Jennifer Lopez has been in LA promoting El Cantante and even though the movie didn't crack the top ten grossing films in its opening weekend, it is considered a box office success. The movie brought in $3.3 million which is even less than LL's disaster film from last weekend, however, it is playing on so few screens and the actual average per screen was the 4th highest (behind Bourne, Simpsons and Becoming Jane). This is great news for Jennifer and Marc who put their heart and soul into this project. So along with her fabulous marriage and her successful business empire, J Lo can now be proud of her opening weekend box office numbers - even if $3.3 seems low.

hate that dress
1The dress is giving me a headache. Her hair looks cute though.
2Love the dress.
I bet El Cantante will be a good rental.
3Not a flattering dress at all! Definitely a good distraction from her film.
4that dress is too busy
5She is beautiful! I just can't look at her left thigh because the reflection is blinding!!
6I'll see the movie some day soon.
7I actually really like the dress. Not sure I'd wear it, but it's pretty pleasing to the eye.
8She looks hot as per usual. I actually want to watch el cantante even if if it's inaccurate.
9That dress hurts my eyes
10She looks casual and fantastic - so beautiful. I think we have some haters in the crowd. sad.
11Nice legs!
12The reviews are lukewarm at best and some Latino groups are decrying the presentation of the Lavoes in the movie. I actually want to see it, though. On DVD.
13I think she looks fat here .... sorry!
14She looks cute but I don't care for the migraine inducing dress. Wait, didn't Lindsay pull in the same amount her opening week and she got ripped apart??? Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I remember.
15i find it quite interesting how different type of clothing can make a person look so entirely different, these people are lucky they have stylists who get them clothing that fit right for their body. i dont like the dress here and she does look kinda heavy, i dont like her legs at all but her hair and her face look pretty.
16I think her hair and makeup are gorgeous. The dress is just okay.
17Oops, didn't read the whole paragraph re: LL's film and JLo's...sorry!
18I hate that dress. But her movie looks interesting and she's in some enviable shape.
19she looks really good here from head to toe
20I saw the movie this weekend and I liked it a lot. The music was great, Marc Anthony's portrayal of Hector Lavoe was good and Jennifer was great in her role too. Thumbs up from me.
21I think she looks great, and the perfect hair and make-up balances well with the casual dress. However, if I had legs like J-LO, Beyonce, Scarlett, Isla Fisher and a couple of others (not to mention Brit!), I'd probably avoid wearing ultra-mini dresses, simply because a slightly longer length would be more flattering on their not-so-ultra-slim legs.
22miss her with ben...i know she moved on with marc and him with garner
she is getting older though
23I don't hate the dress, but Jennifer has definitely looked better. As for the movie, I'm also going to watch it once it hits DVD. Movies that are torn apart like this have to be seen. I'm expecting a mediocre film: it won't be bad, but it won't be the great that it was striving for.
24that dress is awful
25I wanted to see this but the closest place it was playing was 30 miles from my house! Will wait for dvd...
26Lousy dress !
27Nice Legs, Not so nice Dress, have heard bad things about the movie...
28The reviews have been pretty bad. The only "success" about this story is that they made a smart move by putting it in so few theaters since they knew no one would come out at see it.
I think movies are considered truly "successful" in the business when they earn back the money that went into producing them.
29She looks cute!
30juju, i agree with you. Although it earned a lot for being screened in few screenings, it's still not enough to probably earn back the production cost.
However, I think this shows a bit of momentum for some Jennifer films. I know I may be the only one here but I actually like watching her on screen. She has charisma and personality in her films that most huge actresses don't have. With more dramatic roles, I think Jeniffer can develop her craft.
31The only reason this movie was seen was because of the subject matter, and the fact that Marc is pretty good in it and can actually sing. All the reviews said she added nothing, and actually detracted because she did nothing for the character of Puchi except show off her clothes. One review said she "chewed the scenery", another said she turned it into a vehicle for herself. Has anyone heard anything about Bordertown - that got booed out of the Berlin Film Festival cause she was so awful and now no one will distribute it.That was about a serious and important problem. Critics there said the same thing - she took an important subject and trivialized it.
32You can admire her looks and clothes all you want - but make her stop trying to act.
The dress makes me dizzy, nauseous...oh wait! It's not the dress it's JLo Bleh!
