Natalie Portman looks sultry in black and white like Chace Crawford for the September issue of Interview. She is currently juggling multiple projects while also promoting her directorial debut in New York, I Love You. Her Brothers costar Jake Gyllenhaal conducted the interview and he got Natalie talking about her love of rap, My Little Ponies, and the optimistic way she views the recession. Here are some highlights:

- On what song describes her current state: "My current state . . . I’m trying to think of a song that feels like sleepwalking. [laughs] I don’t know. I’ve mostly been listening to dirty rap lately. That’s sort of my scene . . . Really, really obscene hip-hop. I love it so much. It makes me laugh and then it makes me want to dance. Those are like my two favorite things, so combined . . . I’ve been listening a lot lately to 'Wait (The Whisper Song)' by the Ying Yang Twins, where the lyrics are like, 'Wait ’til you see my d*ck' — which is just amazing because it’s whispered. [whispers] 'Wait ’til you see my d*ck . . . ' [laughs] Crazy. So I just listen to it like I’m a five-year-old, like, 'Oh my god! I can’t believe he just said that!'"
- On what skills she'd put on a job resume: "As far as skills go . . . I don’t have that many skills. [Jake: "Oh come on!"] I’m serious. I really wish I could make something. I mean, you’re a really good cook, you know how to build things — you can make things with your hands. I can’t make anything . . . Well, I can make chitchat, but not much else. I mean, I’d basically have trouble with any job that doesn’t require me to wear silly clothes and talk in funny voices . . . And so I’m an actor."
To read what Natalie had to say about why the recession might be pushing people to pursue their passions just read more.
- On the recession: "I think it’s kind of an exciting time. I mean, everyone is cutting back. It’s happening in every industry — including our own. But I think that’s going to translate into a situation where people aren’t motivated by money as much as they have been in the recent past. A lot of my friends from college went into fields like banking for financial reasons — obviously people have school loans and things to pay off. And now, all of a sudden, they’re doing jobs that they hate and they’re not making as much money as they thought they would or they’ve lost their jobs entirely. So I’ve started to see people looking more toward their own passions and what really excites them. Obviously it’s much easier to say that you’re going to follow your passions when you’re financially secure, but at least we can take solace in the fact that we now have the time to pursue the things that we really want to pursue because now the option of doing things just for the money isn’t necessarily there."
Love her!
1i lover her. she is breathtaking
2hah ha ha ha ha! love her!
3Love her, she looks gorgeous in these photos!
4I hate how they photoshopped her within an inch of her life
5thats a fun interview.
I do love the obscene rap songs! haha
6love her. such an awesome role model.
7and great interview!
Are you sure this is Natalie?-
8air brushing and photoshopped.
for, like, a minute i thought it was lindsay lohan.
9i just read more at 'interview' and parts totally cracked me up.
10jake: you could be a bike messenger...
natalie: i could totally be a bike messenger.
# 9 me too!
11I think she's great. But the photo of her sticking her pinky finger down her throat is just plain weird. She looks like a bulimia poster child.
12Wow it barely looks like her. The pinky photo is weird - looks like she's digging for food in her teeth.
13The pic with her finger in her mouth... Lindsay Lohan much? ahaha
14jeje i thought thats was lindsay too!!
jeje shes funny!
15Is she purging her dinner in that photo?
16Yes, the recession is extremely exciting. It's pretty funny to see people lose their jobs and have to take crap jobs to make ends meet...
Other than that paragraph of stupidity, great article and she is really easy to look at.
17She's beautiful but her outlook on the recession is warped and kinda stupid. If anything, people will do anything to get by in a recession, and not look at their dream job or life's passion because maybe that isnt profitable at this time. I know what she's trying to say, she just sounds like an idiot though.
18And does she seriously think people wont be motivated by money during a recession? People will always be motivated by money. When it comes to a recession, people will jump at any chance to make a buck. Natalie Portman is pretty stupid.
19Stupid? Optimistic maybe but hardly stupid. A gent from my town, recently opened his own restaurant after being made redundant because of the recession. He and his wife always wanted to do it but there was no way he would leave his job. Yes, he was forced to start his own business due to the recession but now he's doing something he's completely passionate about.
20I wouldn't call a woman who went to Harvard and speaks Hebrew fluently stupid.
21Fun interview, except for the recession part. I think I understand what she was trying to hit home, but it's not landing very well. It's easy for someone in her financial situation (millions and millions in the bank) to have this sort of optimistic take on what is happening in our world right now. It's very different for the folks whom have lost their jobs due to the recession, and are struggling to provide their family with the basic needs of shelter, food and clothing.
I do like her, and she is absolutely stunning. She is a very talented actor, and as for the rapping - her SNL skit will always rate top notch with me.
