Drew Barymore and Ellen Page teamed up in matching yellow for the October cover of Marie Claire. Inside the magazine, the girls got saucy in their roller skates and kissing for the camera. Ellen has been spending her Summer filming Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio while Drew has been working and playing with her boyfriend Justin Long on Going the Distance. The girls are back together to promote Whip It! talking about their experiences learning roller derby for the movie and what it was like for Drew as a first-time director. Here's more:
- Drew on when she decided to direct: "I was 6 years old. That's when I turned in my first script to my godfather. [That would be Steven Spielberg, folks.] He called it Terms of Endrewment — ironically, like Whip It, it was also about a mother-daughter relationship."
- Drew about Ellen: "Ellen has such a beautiful body, and I personally battled with my own body image for years. I used to tell myself, You can't wear anything sleeveless or strapless. And all of a sudden I was like, What if I just didn't send such negative messages to my brain and said, wear it and enjoy it? And now I'm more comfortable in clothes than ever."
- Ellen on Drew: "I first met Drew at the Chateau Marmont. And it was a surreal moment for me in my life. You could just feel her warmth and kindness immediately, and the way she carried herself was just so grounded. So then it was like, 'Oh, this is going to be great.' And then it went into, 'Oh, my God, I'm really crazy about this person.' It just grew and grew and grew and grew and grew."

i don't get why they had to kiss for the camera??
1i love both these girls, but that picture is unecessary
WHOA this picture threw me right off! I did not expect that kind of garbage from Ellen
. I held
her in such high regard; I put her in a classy league. She has dissapointed me. I'm actually very very sad. Disgusted is not even the word. Heartbroken.
2yeah what the? I don't get that at all
3It didn't bother me. A simple kiss is a beautiful thing.
4Eww...why?
And this isn't even a gay thing...hetero or homo...why make out for the camera when in a photo shoot?! Especially in a bizarre situation where you are not an item in reality or in a coming movie/show?!
5people!
6it's just a kiss... get over yourselves
The kissing itself doesn't bother me, but it's just really unprofessional in this context- they're promoting a project that they worked hard on.
7The picture is fine but I don't get the kiss. Is it just to show how much they respect each other?
8Ok people..
They are kissing bc they think it is the "cool" thing to do. They want to "stand out" and "shock" similarly to the college girls who kiss each other for male attention.
9ellen looks GREAT on the cover - wow - she really cleans up nice doesn't she? anyway, you have to love how they speak about each other and i hope that the movie is well received. i've been looking forward to it for months now.
10Wow some of you people need to get the f-ck over yourselves. You sound like a bunch of judgemental homophobes. It was a kiss probably meant to be funny. They are not making out for Christ sake. I kiss my girlfriends hello and goodbye all the time and it means nothing more than I love my friends and we are comfortable enough with each other to do that. I think it's a beautiful picture and I love both of them. Thank God they are not your friends..You sound like very sad people to me..
11I don't think it's the kiss itself that's bothering anyone. It just seems completely out of context for what they are doing (promoting a movie about a roller derby - unless they are lesbians in this movie?).
12lol yes it is so sad and unnatural not to swap saliva with all your gal pals.
13I don't have a problem with the kiss. I have a problem with how cheesy and "let's do this to be provocative" it feels. (My brother was born a woman, and is now completely living as a man, married to a lovely girl.... so don't blast me on "hating")
14I agree with jennibean, cause I too don't mind the kiss itself just that it seems so attention seeking is the part I don't like, if they wanted to show their affection for one another they could've just hugged or given each other a kiss on the cheek or whatevs something you can actually believe they do when there aren't cameras around
15Bit desperate, huh? Again, it's not the kiss that's offensive, it's the blatant attention-whoring. How classy.
16drew is trying too hard
17Ted C. had a blind v. saying an A-list star was being forced to "come out" by her new lady love...could it be? Either way, congrats Drew, it's your life, live it!
18um wow. seriously. why are people getting all bent over a little kiss? i kiss my friends all the time when we say hello. does that make it gross? its not like they are totally macking on each other with tongue. its a sweet picture.
19But it's obviously NOT a "Oh, we just saw each other and are saying hello" photo... if they caught a candid of them as they both got there kissing hello, it's totally different. This is contrived and desperate! Very different!
20Exactly! It is not the kiss that bothers me...i think that image is completely fine...its the attention whoring and desperation....and how unprofessional when they are trying to promote a film.
