Wednesday night was a sad night on The Biggest Loser. The Red Team kicked off Ken, the amazing shrinking man, who had lost a total of 68 pounds in six weeks. Talk about motivation.
Aside from kicking my favorite teammate off, another twist was that the Blue Team was forced to face an interesting challenge: eating out ONLY, for 72 hours. Eating out is yummy and fun, but if you are trying to eat right, it could be detrimental to your regime. So keep in mind a few Fit tips to eat out right:
- If at a restaurant, ask the server to not bring the bread and butter. A good rule of thumb is you won't miss what you can't see.
- Learn this term: Clean. It means no oil, no fat and no surprises. Use it when ordering poultry and fish.
- If there is an option between two portion sizes, opt for the smaller one. Restaurants tend to oversize portions dramatically.

- Always customize. I know it may seem tedious and annoying but without it, you almost definitely will not get a healthy meal.
- If you don't get what you ordered, send it back. Period. If you ordered chicken and it came to you un-cooked, you'd send it back because you didn't order raw chicken. Same theory can apply to anything you order.
- When in doubt, go the salad route. Most salads will be a good healthy bet especially with dressing and cheeses on the side.
A COBB SALAD at The Cheesecake Factory: Chicken Breast, Avocado, Blue Cheese, Bacon, Tomato, Egg and Lettuce Tossed in their House Vinaigrette.
You [to waiter]: "So, I'll have the lunch portion Cobb Salad with the chicken clean and no bacon, but could I have tomatoes on it as well, please? Also I would like the blue cheese and dressing on the side.
Waiter: "Ok, thank you. I'll go ahead and get that in and in the mean time I'll bring you some bread."
You: "You know what? No bread for me today, but thank you."
You get the idea.

Good tips! I eat out so rarely that I go all out. LOL But, people who eat out often are taking in so many more calories than they realize. Restaurants cook things in so much more butter, fat and oil than we usually do at home.
1as a former waitress, i can say that the nice approach works best when doing this (remember to say please and thank you!). i was always happy to accomodate people with things like that but when it became crazy (i.e. trying to change the entire dish) that's when i got annoyed and thought "why don't you just order a piece of lettuce???"
also, a server won't always tell you their brining your bread so just let them know when ordering drinks that you don't want it. trust me, they won't mind as it saves a good chunk of time!
2bad grammar on my part..."tell you they're bringing"
3I agree... iworked at an ice cream shop and these skinny girls always came in and were like "YAH i want the fat-free brownies, fat free chocolate syrup and fat free yogurt..." i always gave them the full fat sh*t. hahaha I was evil back then...
4when i worked at olive garden i made up stuff... like what is was cooked in and stuff.. hahaha also-- if osmeone said, i want my chicken clean, i would be like, uhhhh ok- and drop on the ground to dirty it up on purpose! hahaha totally kidding... good thing i dont wait tables anymore!
5i eat out practically every night... i work crazy hours, so no time to cook... these are really great tips.. NICACHICA - was a waitress for a long time too, so know exactly what you mean!
6lauren - that's gross! i hope you're joking
7also - if you're making all these changes and the waiter is really nice about it: TIP WELL
8yeah i was kidding- i never did anything bad to anyone's food!!
(except for the
skinny-ass girls who really SHOLD have been eating the full fat brownies!) jeebus, dont get ice cream if its gonna be all non-fat!
9i'm excited for fit sugar. i'm kind of a health nut and it'll be fun to read.
10and i am sorry, but when i go to fancier restaurants I always let them dress my salad- usually the nicer places dress it lightly and more evenly then i could do
11I have been cutting back on portions..and I have said this before.. No matter what I order I ask for a To Go box as soon as my meal arrives, cut everything in half and put it in the box. Then I have lunch for the next day.
Also on some morning show they claimed that most restaurants get fairly lean cuts of meat.. so sometimes a steak with steamed or grilled veggies on the side can be healthier than say BBQ chicken. Esp half a steak.
I also substitute salsa for salad dressing if they don't
have any fat free dressing that sound good.