22she's a potato head but i'd still give it to her
23@21
24Natalie Hershlag was born in Israel and her father is Israeli so it should come as no surprise that she speaks Hebrew. Also, plenty of dumb people get into Ivy League schools as long as they are rich or famous. I had the misfortune of being in a couple of classes with Natalie so believe me when I say that she's as dumb as they come. People losing their homes and jobs is not "exciting". Maybe one of the ways people can cut back is by not buying tickets to her mediocre films, forcing her to experience the joy of cutting back.
Yes, she delivered the recession part a bit wrong, but I get her point. People exaggerate the whole recession crisis anyway. Or at least it isn't so bad where I come from, it's probably worse in the US. But anyway, I love her. I think it's hilarious she's into the "obscene rap scene" right now.. I do enjoy to laugh at the lyrics as well. But I hope she returns to the indie scene soon, because that's how I love her most.
25she's totally selling herself short - didn't she go to an ivy league college? that's pretty impressive. she's always been one of my favorites and i love her perspective on things
26She had an opportunity to use her intelligence and she stooped to disgusting, misogynistic rap lyrics. I'm embarrassed for her.
27lol, she's having fun...Natalie's kinda intense so it's cool for her to be silly...she's beautiful
28i adore her, but yes, i agree with #26...she is selling herself short.
29Shes not selling herself short. She mentions going to Harvard in every single f*ckinggg interview as if it makes her better then everyone.
Who cares if she likes rap? She listens to it for a joke- shes not living her life by those lyrics.
30I agree -- I think Natalie's take on the recession is a bit naive. She speaks from a position of never been economically deprived (she's the only child, and her father is a doctor). She doesn't know how bad a recession can be for some people.
She doesn't know. And she doesn't know what she doesn't know.
However, with that said, I still admire her as an actress. Also, she is very lovely. Too bad Chanel couldn't' get her to be their celebrity spokesperson. For Chanel, Natalie would have been a better choice than Lily Allen (yuck).
31She does not mention going to Harvard in every interview or article or whatever. It's the media and press people that keep mentioning it. And so what if she does anyway, she spent 4 years there, it's an important and challenging time for anyone and you learn alot about yourself, so the RARE time she does mention it, she's entitled. People just seem to be hung up on the fact that it's Harvard.
32I've noticed that Natalie has a very utopian view of life, that im my opinion, unintentionally offends people. I don't think she's unaware of the struggles that some face because she has seen evidence of this herself. It's a lovely, breezy interview though and it's a shame it's being marred by some of her comments.
33She has the point of view of a naive rich girl who has no idea what is like to work 5, 6 or 7 days a week for a sh*tty salary. It's cool to be so excited about recession when you have millions in the bank and nothing to worry about. People can only pursue their passions once they have like, you know, food in the fridge???? what a kid¬¬
she's so calculated it's creepy. Like, hey, I'm a prude but I'm also sexy, I'm smart but also mushy, I'm the best but also sooo humble. She wants to please everybody, I like people who show their defects as well as their attributes. she wants people to think she's perfection, it's all a lie.
I'm not going to say it's fine because it's her. It seems like when this girl says anything, everybody must agree with it because it's HER, SO?????????? Who the hell is she in the end? an actress who went to Harvard for being an ACTRESS, BIG DEAL, WOW, SMART.
34Her comment on the recession may not be pc but its somewhat true. She's saying we are part of history. As far as her photos, I always thought she looked like a less attractive Kira Knightly (not ugly by any means). Whats wrong with listening to stupid music that makes you laugh? I doubt everyone here blares classical in there car?
35wow, she's a moron. I remember an interview another interview where she said she knew what it feels like to be black because she's a celebrity, and knows what it's like to "feel special"
36Are you serious cordata? Thats so lame of her. Ew Natalie.
37Yeah, I remember reading the article in Allure. Here's her apology:
http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/Natalie+Portman-1761.html
38Thanks for the link. What do you think of her apology? It seems sincere but it sort of ruined her for me.
39I do like Natalie Portman, but she knows nothing about being out of work or not having enough money to buy food. Is it really a special time for "HER" or others? That's what I want to know. And I do remember that comment she said in Glamour about Bookie T. Washington. How can she compare her feelings against the paps to 400yrs of racism. WHAT!!! Natalie Portman needs to step out into the REAL WORLD.
40i like her. she cracks me up.
41She's talented and gorgeous, one of the best of her generation. But the answers, wow! I don't think she's stupid but her answers sounded silly to me.
42Absolutely adorable
43What a dumb ass, stuck up b*tch ! I used to think she was intellectual but obviously not. Just another stupid actor who has too much money.
44She never makes any sense. So pretentious and such an overrated actress.