33i'm not surprised that nobody saw her film
34The NY Time Critic didn’t like the movie, but said Marc’s musical performances are great.
35He felt people should buy the soundtrack and forget the movie
i's an independant movie what are you guys talking about ? 3m for 550 is really good the movie was made for only $15M. You guys should judge her performance after watching the movie not before.
and BA4ever your'e wrong, you wanna know what many critics said about her performances ? here it his.
Indeed, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony - two powerhouse entertainers - deliver professionally earnest, at times truly gritty, performances in their portrayal of salsa creator Héctor Lavoe and his wife, Puchi.
Denver Post Film critic
Still, as summer pop entertainment, "El Cantante" has a certain fizz, and the music is spectacular. And it provides yet another chance to marvel at Lopez, who as the neurotic, controlling, codependent but ultimately fiercely loving and loyal Puchi steals every scene she's in. Perhaps her roots as a dancer explain her incomparable command of her body, voice and emotional range. Working her native Bronx accent with an edge that could cut ice, she utterly commands the screen (and eclipses her husband), whether she's shaking her booty for a zoned-out "Hectah" or delivering a bravura version of the classic "I'm not going" soliloquy. A star isn't born in "El Cantante" as much as it's reconfirmed. She's still here, and she's still got it.
Washington Post
And as for Lopez, nothing in her previous work on screen prepares you for her role as Puchi, unsympathetic codependent of a sympathetic artist. Fearless is an overused adjective when it comes to actresses. But Lopez is fearless here. As Puchi she is unafraid to be hateful, unafraid to be greedy, unafraid to let the bitterness fly.
Here is one measure of Lopez's chilling performance: The only other actress I can imagine playing it this way is Barbara Stanwyck.
Philadelphia Inquirer
And J-Lo really delivers the goods. I haven't always been a fan, but she makes this movie a must-see. Shaking her booty in backless gowns with balls of brass, a hornet's nest of hair by Westinghouse, oversize sunglasses and cherry red lipstick on fire, she is shockingly good. The music is unforgettable, but she brings a pulsating rhythm to El Cantante that is uniquely her own.
NY Observer
Puchi is not June Carter. She fights hard and is nobody's fool. She is a richly drawn character. Lopez is sensational. She has returned to acting.
36As producer, Jennifer Lopez chose the perfect director to bring Hector Lavoe's life and music to the screen. Ichaso presents the music as a celebration of sexuality and love of life. All the scenes are vivid and filled with an emotional charge. He has fashioned performances from Lopez and Anthony that are psychologically vibrant. This is more than a musical about the birth of Salsa, it is a stark look at a marriage destroyed by fame and drugs.

shes turned into a stepford wife, really nobody now
37Gigli anyone? ahem... In spite of the fact that I will never see any of her movies or buy any of her music, I will say that she does look good.. After all, im not blind... That outfit is kinda scary, but overall, of course, she looks good.. I say this as an animal lover, because at least she isn't wearing fur this time..
38I think this dress is too short for her age. Even though she looks good.
39holy crap i just threw up a little in my mouth that dress is so intoxicating.
40ook blinding............
41looking at j.lo made me instantly nauseous...i wonder how much of that had to do with the dress.
42that dress is giving me a seizure!
43That dress does her bottom half no favors. Cute shoes though. I think she's a pretty gal when she has the right hair/makeup/wardrobe people.
The only movie of hers that I really enjoyed was Selena. Everything else sucks eggs.
44I love hot haters still continue to ignore the reviews of Jennifer's performance, and still label it a complete disaster and travesty. Once a hater, always a hater.
45I love her. She always looks stunning!
46Crazy dress!
47To me, seeing as I don't get headaches or go blind from patterns too easily, the problem with this dress is that the black trimming makes it look cheap - as does the length and the fact that it is not very well fitted. And no, not nice legs.
48Nadioz, thanks for posting the reviews. I was curious to see what the critics thought of her performance, and although I am sure there are many who are negative, some apparently thought she was good as well. Personally, I like seeing her on the screen althogh her latest movies have been too crap to watch. I wish she would return to more serious/dramatic roles.
49Not liking the dress, it hurts my eyes but I could forgive the pattern if it wasn't so short. I think it's wayyyyyyyy too short on her and doesn't flatter her otherwise nice legs. Her hair and make-up look impeccable as usual.
