? The Ford Explorer is really cool.’ Because we knew it would just be so gay to get the same car.
Matt is definitely right up there with Hollywood's finest, but we wouldn't mind getting a little more info about his private life. Until then, we're more than happy to settle for watching him on the big screen when the movie premieres on August 3rd.
More of an adorable Damon looking like an all American boy so read more

I really admire how Matt handles fame.
1I agree bizzybee, he sounds really laid-back and chill here. Nice interview.
2hot
3"...Because we knew it would just be so gay to get the same car"
That's a hilarious story! He's right though, the less you know about an actor the more of a blank canvas they can be when it comes to playing a part. They don't have all this baggage with them to constantly distract the viewer from the story they're trying to tell. This is why some (LINDSAY) people, and I'm not (LOHAN) thinking of anyone in particular (LI) will never be good actors (LO) because we just know too much about them.
4i don't know why but i'm left cold.
5He is so adorable. He reminds me of a boyfriend I had when I was 18, except my ex actually had Marky Mark's body back then, but he looked just like Matt Damon.
6And he's smart, keep your private life your private life. It's enough they get followed when they're on vacation with their wives and children. That's sad.
7OMG! Not just smart but sexy, i see him in a different light.
8Aside from the fact that I love this man
...You have to respect him for wanting to
protect both his career and his family.
9LOVE HIM!
10I think he is funny (who still openly says, "that would be so gay") and I like that he is so smart and down to earth.
11Well Matt, news for you! We know a lot about your personal life. We know who you're married to, how many kids you have, what they look like, where you spent your last vaction... we even have a bunch of pics from that lovely time... and we get candids pics of you all the time... really very different than Meryl and De Niro.
12I can't wait for the Bourne Ultimatum!
13It's sad that other media outlets are making a big deal of the fact that he said "that would be so gay". I'm quite sure that he was not trying to be disparaging toward the homosexual community. I'm from New England. It's just a pretty common phrase. I think people are a little too sensitive sometimes.
Oh, Yeah, and I LOVE Matt Damon! He just seems real.
14Hiedi, we know that because people stalk him. He is saying that he doesn't talk about his personal life.
15OMG I LOVE HIM!!!
16SOO SOO GORGEOUS, SMART AND TALENTED!
**droooll
Sorry Hiedi, I mean't Lillyca
17Oh please, they are making a big deal about that???
18i like him a lot!
as soon as i read him so "it would just be so gay" i knew people would find it problematic. i'm from PA and it's a pretty damned common phrase around here.
19I'm glad he bought an American car. Brownie points for Matt.
20Oh my......I just l-o-v-e him.
21Oh its a common phrase everywhere I think. I use it, not in front of my gay sister-in-law, although it has NOTHING to do with gay people! Duh.
22Doesn't he? While promoting Ocean's 13, he couldn't stop gushing about Isabella and how wonderful it's to be a father.
23Maybe, if he considers himself so private, he shouldn't say a word about his daughter then.
Don't get me wrong. I think Matt is a terrific actor, but I do have a problem with any celebrity (and especially such a public persona as Matt) comparing his level of privacy with De Niro's. Sounds like he's trying too hard, when in fact we know and hear as much from him than most celebrities.
Aww...Matt seems like a pretty cool guy. What we do know of his personal life: that he loves his wife and his 2 beautiful daughters, is quite enough for me!!!
24He gets interviewed while doing movies just like Robert de Niro does...they will answer simple questions like that but we don't know everything about them. That's the difference between actors that keep to themselves and those that have videos of themselves doing lines off of each other on youtube.
25"it would be so gay"? oh, really, matt? and what exactly does "gay" mean? poor word choice on his part. loss of points.
26Happy!!!
27well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that has no problem with his choice of words. It's just a phrase, no big deal. And there's this thing called freedom of speech...
28He's hot and continues to get hotter! It's funny because when he first came on the scene, I thought he looked too little boyish and elfish to be hot. Age is agreeing with him!
29Does anyone see a striking resemblance between Matt and Wentworth Miller? Tell me I'm not going crazy.