21Gross, for THAT reason. But I guess I'll be labelled a homophobe anyways, Even though I am completely pro gay rights and all that
weird...I don't get the point...
22Does anyone else think Ellen looks like a brunette Olsen twin here?
23I agree with the last couple posts. Its the attention -seeking, trying Wayyyyyy too hard - that I dont like.
24Funny, would anyone be saying all this negative sh!t if it was a man & women!?! Also i thought ELLEN P. came out already? I guess i should expect such interesting comments when peeps on here still think Jake G. is gay for playing a gay man!
25I love both these girls, it's just a kiss...
26I don't even kiss my daughter on the mouth, let alone my friends. Not because of the gay issue, it just isn't a natural thing to do. I don't even think to kiss a woman on the mouth. It must be a cultural, lifestyle thing. Or generational. My female friends would slap the hell out of a woman if she kissed her on the mouth.
27I think it's sad to go all 'Katy Perry' to sell a movie. LOL
Jrocs, I'd still wonder why if it were a man and woman cause it's pointless. Especially if it's point isn't to be helpful to lesbianism just exploitative. I'd think lesbians wouldn't appreciate it.
28They both look fantastic. Love Drew!
29I'm surpised so many people care about a kiss - I know I don't!
30Eww. I don't understand why they need to kiss. Is this supposed to lure me into watching a roller derby movie? I dont' really see the connection.
31I think it's sweet!
32I agree with Leilanic1! I think its cute! Its not like they are sucking face or anything! Its a peck on the lips from one friend to another. I kiss my friends all the time!
33WHO CARES!
what is correct or incorrect is dictated by the values of a society in one specific moment...these days I guess 2 girls kissing is accepted by our society. However kissing is a sexy, sensual act when it's done by two adults. what did they want to show by kissing? their friendship? No, they are just using sex to sell the movie...and we all know that sex between two girls always sell better!
34The overdone lesbian kiss how creative lol.
35JRocs, no one would say anything if it were a man and woman kissing because that's obviously not a cry for attention. Two girls kissing is. No one wants to see it because it's absolutely unnecessary and I resent that everyone has to jump on here and call everyone a judgmental homophobe just for having a different opinion. It's pretty clear that you're only allowed to have an opinion if you agree with everyone else, otherwise you're considered a waste of space.
36I think it's just the angle of the kiss, it's one step away from a full blown makeout session. The kiss aside, the cover looks overly photoshopped.
37Hmmm now I am intrigued; I need to know....is Ellen Page in all reality actually gay?
38I can somewhat see it as a possibility. Anyone know?
It's Drew's quote about Ellen's body that's giving me the creeps. Maybe it was taken out of context, but it seems so out of place here. Guess I'll have to read the entire article. The kiss picture seems awkward, like it was the photographer's idea, not something they would do on their own. If they are a couple, all I can say about that is Drew's a little too old for Ellen.
39i think it's funny.
40i used to like both of them back in the day. now, i just find them pathetic and vying for attention
411· absolutley agree with "brunet olsen twin"
422· don´t understand the kiss either. it doesn´t bother me, but what does it mean? "we are good friends?" you don´t need a lip to lip kiss to show that
a hug would have been be more representative of the friendship
43It's just a kiss...and one could argue that posing in a magazine is attention whoring period. Personally I like the picture.
44Ellen and Drew are free spirits who are less inhibited emotionally than the rest of us.
45Its what makes them great actors and wonderful human beings.
The pictures are beautiful expressions of their fun and vitality.
Everbody-Everbody KNOWS they r dong this because they r doing an interview for a mag. Yes! I do believe Drew swings both ways and so she finds Ellen attractive. Free-spirted -NO! You didnt' see hippie women kissing all on eachother. This is no big deal to me.
46i agree with a lot of the previous posts. the picture does seem photoshopped. did ellen get skinny? cause it looks that way on the cover. and i don't see the point of the kiss. it's provocative, but why do it? the ad for the movie was pretty good in itself. the kiss definitely confuses me.
47Totally love Drew and the hot bod of her's !!! But I just cannot forget she didn't attend Cam's getting her star on the walk of fame. How could she ever do this to Cam?
48Just more media attention whoring.
49i really admire drew for being beautiful inside and out. i hope i could meet her soon and become best of friends forever.hahahaha
