NBC has decided not to air the segment in Madonna's November 22nd concert special that depicts her on a mirrored Crucifix. There is speculation that NBC is bending to the whim of religious groups who threatened to boycott the network if the segment aired. The network, however, refuses to say why they aren't airing the spot. Here's more:

NBC didn't explain its decision, with a spokeswoman saying the network doesn't discuss how its editorial decisions are made. NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly ducked out of an industry function in Los Angeles Thursday before reporters could reach him.
"NBC did the right thing, but the fact that it did not say why the offensive part of Madonna's concert was cut shows cowardice," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League.
It's been a tough week for NBC. Hundreds of lay offs and now disappointed Madonna fans. It seems to me that they should change their mascot from a peacock to a chicken. I can't wait to hear what Madonna has to say about this.

DAY Birger et Mikkelsen

The crucifixion act is much less than when she masturbated in bed wearing a sort of bathing suit from Gaultier.
1I saw this live when I went to her concert and it was intense. But for NBC to get pressured from religious groups...lame. People need to chill out. She's an artist and she's expressing herself, and is fortunate enough to be living in a country where that freedom of expression is protected by the constitution. If people find it offensive..then well..here's a novel idea...DONT WATCH IT.
2I won't be watching this at all. I am a christian and I realize that she is an artist but that to me is over the line. You should never compare yourself to Jesus even if it is all in good fun. I just hope she realized that it is just plain stupid to do someting like that..
3she has a right to speak, just like everyone else. that is the "american" way. isnt it?
4I was all for NBC not airing this. It would be ridiculous to air this when NBC refused to show Danish newspaper cartoons depicting Muhammad in a negative light in the past. It would come across as if they were catering to the feelings of one religious group and ignoring the feelings of another. It's just not right. Just my opinion.
5If Madonna had a segment of her show that mocked African-Americans, homosexuals, or the Muslim religion, there would be a backlash like no other. But, hey, Christians are the favorite target of those who are just oh-so-much more sophisticated than us bumpkins in the midwest. It's so very tolerant and open-minded of them.
6Yes, Seven there would be a backlash. That to me is hypocritical but,who am I to judge and say anything. I just don't get why Madonna did this in the 1st place. I don't listen to her music so I don't know much about her..
7im not going to watch it if its edited. if i say anymore i will probably offend someone.
8Seven--I don't necessarily think she is mocking Christianity. From everything she has said before, I have always gotten the impression that she has a great respect for Jesus.
9Very good point sblbash, at least NBC is being consistent. I believe that at least part of the reason Madonna is doing this is to elicit what we are doing right now: talking about it - negatively or positively. She is into the "shock" factor...however, I believe that she has the right to her expression. And juju, I agree with you, I doubt she is trying to be disprespectful to Jesus - I dont believe that is the point.
10Also, she was singing "live to tell" while she was on the cross, and if you're familiar with that song - it is about truth and sacrifice..ergo, jesus - virtues that he stood for perhaps? I mean its her interpretation and i'm only speculating here. But its easy to take an image out of context and make assumptions..maybe it would be wise to remember that she might have been very much trying to pay omage to jesus or the symbolism of the crucification in terms of the words of her song.
11hahaha~ I was one of them that signed that petition. Do I care if y'all don't agree., nope*
12I'm a christian too...but i don't wanna judge her,i don't know anything about her,and i don't know why she did this.So there is not much i can say.Does anyone know what she sings while she doing this?I'd like to know the point of all this.
13im christian too and i agree with seven, the muslims went crazy about them cartoon pics that denmark printed and madonna knowing all this havoc that this caused went ahead and did this crusifixion. Is it because christians dont make such a fuss that she decided to go ahead anyways? I think its absurd and good for NBC not airing this
14they have been trying to censor Madonna for 20 years now....it did not work then so it will not work now
15It's ridiculous. In the XXI centure the church still controls the world, specially the media. It's so funny to know that in a country that people claim for democracy, the media is a puppy of the church. hahaha.
16This old hag would do anything for attention, even if it means mocking someone's religion.
17i'm a christian (i even teach sunday school) but i would have really liked to see this performance. so lame, NBC, this isn't even half as offensive as her previous work. mocking the crucifixtion is old news, get over it and don't watch it if it offends you so darn much.
18My question would be why put yourself on the cross? There are other ways of showing respect and omage. She's trying to get attention and it's rude and disrespectful.
19I agree jaxon.
20Madonna. So cutting edge. So relevant.
Oh wait, nevermind, I forgot it's not 1992 anymore. Yawn.
21I just want to point out that our government has not censored Madge. Old fashioned economics censored Madge. NBC wants to keep making a profit and so they made a business decision to keep the majority of their fans happy.
22I think the mock crucifixion is every bit as offensive as masturbating on stage. It's just offensive in a different way. Politics, social status, finances...those things seem external to a person, but religion is more internal I think. Maybe that's why people (myself included) take it so personally when it is made fun of or mocked. Just my opinion.
23She is a nut.
24I saw this in concert and IMO it's not that serious (and I am Catholic) but I can see how NBC would want to cover their asses
25i dont get offended by other people and what they do-- why take it personally that Madonna is crucifying herself?? Thats her own perogative, imo...would i do it? No, because of my christian beliefs... but can she do it? why the f*ck not?
26she only does it to offend and to get your attention. if people would just ignore this crap...she'd stop doing it. it doesn't affect my spirituality any. hell she can reenact the stations of the cross in negligee for all i give a sh*t...
27hahaha, i guess the F word thrown in there didnt bode well for my christian beliefs!
whooops... sorry
28siuxsie- with our swearing, no one is gonna buy that we are actually christians! hahhaha maybe pirates, but not christians.
29maybe we're christian pirates ...arrr. im gonna make ye walk the plank if ye don't give me bank my crucifix peg leg arrr
30f*ck off peg leg!
31LMAO Lauren!
32hehe
33What it all boils down to in the end is how highly Madonna thinks of herself. Her ego is larger than that asteroid they say is going to hit us in 2035. I'm a Christian too, but I'm no religious zealot and frankly couldn't care less what she does during her concerts. Does it offend me? No, because my own faith is what's important. Like Charlize Theron says in "Monster", "I'm good with the Lord."
Madonna can strap herself to a king-size bed and have people in the audience punt her with rubber dildos for all I care.
34Maybe people need to see it for themselves before they rush to judgement:

35At least Madonna didn't get struck like lightning like Jim Caviezel when he played Christ in the Passion of the Christ. He actually got struck by lightning twice filming (go figure, what are the chances? someone obviously doesn't like him upstairs). So tell me which is better - a movie that reenacts how jesus died - or a song that reenacts his ministry?