It has worked well for me, but everyone is different.
12lol, that's really not nice lauren. glad you don't do that anymore.
13i've found that just eating at home is the easiest way to eat healthy. cooking doesn't even have to take a long time, 15 to 20 min max. plus, i think food tastes way better if you made it yourself.
14Ima, I hear a lot of people subbing in salsa for other dressings. Sounds good, glad its working out for you!
15blue- I know its mean... i am skinny though and was like, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU IDIOTS?! They literally came in every day and were like anorexically skinny looking... it was kinda sad actually... and i only switched their stuff once!
they liked it though, i even asked
them...
16this is gonna sound weird but i LOVE BBQ sauce as salad dressing too
17What I do to cut down on calories when I go out to dinner is quite simple, but a lot of people don't want to do it: I don't order alcohol. I just drink water or unsweetened iced tea.
18Haha, Whip. I guess it depends who you go to dinner with. If you went with the 'in-laws,' you might need a stiff drink!
19Egads. Eating healthy is so hard to do when you have a menu in front of you FULL of deliciously bad choices. I only eat out when I am NOT trying to watch what every calorie I eat.
20When I was growing up, going out for supper was a big deal, we actually used to *gasp!* get dressed up as a proud family for a dinner at our local restaurant. A meal out was a treat in my household. And believe me, I am not THAT old
Obviously lifestyles nowadays have evolved and all but eliminated the time to prepare a home cooked meal, so eating out has become a convenience to many. I know lots of families that eat out multiple times a week....my question is, how can you teach your child to eat healthy when you don't even know how and where your food is being prepared?
i drink wine... its so worth the calories and i say its good for the heart
21True. And, that's only when I'm dieting, which I only do a few times a year.
It also helps out with the size of the bill. Considerably.
22Fit Sugar is an awesome idea!! I can't wait. Great tips as well, and yup Salsa goes on almost anything I eat these days. It will be nice to have a forum for us to swap tips and recipes as well as some moral support!!
23whip - i live in nyc and not ordering drinks REALLY helps out with the bill! one drink will run you at least $10!
24I would love it if Richard Simmons was FitSugar
25Now Richard Simmons would be some fun times. I love his energy, it's hilariously contagious! I think that's a great idea BlondeSugar, I second that
26Haha Pinksugar! I love your avatar! Such cute yorkies!
27That's what I do all the time! I still enjoy what I eat and fit in a size 2.
28Those are my lil' furbabies, Daisy and Moe. I kind of created them- LOL I also have their ma and pa, Louie and Lola. Yep, I have WAY too many Yorkies!!
29They're adorable! I have two myself, Sam and Lola! I understand when you say you created them! haha They are my children and I love them more most of my family members!
30great advice! sure wish my husband would say 'no' to the bread at Tony's pizza or Carrabba's!!! I never eat the bread anywhere, I learned a looooooooooong time ago that even if you have 2 pieces then it's impossible to eat more than 3 bites of your actual dinner!!! I don't know why restaurants won't serve simple fruit pieces instead of bread.......ha FAT chance!
31pink sugar... i want a yorkie so bad and my bf won't let me get one!!!
32Liza, dump him. Yorkies are so much better
33I actually don't like drinking alcohol WITH my food, unless it's wine. All other alcohol kind of makes me nauseous with food.
34Hey Gang- great ideas! Salsa is a great substitute for dressing and if you are opting for the BBQ sauce (which I also love), watch out for sugar and calories.
FitSugar will cover topics from this to how to get your kids to eat healthy.
All your tips are great and until FIT launches, you can always message me with comments and questions.
35Yay! I'm so pumped for this fitsugar. Thanks for the tips!
36I looooove salsa. Never thought about putting it on salad, though. Thanks for the tip!
37pink sugar, you eat yorkies for halloween?????
38or people could just do away with all the modifications and eat at home and prepare their food the way they want it. if having to meet someone at a restaurant, eat your healthy meal beforehand and order a drink or dessert while you sit with your friend. i think the whole point is eating in moderation and exercising.
