Nicole Richie and Joel Madden spent a few hours away from adorable Sparrow and Harlow yesterday to help out some other deserving kids at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Beyond Shelter organization in LA. The couple is deeply involved in children's charities, especially their own Richie-Madden Foundation. After the event, Nicole tweeted an appreciative note to the volunteers saying, "It felt great to be back. The playground has happened thanx to all of you who helped!" Even with Nicole's busy schedule, including her latest exciting announcement about a new clothing line, Winter Kate, she still makes time to support important causes and show off her big heart.

you have to love that they are so involved in charities and things like that. they don't just lend their names to things, they are really active
Hey Paris take note this is how you get good PR
I'm happy for Nicole's new life!
AWW I just love her! im so glad she turned her life around. keep up the good work girl!
He's cute without his fedora.
I don't buy her kindness. I think Nicole needs more than digging playgrounds to be a better person. By the way, being a mother doesn't make people better. Ask Octomom and Kate Josselin.
Those kids look super happy and excited! Charitable work is a wonderful thing...go Nicole & Joel!
I love genuine charity work, not photo ops and cheeseballing (made that one up myself)...I believe these two really care about thekids.... and I agree with anon about kids not making people "better"...I know a chick with 3 kids she'd sell for $5 each if she could b/c her weekends aren't hers anymore, still selfish as always...but I like Nicole
there is a saying fake it until you make it. even if her charitable work is fake. it is still helping these kids. so who cares.
Best Turnaround: Nicole Richie