30OMG! How GORGEOUS is this man!? and he's a family man, too...it doesnt get any better!
31Hubba, Hubba!!! Matt is one smart dude, always knew he was the smarter one of the two (Ben has never struck me as smart and especially after the J-lo thing). I like it htat he keeps his personal life quiet. We don't need to seem him passed out after partying all night. Again, HUBBA HUBBA!!!!
32every time I see him I think of Team America. Is that just me? MATT DAMON!!
33I don't really think we know too much. I agree Tiabia, we know he loves his daughter(s) and hos wife and likes hanging out with his best friend. That is about all I need to know. Throw in the occasional photoshoot of his hotness and it is all good.
I alos thing it is an unfair comparison to DeNiro or Brando, etc. Their prime exposure was way before celebrity blogs or TMZ or the vastness of the internet.
34All those actors he talks about are old now but I remember when Jack was in the tabloids. I think being a good actor means people can forget who you are and for a couple of hours in the theater you are another person. I don't think your private life gets in the way if people can see you as someone else.
35I love the down-to-earthness about him!
36He seems so normal.
37i think i'm the only person in the universe that doesn't find him remotely attractive...
38but he seems nice none the less,... and he's from bean town,...represent, lol
i think when i see something lame, i'm gonna say, "oh, that is SO hetero!"
39I'm pretty laid back about this kind of thing, but I have to say the "so gay" line did bother me. It's not common where I live to say something like that. Even if it is common in some places, that phrase was meant to be derogatory. I'm guessing Matt didn't mean it in that way, but that IS where the phrase comes from. I don't mean to preach, but many racial slurs were quite common at one time too, and it doesn't make them acceptable to say...and not because they fell out of common usage, but because people realized how offensive they were. Now, some people still choose to use them and roll their eyes and talk about free speech, which is their choice. I guess it's the same with phrases like this. I'm not saying everyone should be offended by it, that's your choice. But I think it is fair that some of us would be bothered by it. Now, am I going to boycott his movies until he apologizes? No. But for me, it was still unfortunate to read those words coming from an actor I otherwise respect.
40love you matt,
seriously, PC is gonna destroy us, so we can't say that's so gay now, gay means happy, it also has different meanings and matt simply used the word in one of the manny ways it is used in every day speak, calm down.......
41matt damon rocks.
42Yummy!
43the word gay is not a synonym for stupid. that was actually pretty offensive to read. people are only sensitive to those kinds of phrases because they are hurtful.
44So cute! Love him!
45Oh the Hottness !
i just LOVE him !!!
46I'm saying that it's not offensive to me, and it wouldn't be worth getting upset every time someone make a joke about blonde's, or a crack about Christianity, or women, or anything else that people get worked up about. I guess I just don't care what other people think about any sub-category I may or may not belong to. Every has their opinion, and not everyone is going to like everything. If I'm happy with myself, and with who I am, then why would I be offended by some off-the-cuff remark, that wasn't even meant to be derogatory? I think people take it too far, and look for reasons to be upset, and for people to say "poor me". That is all.
47Although the way Matt used the word Gay could be taken as/ is derogatory. I don't think he meant to insult / putdown anyone. He was just expressing his self like many people do on a daily bases. He simply wasn't thinking before he spoke....(especially during an interview). The word he should have used was (Embarrassing). Matt isn't a bad person. He is just a guy that made a mistake.
I don't understand why some Matt Damon fans feel the need to say negative things about Ben at every opportunity. Matt and Ben have been Best Friends since childhood. Matt has supported Ben thorough thick and thin and vice versa. It's a good thing Matt always has such positive things to say about Ben, because some of his fans try their best to lift him up by way of comparing him to Ben.......Which is sad.
48Matt can stand on his on with insulting Ben to do it.
It's good to see Matt and Ben continue to be friends with all the comparing and insults out there.
This kind of looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch ad.
49good for him for keeping his personal life personal...some "stars" really need to learn how to do that and not leave everything out in the open -
